Chapter 4: The Woman Who Knew Too Much

For three seconds, nobody moved.

Vanessa stood beside the shattered vase, her white wedding gown stained with water and rose petals. The security officer still held her arm, but she no longer seemed interested in escaping.

She had just admitted that something was supposed to happen after my honeymoon.

And she had said it as though she'd forgotten we were all listening.

I slipped the guardianship papers into the folder and handed it to the hotel security manager.

"Please secure these documents. Don't let anyone remove or alter them.""

Then I turned toward Vanessa.

"What wasn't I supposed to find until after the honeymoon?""

Her lips parted, but no answer came.

"Was it the forged signature? The insurance policy? Or the part where my daughter loses her father and you inherit everything?""

"That's not what the policy means," Vanessa snapped.

"Then explain what it means.""

She glanced toward Sophie, who was sitting on the sofa with her knees pulled against her chest.

"Not in front of the child.""

I felt something cold settle in my stomach.

"You had no problem hitting her in front of me.""

Vanessa's face tightened.

"Daniel, you're twisting everything. I made a mistake with Sophie. I shouldn't have lost my temper. But these documents are being taken completely out of context.""

"What context makes a five-million-dollar life insurance policy with you as the beneficiary reasonable?""

She stared at me.

I took out my phone and held up the scanned application Michael had sent.

"You said you were helping me organize our future. I never authorized this.""

Vanessa lowered her voice.

"Your business has risks. You travel. You drive long distances. I thought we should be prepared.""

"Prepared for what?""

"For anything!""

"Did you forge my signature?""

Her eyes filled with tears again.

"Please don't do this to me.""

I almost laughed.

Not because anything was funny, but because I finally recognized the pattern. Whenever I asked a question she couldn't answer, Vanessa turned herself into the victim.

She had done it when Sophie complained that Vanessa was too rough brushing her hair. She had done it when Sophie said she didn't want to call her Mom. She had even done it when I found a bruise on Sophie's wrist two weeks earlier.

Back then, Vanessa had told me Sophie had fallen while playing.

I'd believed her.

That memory made my hands shake.

"Did you hurt Sophie before today?"" I asked.

Vanessa looked toward the floor.

"Daniel—"

"Answer me.""

"Sometimes she was difficult.""

Sophie began crying.

I immediately turned toward her.

"Sweetheart, you're safe. You can tell me anything.""

She looked at Vanessa, then at me.

"She squeezed my arm when I wouldn't eat dinner.""

Vanessa exploded.

"Because she threw her food on the floor!""

"I didn't!"" Sophie cried.

"You said I had to finish it before I could call Daddy!""

I knelt in front of my daughter.

"Did anything else happen?""

Sophie nodded.

"She made me practice signing my name.""

The room seemed to tilt.

"What do you mean?""

"She gave me papers and told me to write Sophie Carter. I had to do it again and again because she said my handwriting looked ugly.""

Vanessa lunged forward.

"That's enough!""

The security manager stepped between us.

"Ma'am, sit down.""

She turned on him.

"Do you know who I am? I'm supposed to be marrying Daniel Carter today!""

"Not anymore," I said.

She looked at me as if I'd struck her.

Then my phone rang again.

Michael.

I answered on speaker.

"Tell me everything," I said.

My brother sounded exhausted.

"I found the attorney's office. I called the number on the paperwork, and someone there confirmed that Vanessa had been discussing emergency guardianship arrangements.""

"Did they confirm the documents were legitimate?""

"No. The attorney's assistant said they were drafts. She also said the attorney had refused to file anything without your direct authorization.""

I looked at Vanessa.

"So she knew she didn't have permission.""

"Apparently.""

"Did you know about the insurance policy?""

"No," Michael answered immediately.

"I swear to you, Daniel.""

I wanted to believe him. But the photograph and the note made trust feel dangerous.

"Why were you at my house that night?""

Michael hesitated.

"Vanessa told me you wanted me to pick up some financial records from your study. She said you were worried about a problem with your business accounts.""

"Did you go inside?""

"Yes.""

"Did you see Sophie?""

"She was asleep on the couch.""

I closed my eyes.

My daughter had been sleeping in our living room while my brother walked through my house at Vanessa's request.

"What did you take?""

"An envelope from your desk. Vanessa said you needed it for the honeymoon.""

"What was in it?""

"I didn't open it.""

"Michael, you have to understand how this sounds.""

"I do."" His voice cracked.

"I should have called you. I should have checked with you. But she knew details about your business that made everything sound legitimate.""

Vanessa suddenly laughed.

It was a sharp, bitter sound.

"Michael is such a good man," she said.

"Always helping his little brother. Always cleaning up his messes.""

I turned toward her.

"Why are you bringing him into this?""

"Because he knows exactly what happened.""

Michael heard her.

"What does that mean?"" he demanded.

Vanessa ignored him and walked toward the mirror. She pulled the veil from her hair and dropped it onto the dressing table.

"Daniel, do you remember the first time we met?""

"Of course.""

"You told me your biggest fear was leaving Sophie alone in the world.""

I said nothing.

"You told me you'd do anything to make sure she was taken care of.""

"I meant I'd protect her.""

"And I was going to protect her too.""

"By making her sign documents she couldn't understand?""

Vanessa's jaw tightened.

"You don't understand what I was trying to accomplish.""

"Then tell me.""

She looked directly at me.

"I was trying to make sure Sophie wouldn't be the only person who inherited your money.""

For a moment, I couldn't process the sentence.

Then she added, "Because Michael told me what you'd planned to do with your estate.""

My phone slipped slightly in my hand.

"What estate?""

Vanessa smiled without humor.

"Ask your brother why he needed that envelope.""

The call remained connected.

Neither Michael nor I spoke.

Then, from the other end of the line, I heard a sound I'd never heard from my brother before.

May you like

He was crying.

"Daniel," he whispered, "there's something about Emily's death that I never told you.""
