Chapter 8: The Secret My Husband Left Behind

I didn’t sleep that night.

Not because I was afraid.

Because I was angry.

There was a difference.

Fear makes you run.

Anger makes you remember.

I sat in my husband’s study until sunrise.

The room smelled like old books and cedar wood.

Everything in there reminded me of him.

The chair where he read every morning.

The desk where he paid bills.

The small wooden frame holding our wedding photo.

For thirty-eight years, this room had been our safe place.

Now it had become the place where my family had searched for a way to destroy me.

At 7:00 a.m., Margaret arrived.

She carried two coffees and a serious expression.

“You look like you haven’t slept.””

“I haven’t.””

She handed me a cup.

“Did Harrison tell you anything?””

I nodded.

“He said Sloan knows about a trust.””

Margaret became still.

“A trust created by your husband?””

“Yes.””

“That changes everything.””

“Why?””

She opened her briefcase.

“Because if your husband created something before he died, Sloan may believe she has a claim.””

“But she doesn’t.””

“No.””

Margaret looked at me.

“But desperate people don’t always care about what they’re entitled to.””

I looked around the room.

“Where would he hide something?””

Margaret smiled slightly.

“You knew your husband better than anyone.””

I touched the old bookshelf.

“He loved this room.””

I walked slowly around.

Then I stopped.

My husband always had a habit.

Whenever he wanted to hide something important, he hid it somewhere obvious.

I looked at the old clock on the wall.

The clock he repaired every year.

I removed it carefully.

Behind it was a small wooden panel.

My hands started shaking.

Inside was an envelope.

My name was written on it.

Not printed.

Written.

In his handwriting.

I sat down.

For several seconds, I couldn’t open it.

Because suddenly, all the anger disappeared.

And I was just a wife missing her husband.

Margaret sat quietly beside me.

Finally, I opened it.

The first line broke my heart.

“My love, if you are reading this, it means something happened before I was able to explain.””

I covered my mouth.

He knew.

Somehow, he knew.

The letter continued.

“I created a family trust because I wanted to protect you. The house and the land belong to you, but there is another account connected to this property.””

I looked at Margaret.

“Another account?””

She leaned closer.

I continued reading.

“The account was created for our future grandchildren. It contains investments that have grown over the years.””

My eyes moved faster.

Then I saw the amount.

I stopped.

Margaret noticed.

“What is it?””

I looked up.

“The account.””

“How much?””

I swallowed.

“Over two hundred thousand dollars.””

Silence filled the room.

Suddenly everything made sense.

The house.

The documents.

The guardianship.

The money they stole.

They weren’t just trying to take my home.

They were trying to reach the trust.

A noise came from the hallway.

We both looked up.

Someone was inside.

Margaret stood.

“Did you lock the door?””

“Yes.””

Footsteps moved closer.

Slow.

Careful.

Then a voice called out.

“Mom?””

Harrison.

I walked into the hallway.

He stood there holding something.

A folder.

His face looked exhausted.

“I need to tell you the truth.””

I stared at him.

“What truth?””

He looked down.

Then handed me the folder.

“I found this in Sloan’s car.””

My fingers tightened around it.

“What is it?””

He looked at me with tears in his eyes.

“The plan she wrote.””

I opened the folder.

The first page had a title.

May you like

A title that made my entire body go cold.

“Step One: Prove Eleanor Carter Is Mentally Unstable.””
