Chapter 10: The Blood They Hid
Julian stared at the medical file in Caleb's hands.
"It's her DNA.""
The words seemed impossible.
"Wren wasn't alive twenty-four years ago.""
"No," Caleb said.
"But DNA doesn't need to witness a crime.""
Detective Hayes stepped closer.
"What exactly was stored?""
Caleb opened the file.
"Umbilical cord blood. Tissue samples. Routine newborn screening cards.""
Julian took the pages.
Wren had been born at St. Matthew's Medical Center ten years earlier. He remembered holding her minutes after delivery.
He remembered crying.
He remembered Eleanor being dead.
Or believing she was.
"Why would anyone care about Wren's cord blood?""
David picked up the old letter from Julian's father.
"Because it can establish biological relationships.""
Julian looked at him.
"Between Wren and whom?""
Caleb began searching the boxes.
"That's what Richard wanted us to find.""
He pulled out another folder.
Inside was a handwritten family chart.
Names.
Dates.
Lines connecting people Julian had believed were relatives.
Several names had been crossed out.
Adrian.
Julian.
Then Wren.
Beside Wren's name was one handwritten note.
CONFIRMATION SAMPLE.
Julian's stomach tightened.
"Confirmation of what?""
A floorboard creaked upstairs.
Hayes immediately raised a hand.
Everyone went silent.
Another sound.
A door closing.
"Police!"" Hayes shouted.
Footsteps thundered overhead.
Officers ran upstairs.
Caleb backed toward the vault wall.
"She's here.""
"Who?"" Julian asked.
"Eleanor.""
A window shattered.
Hayes rushed out.
Julian started after her.
Caleb grabbed him.
"Wait.""
"My daughter is outside.""
"Wren has officers around her.""
"Then let go.""
Caleb did.
Julian reached the stairs when a gunshot cracked through the house.
He froze.
"Hayes!""
"I'm okay!"" she shouted.
Outside, officers chased a figure across the backyard.
A dark SUV roared from behind a detached garage.
It smashed through a wooden gate and disappeared onto the road.
Hayes returned, furious.
"She had someone waiting.""
Julian looked toward Wren.
She was safe beside an officer.
Only then did he breathe.
Hayes held up something recovered near the broken window.
A phone.
"The suspect dropped this.""
The screen was cracked but still active.
A message remained visible.
GET THE GIRL. BURN THE VAULT.
Julian's face hardened.
Hayes bagged the device.
"We have enough now to treat Eleanor as an active threat.""
Julian looked at Caleb.
"Finish finding the answer.""
They returned downstairs.
Twenty minutes later, Caleb found a sealed laboratory report.
The date was twenty-four years earlier.
Three samples were listed.
Infant A.
Infant B.
Thomas Ashcroft.
Julian recognized his father's name.
David read silently.
Then his expression changed.
"What?""
David handed him the report.
Thomas Ashcroft was not the biological father of Infant A.
Nor Infant B.
Julian looked at Caleb.
"Neither Adrian nor I was his son.""
"Keep reading," David said.
A fourth name appeared on page two.
Margaret Vale.
Probability of maternity for Infant B: 99.98%.
Julian.
He knew before anyone said it.
"I'm Infant B.""
Caleb nodded.
"Then who's Infant A?""
They turned the page.
Mother:
Catherine Crane.
Julian stared at the surname.
"Crane.""
"Lydia Crane," Hayes said.
Caleb searched another box.
"Maybe that's why Eleanor used the name.""
He found a birth photograph.
A young Thomas Ashcroft stood beside two women.
Margaret Vale held one newborn.
Another woman held the second.
On the back:
Margaret, Catherine, Julian, Adrian.
Julian sat down.
"So Adrian and I weren't brothers.""
David shook his head.
"Not biologically.""
"Why would my father raise both of us?""
Caleb found another letter.
This one was written by Thomas.
Julian read.
Margaret and Catherine discovered what Eleanor had done. By then it was too late.
He stopped.
"What did she do?""
The next page explained.
Thomas had been trying to divorce Eleanor.
The Ashcroft trust required a direct biological descendant for permanent family control.
Eleanor could not have children.
So she created heirs.
Not through adoption.
Through falsified birth registrations.
Two babies from vulnerable women were brought into the Ashcroft household and legally recorded as Eleanor and Thomas's sons.
Julian felt nauseated.
"She stole us.""
David read further.
"Margaret and Catherine originally agreed to temporary private guardianship because Thomas promised financial support.""
"But?""
Caleb's voice was quiet.
"Eleanor changed the records.""
Julian looked at the photograph.
His entire childhood had been built on a crime.
"Why Wren?""
David found the final paragraph.
Thomas had secretly preserved evidence.
DNA from the biological mothers.
Medical records.
Correspondence.
Years later, when Wren was born, he arranged through a trusted physician to preserve her cord blood.
Julian frowned.
"But he was dead before Wren was born.""
David checked the date.
"Instructions in his estate.""
Caleb leaned over.
"Wren's DNA can establish that you're Margaret's biological son.""
"And?""
Hayes understood first.
"Which proves Eleanor's official maternity records were fraudulent.""
Julian looked at her.
"And exposes the original kidnapping.""
"Potentially.""
Caleb suddenly pulled another paper from the folder.
"There's more.""
The Ashcroft trust had a morality and fraud provision.
If controlling succession was obtained through falsified parentage, every transfer based on that fraud could be challenged.
Julian stared.
"Eleanor isn't trying to get the company.""
Caleb nodded.
"She's trying to prevent anyone from proving how she got it in the first place.""
Julian's phone rang.
Dr. Ward.
He answered.
"Julian, I found Caleb's original Blackwood intake archive.""
Caleb moved closer.
"What does it say?""
Julian put the call on speaker.
Dr. Ward continued.
"His admission wasn't ordered by Adrian.""
Caleb's face changed.
"What?""
"The signature was forged.""
"By whom?""
"I can't prove who signed it. But I found the visitor log.""
Julian felt cold.
"Who visited him?""
Dr. Ward hesitated.
"Richard Vale.""
Caleb frowned.
"Richard rescued me.""
"Not according to this.""
"What are you saying?""
"He visited you eleven times before your disappearance.""
Caleb shook his head.
"That doesn't mean anything.""
"The twelfth entry does.""
Silence.
Dr. Ward spoke carefully.
"It says Richard Vale removed you from Blackwood.""
Caleb stared at the phone.
"Yes. He saved me.""
"No.""
May you like
Dr. Ward's voice softened.
"The authorization identifies him as your legal father.""
