Chapter 12: The Man Behind the Wall

Caleb stared at Richard.

"Dad?""

The word came out before he could stop it.

Richard Vale looked exhausted.

His beard was gray.

His coat was torn.

But he was alive.

Caleb crossed the room in three steps and grabbed him.

"Where have you been?""

Richard held him tightly.

"I'm sorry.""

"You disappeared.""

"I had to.""

"You always say that!""

Caleb shoved him away.

"You told me Adrian was my father.""

Richard's face changed.

Caleb pointed at the monitor.

"We saw the tape.""

Richard closed his eyes.

"I'm your father.""

Caleb laughed once.

Broken.

"Twenty-one years.""

"I was trying to keep you alive.""

"By lying?""

"Yes.""

Caleb stared at him.

Richard didn't look away.

"Sometimes the truth was more dangerous.""

Julian stepped forward.

"That excuse has destroyed enough people.""

Richard looked at him.

For a moment, his expression softened.

"You look like Margaret.""

Julian's throat tightened.

"You knew my mother.""

"She was my sister.""

"Why did you let Eleanor take me?""

"I didn't.""

Richard's voice cracked.

"I fought her for years.""

"Not hard enough.""

Richard accepted the blow without defending himself.

"No.""

Julian wanted to hate him.

But he needed answers more.

"Why are you here?""

"Because Eleanor returned.""

"You knew?""

"I've known for twelve years.""

Julian laughed bitterly.

"Of course.""

Hayes stepped forward.

"Mr. Vale, you're coming with us.""

"I will.""

"After you explain the hidden room.""

Richard looked around.

"This room belonged to Thomas.""

"My father?""

"The man who raised you.""

Julian flinched at the distinction.

Richard continued.

"Thomas discovered what Eleanor had done too late. He spent years collecting evidence.""

"Why hide it?""

"Because Eleanor had people everywhere.""

"Blackwood?""

Richard nodded.

"Doctors. Lawyers. Trustees.""

Corinne stood silently in the corner.

Richard saw her.

His expression hardened.

"You.""

Corinne looked down.

"You helped Adrian.""

"I didn't know everything.""

"You knew enough.""

Julian stepped between them.

"Where is Adrian?""

Richard looked at him.

"I don't know.""

"Where is Eleanor?""

"Probably looking for the one thing Thomas hid from her.""

"Wren's DNA.""

Richard shook his head.

"No.""

Everyone went silent.

Julian frowned.

"Then what?""

"Wren's sample is evidence, but not the only evidence.""

"What does she want?""

Richard walked toward Thomas's desk.

He opened a concealed compartment.

Empty.

His face fell.

"No.""

"What?""

"It's gone.""

"What was there?""

Richard looked terrified.

"A recording.""

"Of what?""

"Eleanor confessing.""

Julian stared at him.

"To stealing me?""

"To much more.""

Richard gripped the desk.

"Margaret didn't die naturally.""

Julian's body went cold.

"What?""

"She was going to expose Eleanor.""

"How did she die?""

"Officially? A car accident.""

Julian already knew the answer before Richard spoke.

"Eleanor arranged it.""

Julian looked away.

His biological mother had fought to recover him.

Then she had died.

And he had grown up calling the woman responsible "Mom.""

Richard continued.

"Catherine Crane discovered the truth too.""

"Adrian's mother.""

"Yes.""

"What happened to her?""

"Same pattern.""

Caleb whispered, "Another accident.""

Richard nodded.

"Eleanor eliminated anyone who could challenge the family story.""

Hayes wrote quickly.

"And Thomas?""

Richard hesitated.

Julian turned.

"My father.""

"We don't know.""

"Don't lie.""

"I'm not.""

Richard's voice softened.

"Thomas became ill shortly after recording Eleanor's confession.""

Julian remembered the sedative in his tea.

"The same way I became ill.""

Richard nodded.

"That's why I came back.""

"Where were you for three days?""

"Following Eleanor.""

"Why not call police?""

"I tried twenty-four years ago.""

"And?""

"She had documentation showing Margaret sold you.""

Julian's jaw tightened.

"Did she?""

"No. But forged documents look real until someone proves otherwise.""

Richard looked at Wren's files.

"That's why Thomas preserved the blood evidence.""

Caleb stepped forward.

"And why did you lie to me?""

Richard looked at him.

"Because Adrian became obsessed with you.""

"Why?""

"He believed you were his biological son. Eleanor encouraged it.""

"Why would she do that?""

"To control him.""

Richard's eyes filled with regret.

"She convinced Adrian that Thomas had stolen his child, just as she claimed Thomas had stolen his inheritance.""

Julian understood.

"She turned him against everyone.""

"For decades.""

Hayes' phone buzzed.

She read the message.

"We found Adrian.""

Julian spun toward her.

"Where?""

"Security camera caught him entering St. Matthew's Medical Center twenty minutes ago.""

Julian's stomach tightened.

"Wren's samples.""

Richard went pale.

"That's not why he's there.""

"Then why?""

Richard grabbed his coat.

"Because Catherine Crane is there.""

Julian stared.

"Adrian's mother is alive?""

"Yes.""

"Why?""

"Protective identity. Thomas arranged it.""

Another dead person alive.

Julian almost laughed at the insanity.

They raced to the hospital.

Police met them outside.

"Catherine Crane is registered under Catherine Morris," Hayes said.

"Long-term neurological care. Private floor.""

They entered.

The elevator seemed impossibly slow.

When the doors opened, a nurse was screaming.

"He's in Room 814!""

Julian ran.

The door stood open.

Adrian was beside the bed.

An elderly woman lay beneath white blankets.

Catherine.

Adrian held her hand.

"Tell me!""

She cried.

"I'm sorry.""

"Tell me who Caleb's father is!""

"Richard.""

Adrian recoiled.

"No.""

Catherine sobbed.

"Eleanor paid me to tell you he was yours.""

"You let me believe it for twenty-one years.""

"I was afraid.""

"You destroyed my life!""

Julian entered.

"Adrian.""

His brother—no, the boy raised as his brother—turned.

For the first time in nineteen years, they stood face-to-face.

Adrian looked older.

Harder.

But unmistakable.

"You.""

Julian stopped several feet away.

"Where's Eleanor?""

Adrian laughed bitterly.

"You still think I'm working with her?""

"You kidnapped my daughter.""

"And returned her unharmed.""

"You terrified her.""

Adrian's face tightened.

"I know.""

"That doesn't erase it.""

"No.""

For once, Adrian didn't argue.

Hayes entered behind Julian.

"Adrian Ashcroft, put your hands where I can see them.""

Adrian slowly raised them.

Then Catherine whispered:

"She's going to Wren.""

Julian turned.

"What?""

Catherine struggled to sit up.

"Eleanor knows.""

"Knows what?""

"The blood sample was moved.""

Richard entered.

"Where?""

Catherine looked at him.

"Thomas ordered a second sample stored somewhere Eleanor could never access.""

Julian's heart pounded.

"Where?""

Catherine whispered one word.

"School.""

Julian went cold.

Wren's school.

His phone rang.

Principal Bennett.

He answered.

"Mr. Ashcroft?""

Her voice was shaking.

"Someone claiming to be Wren's grandmother just arrived.""

Julian couldn't breathe.

Principal Bennett continued:

"She has court papers authorizing her to take Wren.""

Julian looked around the hospital room.

"Wren isn't at school.""

Silence.

Then Principal Bennett whispered:

"Mr. Ashcroft...""

A child's scream sounded faintly through the phone.

Julian's blood froze.

May you like

Principal Bennett gasped.

"Then who is the little girl sitting in Wren's classroom?""
