Chapter 14: What Burned

"No!""

Eleanor fired.

The gunshot exploded through the underground room.

Hayes tackled her.

Corinne screamed and fell.

Julian covered Wren with his body.

Officers rushed downstairs.

"Weapon!""

"Hands!""

"Don't move!""

Within seconds, Eleanor was pinned against the floor.

Adrian stood beside the furnace.

Blood appeared on his shoulder.

Julian stared.

"You've been shot.""

Adrian looked down.

"Apparently.""

Hayes kicked the pistol away.

Paramedics were called.

Eleanor twisted beneath the officers.

"You idiot!""

She screamed at Adrian.

"Do you know what you've destroyed?""

Adrian looked at the furnace.

"Nothing.""

Eleanor stopped.

Adrian smiled.

"The bracelet I threw in was fake.""

Wren peeked around Julian.

Then she reached inside her sock.

A tiny silver bracelet appeared.

Julian stared at her.

"Wren.""

She gave him an apologetic look.

"Grandpa Thomas said never let anybody take it.""

Even Hayes looked stunned.

Adrian laughed despite his wound.

"Smart kid.""

Eleanor's face twisted with rage.

"You planned this?""

Adrian shook his head.

"She did.""

Julian looked at his daughter.

Ten years old.

Exhausted.

Drugged.

Forced to scrub floors.

Manipulated by adults who had spent decades hiding secrets.

And somehow she had protected the one thing all of them had failed to protect.

Truth.

Paramedics treated Adrian while Hayes took Eleanor upstairs in handcuffs.

Corinne remained seated against the wall.

Julian looked at her.

"I'm sorry," she whispered.

He said nothing.

"I'm not asking you to forgive me.""

"Good.""

Corinne flinched.

"I'll tell police everything.""

"You should.""

"I'll testify.""

"You should have protected Wren before any of this happened.""

Corinne lowered her head.

"I know.""

Julian took Wren's hand.

They left her there.

The bracelet opened with a tiny hinge.

Inside was not a conventional key.

It contained a narrow metal strip stamped with numbers.

Richard recognized them immediately.

"Private storage vault.""

"Where?""

"Union Continental Bank.""

Julian frowned.

"My family never used that bank.""

"Exactly.""

Two hours later, Julian, Wren, Hayes, David and Richard entered a private vault room downtown.

Adrian was in surgery under police guard.

Eleanor and Corinne were both in custody.

Richard entered the code.

The bank manager brought a metal box.

Julian placed the strip into its lock.

Click.

Inside was one videotape.

One letter.

And a stack of original birth records.

Julian picked up the tape.

"Thomas's recording.""

Richard nodded.

They found equipment capable of playing it.

Thomas Ashcroft appeared on-screen.

Older.

Sick.

Julian had forgotten how much he missed him.

"If you're watching this," Thomas began, "then Eleanor has returned, or I failed to stop her.""

Wren squeezed Julian's hand.

Thomas continued.

"Julian, there is something I should have told you while I was alive.""

Julian swallowed.

"You were not born an Ashcroft.""

He already knew.

Yet hearing Thomas say it hurt differently.

"You were born Julian Vale, son of Margaret Vale.""

Richard wiped his eyes.

"Adrian was born Adrian Crane, son of Catherine Crane.""

Thomas looked directly into the camera.

"I loved you both as my sons.""

Julian's throat tightened.

"I told myself that love justified keeping you. It did not.""

Thomas took a breath.

"Eleanor falsified the documents. But I benefited from those lies. I had power.

Money. Lawyers. I could have exposed her sooner.""

He looked down.

"I was a coward.""

Julian stared at the screen.

Wren leaned against him.

Thomas continued.

"Margaret fought for Julian. Catherine fought for Adrian. Eleanor threatened both women.""

Then the confession recording began.

Eleanor appeared.

Younger.

Furious.

Thomas's voice came from off-camera.

"You changed the birth records.""

"I protected this family.""

"You stole children.""

"I created heirs.""

Julian felt Wren squeeze his hand harder.

Thomas asked:

"And Margaret?""

Eleanor smiled coldly.

"She should have accepted the money.""

"What did you do?""

"I made sure she stopped asking questions.""

Richard began crying silently.

Thomas's voice shook.

"You killed her.""

Eleanor didn't answer directly.

She didn't need to.

The recording continued.

Blackwood.

Forged guardianship.

Payments.

The staged deaths.

Every piece.

Enough to reopen decades of investigations.

Enough to destroy Eleanor's manufactured history.

When the screen finally went black, nobody spoke.

Then Wren asked:

"Daddy?""

"Yes?""

"Are we still Ashcrofts?""

Julian looked at her.

He thought about blood.

Names.

Inheritance.

Lies.

Then he crouched.

"You are Wren.""

She frowned.

"That's not what I asked.""

Despite everything, Julian smiled.

"No. I suppose it wasn't.""

He took her hands.

"A name is something people give you. Family is what people do with the responsibility of loving you.""

Wren considered that.

"So Grandpa Thomas was family?""

"Yes.""

"Even though he made mistakes?""

Julian looked at the blank screen.

"Yes.""

"And Corinne?""

His smile disappeared.

"No.""

Wren nodded.

She understood.

Julian's phone rang.

Hayes answered her own at the same moment.

Her expression changed.

"What?""

Julian looked at her.

Hayes listened.

Then slowly lowered the phone.

"Adrian is out of surgery.""

Julian exhaled.

"He's alive?""

"Yes.""

"But?""

Hayes looked toward Wren.

Then at Julian.

"Before they sedated him, he confessed to taking Wren.""

Julian nodded.

"He should.""

"That's not all he confessed to.""

"What else?""

Hayes' voice lowered.

"He says Eleanor didn't order the plan against you.""

Julian frowned.

"Then who did?""

May you like

Hayes stared at him.

"Corinne.""
