Chapter 13: The Policy That Named My Daughter

For several seconds, I couldn't speak.

Michael sat across from me in the police station, his hands clasped so tightly that his knuckles had turned white. Detective Brooks stood beside the table, waiting for him to explain why his signature appeared on an insurance application I had never seen.

Finally, I found my voice.

"You signed a life insurance policy in my name without telling me?""

Michael shook his head.

"Not exactly.""

I laughed once, without humor.

"That might be the worst possible answer.""

"I didn't sign your name. I signed as a witness. Vanessa told me you had already completed the application and needed someone to verify that the paperwork had been discussed.""

"Did you see me sign it?""

"No.""

"Then why did you witness it?""

Michael looked down.

"Because I trusted her.""

I stood and walked toward the window. Outside, traffic moved through the afternoon as though the world hadn't just split open around my family.

"How much was the policy worth?""

"Two million dollars.""

"And Sophie was the beneficiary?""

"Yes.""

I turned around.

"Why would anyone take out a policy that paid my six-year-old daughter if I died?""

Michael hesitated.

"Vanessa said it was meant to protect Sophie financially. She said if something happened to you, the money would go into a trust until Sophie turned eighteen.""

"And who would control the trust?""

His silence answered before his words did.

"Vanessa," he admitted.

"As Sophie's guardian.""

Detective Brooks pulled out a chair.

"Mr. Carter, did you know that the policy could be used alongside a guardianship petition?""

Michael shook his head.

"No. I thought it was a standard arrangement.""

"Did you receive any money for witnessing the application?""

"No.""

"Did you communicate with the insurance agent?""

"Only once. Vanessa gave me his number because he wanted to confirm my identity.""

Detective Brooks wrote down the details.

I stared at my brother.

"You helped her create a financial arrangement that would put her in control of my daughter if I died.""

"I know how it looks.""

"No, Michael. You know how it sounds. You don't know how it feels.""

His face crumpled.

"I was trying to help you build a life after Emily. I thought Vanessa wanted to make sure Sophie would never struggle financially.""

"Did you ever ask why she needed two separate policies?""

"No.""

"Did you ask why the first policy named her as the beneficiary and the second named Sophie?""

"No.""

"Did you ask why the guardianship papers carried a forged signature?""

"I didn't know about those.""

I believed he might be telling the truth about that particular detail.

But I was finished accepting ignorance as an excuse.

Detective Brooks placed the photograph of Vanessa and Andrew on the table.

"Mr. Carter, you said you were trying to stop Ms. Reed from leaving the hotel with something. What exactly happened?""

Michael rubbed his forehead.

"I saw Andrew waiting outside the ballroom. Vanessa had told me she needed to collect some personal items from her suite. When I went upstairs, I saw Andrew near the service entrance carrying a folder.""

"What did you do?""

"I followed him. He dropped a photograph, and I picked it up. It was the picture of Vanessa standing outside Daniel's house.""

"Why didn't you tell the police?""

"Because I saw the note on the back.""

"What note?""

Michael looked at me.

"The one saying Daniel must not return from the honeymoon.""

My stomach tightened.

"Was that the first time you saw it?""

"Yes.""

"Then why did you leave the photograph in the hotel storage room?""

"I didn't. I gave it to someone I thought could help.""

Detective Brooks leaned forward.

"Who?""

Michael swallowed.

"Dr. Whitaker.""

The name seemed to suck the air out of the room.

"You handed evidence about a possible conspiracy to the doctor whose prescription records are under investigation?"" I asked.

"I didn't know about the records when I gave it to him. He called me that morning and said he needed to speak with me urgently. He told me Vanessa had been asking questions about Emily's death and that I needed to stop her before she did something dangerous.""

"What did you tell him?""

"That I would handle it.""

"And you thought giving him the photograph was handling it?""

Michael lowered his head.

"I panicked.""

Detective Brooks immediately contacted another officer and instructed them to locate Dr. Whitaker.

Then she turned back to Michael.

"Did the doctor tell you where he was going?""

Michael nodded.

"He said he was meeting someone at the Grand Magnolia Hotel before the ceremony.""

"Who?""

"He didn't tell me.""

I thought about the morning. The guests arriving. Vanessa's perfectly arranged flowers. The honeymoon itinerary she'd insisted on keeping in her own bag.

Everything had looked so ordinary.

Then I remembered something else.

Three weeks earlier, Vanessa had asked me to update my emergency contacts and review my estate documents before the wedding. She'd said marriage was the perfect time to make sure everything was organized.

I'd agreed.

I'd even emailed her a copy of my financial records.

She'd used my trust to build a trap around my daughter.

My phone rang.

An officer had located Dr. Whitaker.

He was at a private medical office twenty miles away, preparing to leave town.

Detective Brooks stood.

"We need to speak with him immediately.""

Before she left, she turned toward Michael.

"You're coming with us. We'll need a full account of your involvement.""

Michael nodded, then looked at me.

"Daniel, I know you don't trust me. But there's something I need you to understand.""

I waited.

"When Vanessa first approached me, she said Emily had discovered something about the pharmacy's billing records. She said Emily had planned to expose a scheme involving fraudulent prescriptions and insurance claims.""

I stared at him.

"What scheme?""

"I don't know. She said Emily had collected documents before she died. She wanted me to help locate them.""

"And you agreed?""

"Yes.""

"Why?""

Michael's eyes filled with tears.

"Because she told me that if the documents became public, people would lose their jobs. She said she wanted to settle the matter quietly.""

I felt sick.

"Emily was my wife. You should have told me.""

"I know.""

He took a shaky breath.

"Daniel, I think Vanessa was searching for the same documents that Emily hid before she died.""

I looked at the flash drive Detective Brooks had recovered from the metal box.

The records might explain why someone had altered Emily's prescriptions. They might explain the money, the threats, and the effort to gain control of my daughter.

But they might also reveal something about Vanessa's connection to my wife that I hadn't yet considered.

Detective Brooks picked up the flash drive.

"We'll have this examined immediately.""

As she walked toward the door, Michael called after her.

"Detective, wait!""

She turned.

He reached into his pocket and removed a folded sheet of paper.

"I found this in Vanessa's bridal bag before the wedding. I didn't know what it meant, so I kept it.""

He handed it over.

The document contained a list of names and dates associated with the insurance policies.

At the bottom was a handwritten instruction.

Once Daniel is gone, transfer the trust before Sophie turns seven.

Sophie's seventh birthday was six weeks away.

And beside that instruction was a signature I recognized immediately.

Not Vanessa's.

May you like

Not Michael's.

Dr. Whitaker's.
