Chapter 11: The Person Behind Everything
The stranger walked slowly into the room.
He wasn’t young.
Maybe in his sixties.
Gray hair.
Expensive suit.
A calm expression that made him more frightening.
Marcus stared at him.
“You shouldn’t be here.””
The man smiled.
“Neither should you.””
My father stepped forward.
“Who are you?””
The man looked around the room.
Then his eyes landed on me.
“Nia Hale.””
I hated how easily strangers knew my name.
“Who are you?””
He extended his hand.
“My name is Victor Cross.””
Nobody moved.
Marcus looked furious.
“You’re the one who sent the messages.””
Victor smiled.
“Yes.””
My father looked confused.
“Why?””
Victor walked toward the table.
“Because your grandmother wanted the truth revealed.””
He placed a folder beside the documents.
“She knew this day would come.””
I stared at him.
“How?””
Victor looked at me.
“Because your grandmother was smarter than all of us.””
He opened the folder.
Inside were copies of emails.
Bank records.
Photographs.
Evidence.
“This is everything Marcus and Vanessa tried to erase.””
My father looked through the pages.
His hands shook.
“Why didn’t you come forward?””
Victor sighed.
“Because your grandmother asked me not to.””
My father looked up.
“Why?””
“Because she believed exposing everything immediately would destroy innocent people.””
I laughed quietly.
“Innocent people?””
I pointed around the room.
“My entire family was destroyed anyway.””
Victor looked at me.
“I know.””
For some reason, that made me angrier.
Everyone knew.
Everyone knew pieces.
Everyone knew secrets.
And I was the last person to find out.
My grandmother’s favorite saying suddenly came back to me.
The truth always finds its way home.
I wondered if she realized how painful that journey would be.
Dylan picked up one document.
“This account…”
His eyes widened.
“What?””
Victor looked at him.
“Read the name.””
Dylan did.
Then he looked at me.
“Nia.””
I took the paper.
It was an account agreement.
My name was listed as the beneficiary.
The amount?
$120,000.
My inheritance.
But there was something else.
A second account.
My father’s name.
And another amount.
$300,000.
My father stepped back.
“What is that?””
Victor answered.
“Your father’s inheritance.””
My father looked stunned.
“I thought it disappeared.””
“It didn’t.””
Victor looked at Marcus.
“Marcus moved it.””
Marcus’s face hardened.
“That’s a lie.””
Victor smiled.
“You’ve always been terrible at accepting evidence.””
Marcus suddenly moved.
Fast.
He grabbed the folder and threw it across the room.
Dylan reacted immediately.
He pushed Marcus away.
“You’re not leaving.””
Marcus glared.
“You have no idea what you’re involved in.””
Dylan stepped closer.
“I know enough.””
For the first time, Marcus looked old.
Not powerful.
Not dangerous.
Just desperate.
Then Vanessa spoke.
“Marcus.””
Everyone looked at her.
She was holding something.
A small recorder.
“I kept a copy.””
Marcus froze.
“What?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“I knew one day you would turn on me.””
She pressed a button.
Marcus’s voice played.
Clear.
Cold.
*“Once Richard signs the transfer, we don’t need Nia anymore.””*
My blood turned cold.
My father closed his eyes.
The recording continued.
*“The girl is emotional. She’ll believe whatever story we give her.””*
The room went silent.
My hands trembled.
All those years.
All those comments.
All those moments when Vanessa made me feel small.
It wasn’t accidental.
She had planned it.
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“You recorded me?””
She stared back.
“You taught me never to trust anyone.””
Sirens sounded in the distance.
Everyone turned.
Victor looked calm.
“I contacted the authorities.””
Marcus’s face changed.
“You what?””
Victor smiled.
“The truth has waited long enough.””
Marcus moved toward the window.
But there was nowhere to go.
Police lights flashed outside.
And for the first time in twenty-eight years, Marcus Hale looked trapped.
Then he looked at me.
“You think this is over?””
I stared at him.
“It is.””
He smiled.
“No.””
He pointed at my father.
“You still don’t know what happened the night your grandmother died.””
My father froze.
“What?””
Marcus laughed.
“Ask your father who was with her.””
The police entered the house.
But my father wasn’t looking at Marcus anymore.
May you like
He was looking at me.
And I realized Marcus had left us with one final secret.
