Chapter 10: The Confession Hidden for Twenty-Eight Years

The video stopped.

Not because it ended.

Because nobody in the room could move.

My father’s younger voice echoed in my mind.

“If Vanessa finds out you made a copy of the evidence, she’ll destroy all of us.””

I looked at him.

The man standing beside me now was older.

Tired.

Broken.

But the fear on his face was exactly the same.

“You knew,” I whispered.

My father didn’t answer.

Dylan stepped forward.

“Dad.””

Still nothing.

“Dad, what did you know?””

My father lowered his head.

“I knew Marcus was stealing money.””

The words hit harder than I expected.

Even though I already suspected.

Even though the evidence was sitting in front of us.

Hearing him admit it made it real.

“How long?”” I asked.

He looked at me.

“I found out three weeks before your grandmother died.””

My chest tightened.

“Three weeks?””

He nodded.

“She called me to her house.””

The video played again.

My grandmother’s voice filled the room.

“Richard, you have to understand. This is bigger than money.””

On the screen, my father sat across from her.

Younger.

Angrier.

Scared.

“You’re asking me to destroy my own marriage,” his younger self said.

My grandmother looked at him.

“I’m asking you to protect your children.””

I felt tears forming.

She knew.

She knew everything.

My father paused the video.

“I was afraid.””

Nobody spoke.

“You were afraid?”” Dylan asked.

My father nodded.

“Vanessa knew things about me. Things I was ashamed of.””

Marcus looked away.

“What things?””

My father stared at him.

“You know.””

Marcus’s expression hardened.

“I know you made mistakes.””

My father’s voice cracked.

“I covered for you.””

That sentence shocked everyone.

My father continued.

“I thought if I stayed quiet, I could fix it. I thought I could recover the money and protect my family.””

He looked at me.

“I was wrong.””

I wanted to be angry.

I wanted to yell.

But seeing him admit it made everything more complicated.

Because my father wasn’t innocent.

But he wasn’t the monster I had imagined either.

The video continued.

My grandmother looked directly into the camera.

“If Richard does not tell the truth, Nia must know eventually.””

My breath caught.

She had known.

She had planned for this moment.

Then my grandmother said something that made my entire body freeze.

“Vanessa did not marry Richard because she loved him.””

Vanessa stepped back.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

The video continued.

“She married him because she believed he had access to the Hale family trust.””

My father covered his face.

“I didn’t know.””

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“You think you were the only victim?””

The room turned toward her.

My father stared.

“What?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with anger.

“You all think I’m the villain.””

Dylan shook his head.

“Because you stole from us.””

“No.””

Her voice broke.

“Because you never knew the whole story.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Vanessa.””

She looked at him.

“You’re the reason this happened.””

My stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa looked at me.

For once, she didn’t look powerful.

She looked exhausted.

“I didn’t know Marcus was going to destroy your grandmother.””

Marcus’s face changed.

“Careful.””

“No.””

Vanessa pointed at him.

“You promised me we were only taking the trust money.””

Everyone froze.

My father stared.

“You were working together.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

The confession hung in the air.

Then she said something nobody expected.

“But Marcus lied to me too.””

Marcus laughed.

“You always were good at pretending.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“You killed the only person who could expose us.””

The room went silent.

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

My father stepped forward.

“What did you just say?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Your mother didn’t die naturally.””

The world seemed to tilt.

My grandmother.

Her death.

The hospital.

The funeral.

Everything I remembered suddenly felt different.

“No,” my father whispered.

Vanessa looked at the video.

“Your mother found out everything.””

Marcus’s face went cold.

“Enough.””

But nobody listened.

Because now we needed the truth.

My father walked toward Marcus.

“What did you do?””

Marcus didn’t move.

Then the front door downstairs slammed.

Everyone turned.

A voice called from the hallway.

“Looking for the truth?””

We froze.

A man stepped into view.

A man I had never seen before.

But Marcus immediately recognized him.

May you like

And his expression changed.

Because this person was the one person he seemed afraid of.
