Chapter 12: The Night My Grandmother Died

The police took Marcus away.

But nobody celebrated.

Because the biggest question remained unanswered.

Who was with my grandmother the night she died?

My father sat in the living room for almost an hour without speaking.

Vanessa had been taken away for questioning.

Victor stayed.

Dylan and Olivia sat beside me.

Nobody wanted to ask the question.

Because we all knew the answer would hurt.

Finally, I did.

“Dad.””

He looked up.

His eyes were red.

“What happened that night?””

He looked at the floor.

“I went to see your grandmother.””

“Why?””

“Because she called me.””

My heart tightened.

“What did she say?””

He swallowed.

“She said she had proof against Vanessa and Marcus.””

“And?””

“And she wanted me to take it to the police.””

I waited.

“But you didn’t.””

He closed his eyes.

“No.””

The room became silent.

“Why?””

His voice broke.

“Because Vanessa called me before I left.””

I frowned.

“What did she say?””

“She said if I exposed Marcus, she would expose me.””

“Expose what?””

My father looked at me.

“The mistakes I made.””

I waited.

“And you chose Vanessa?””

“No.””

His voice was immediate.

“I chose fear.””

That honesty hurt more.

“What happened when you got to Grandma’s house?””

My father stared at his hands.

“She was alive.””

Everyone went quiet.

“Dad…”

“She was sitting at the kitchen table.””

He looked like he was reliving it.

“She had the documents. The videos. Everything.””

“What happened next?””

“She told me to protect you.””

My eyes filled.

“She told me you were the reason she kept fighting.””

My father wiped his face.

“Then Vanessa arrived.””

The room froze.

“She followed me.””

“Why?””

“Because she knew.””

My father looked toward the window.

“She knew your grandmother had copies.””

“What happened?””

His voice became barely a whisper.

“They argued.””

“About what?””

“Money. The evidence. Everything.””

I held my breath.

“Then?””

“My grandmother collapsed.””

Nobody moved.

“What did Vanessa do?””

My father looked at me.

“She called an ambulance.””

Dylan frowned.

“Then why hide everything?””

My father looked away.

“Because before the ambulance came, Marcus arrived.””

The name alone changed the room.

“What did he do?””

My father shook his head.

“I don’t know.””

“You don’t know?””

“I left.””

Everyone stared.

“You left?””

He looked broken.

“I was scared. I thought if I stayed, they would blame me.””

My voice shook.

“And Grandma?””

He looked at me.

“She died before the ambulance arrived.””

The room was silent.

I wanted to hate him.

Part of me did.

But I also saw the truth.

My father had spent twenty-eight years living with that decision.

Not because he got away.

Because he never escaped it.

Then Victor quietly spoke.

“There’s one thing he doesn’t know.””

Everyone turned.

“What?””

Victor looked at my father.

“Your mother survived that night longer than you think.””

My father went pale.

“What?””

Victor opened his briefcase.

He pulled out a document.

“The hospital records were altered.””

My heart raced.

“What are you saying?””

Victor looked at me.

“Your grandmother was conscious after the ambulance arrived.””

I felt frozen.

“She left one final statement.””

My father stood.

“What did she say?””

Victor placed the paper on the table.

“She named the person responsible.””

Nobody breathed.

My father picked it up.

His hands shook.

He read the first line.

Then his face changed.

“What?””

I stepped closer.

“Who was it?””

My father looked at me.

Tears filled his eyes.

Then he whispered the name.

And it was not Marcus.

It was not Vanessa.

May you like

It was someone none of us had suspected.

Someone who had been in our family the entire time.
