Chapter 13: The Truth My Husband Hid

For several seconds after the call ended, nobody moved.

The silence inside my living room felt heavier than anything I had experienced before.

Not because of Sloan.

Not because of the missing safe.

Because of one sentence.

“You should ask Harrison who his father was really working with.””

I looked at my son.

For the first time in my life, I saw fear on his face.

Not guilt.

Not shame.

Fear.

“Harrison,” I said quietly.

He looked down.

That was all the answer I needed.

“You know something.””

He didn’t respond.

“Harrison.””

His shoulders dropped.

“I know some of it.””

My chest tightened.

“Some of it?””

He walked into the house slowly and sat down.

“I didn’t want you to know this way.””

I almost laughed.

“Do you know how many times I’ve heard that sentence from you?””

He covered his face with his hands.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“No.””

My voice became sharper.

“You were trying to protect yourself.””

He looked at me.

And this time, he didn’t argue.

Because he knew I was right.

“Tell me everything.””

He stayed quiet for a moment.

Then he began.

“Before Dad died, he started investigating someone.””

“Who?””

Harrison swallowed.

“A business partner.””

I frowned.

“Your father had dozens of business relationships.””

“This one was different.””

He looked toward the letter on the table.

“Dad believed someone close to him was trying to gain access to the trust.””

I sat down slowly.

“Who?””

Harrison looked away.

“Sloan’s father.””

The room went silent.

I stared at him.

“Sloan’s father?””

“Yes.””

I remembered meeting him years earlier.

A charming man.

Always smiling.

Always complimenting my husband.

I had never suspected anything.

“What did your father find?””

Harrison rubbed his hands together.

“He found evidence that Sloan’s father had been moving money through fake companies.””

My heart sank.

“And Sloan knew?””

“I don’t know.””

“But she knew enough.””

He nodded.

“That’s why she married me.””

The words hung in the air.

I looked at my son.

“What did you say?””

His eyes filled with tears.

“I think she chose me because of Dad’s trust.””

Pain moved through my chest.

Not because Sloan had betrayed me.

I already knew that.

Because Harrison had spent years living with that suspicion.

And still stayed silent.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I loved her.””

The answer was honest.

And somehow, that hurt more.

“I thought she would change.””

I shook my head.

“People don’t change because we love them enough.””

Harrison looked broken.

“I know.””

For a while, nobody spoke.

Then Margaret called.

I answered.

“Eleanor, I found something.””

“What?””

“I checked the property records connected to the trust.””

“And?””

“There was another name attached.””

My heart started racing.

“Whose?””

A pause.

Then:

“Sloan.””

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

She wasn’t just after my house.

She had been connected to this from the beginning.

“How?””

“I don’t know yet. But there’s something else.””

“What?””

“Your husband added a condition to the trust.””

I stood.

“What condition?””

Margaret lowered her voice.

“If anyone attempts to take control of your assets through fraud, the trust activates a protection clause.””

I looked at Harrison.

“What does that mean?””

“It means Sloan may have accidentally triggered something.””

“What?””

“The trust may no longer be protecting her.””

A strange feeling moved through me.

For the first time in weeks, I felt something I thought I had lost.

Hope.

But then Margaret said:

“There’s a problem.””

“What?””

“The documents needed to activate the clause are inside the safe Sloan took.””

I closed my eyes.

Everything came back to that safe.

That hidden box.

That final secret.

“She has everything.””

“No,” Margaret said.

“She has the safe.””

I looked at the letter.

“What’s the difference?””

Margaret answered:

“She doesn’t have the key.””

I froze.

“The key?””

“Yes.””

“Where is it?””

A pause.

Then Margaret said:

“Your husband left a note.””

My heart stopped.

“What note?””

“The note says the key was never hidden.””

I looked around the room.

My husband’s words suddenly felt alive.

The answer had been in front of me all along.

Then Margaret finished:

“It says only one person would know where to find it.””

I whispered:

“Who?””

May you like

Her answer made my blood run cold.

“You.””
