Chapter 5: The Son I Raised

I ran toward my office.

Margaret followed behind me.

The door was open.

My heart pounded as I stepped inside.

Nothing looked different at first.

The papers were still on the desk.

The shelves looked untouched.

But then I saw it.

The bottom drawer.

Open.

The drawer where I kept my original property documents.

Harrison stood beside the desk.

His hand was still inside the drawer.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then he slowly turned around.

“Mom.””

I stared at him.

“What are you doing?””

His face changed from surprise to anger.

“What are you doing with an attorney here?””

I couldn’t believe it.

He wasn’t apologizing.

He was attacking.

“This is my office.””

He stepped back.

“I was looking for something.””

“What?””

He didn’t answer.

Margaret stepped forward.

“Mr. Carter, you were inside a locked room searching through private documents.””

Harrison looked at her.

“This is a family matter.””

“No,” I said quietly.

He looked at me.

“This stopped being just a family matter when you started taking my money.””

His jaw tightened.

“I didn’t take anything.””

“Then why were you in my office?””

Silence.

The kind of silence that confirms everything.

Harrison looked away.

I felt something break inside me.

Not anger.

Not even betrayal.

Grief.

Because the hardest part wasn’t losing money.

It was realizing my own child had become someone I needed to protect myself from.

That evening, Sloan came downstairs wearing a designer dress.

She looked at Margaret sitting at the table.

“What is this?””

I looked at her.

“A conversation.””

She smiled.

“No. This is an ambush.””

I stared at her.

“An ambush?””

“Yes. You’re making us look like criminals.””

I slowly stood.

“You tried to have me declared incapable of handling my own life.””

Her smile disappeared.

For the first time, she looked nervous.

“I have no idea what you’re talking about.””

“Then why were you at a lawyer’s office discussing my house?””

Sloan went silent.

Harrison stepped in.

“Mom, enough.””

I looked at him.

“No.””

My voice surprised even me.

“No more.””

I walked to the table and placed the bank statements down.

“No more excuses.””

Then I placed the photograph from Rebecca beside them.

Sloan’s face turned pale.

Harrison reached for it.

“Where did you get this?””

I watched him.

That question told me everything.

Not “What is this?””

Not “This isn’t real.””

Just:

Where did you get this?

“You knew,” I whispered.

Harrison looked away.

Sloan immediately grabbed his arm.

“Don’t say anything.””

I heard it.

A small sentence.

A nervous warning.

And it told me they were hiding more.

Much more.

I picked up my phone.

“I want both of you out of my house.””

Harrison stared at me.

“You’re kicking us out?””

“Yes.””

He laughed bitterly.

“You can’t do that.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

He hesitated.

Then Sloan answered.

“Because we have rights.””

Margaret looked up.

“Actually, they don’t have ownership rights.””

Sloan’s face changed.

“But we live here.””

“Yes,” Margaret said.

“Temporarily.””

The word hit Sloan harder than I expected.

Because that was the truth they hated.

They weren’t owners.

They were guests.

Guests who had overstayed.

Harrison stepped closer.

“Mom, don’t do something you’ll regret.””

I looked at him.

“I already did.””

His eyes narrowed.

“What?””

“I trusted you.””

Nobody spoke.

The next morning, I hired movers.

Not because I wanted revenge.

Because I wanted my life back.

While they packed their belongings, I stayed in the kitchen with Margaret.

Then she received an email.

Her expression changed.

“What?””

She turned her laptop toward me.

My blood ran cold.

It was a message from the same lawyer in the photograph.

Attached was a new document.

A court filing.

Margaret opened it.

And I saw the title.

“Emergency Petition for Guardianship.””

My name was written underneath.

But there was something else.

May you like

The person requesting control over my life was not Harrison.

It was someone I never expected.
