Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Betrayal
For a few seconds, the only sound in the office was the ticking clock.
I stared at Mr. Harrison.
“Who my biological father is?””
My mother had raised me. My father, Richard Wilson, had died when I was eleven. I had his eyes, his stubborn chin, and a box of photographs that Mom kept wrapped in tissue paper.
There had never been another man.
At least, that was what I believed.
Nathan stood so quickly that his chair struck the wall.
“This is ridiculous.””
Mr. Harrison didn't flinch.
“Your own signature is on the agreement, Mr. Cole.””
“That doesn't make the allegations true.””
“Then explain why you signed it.””
Nathan opened his mouth, then closed it.
Stephanie grabbed his hand.
“Tell them they're lying.””
He didn't look at her.
I felt the blood drain from my face.
“Stephanie, did you know?””
Her eyes filled with tears, but she didn't answer.
“Did you know?”” I repeated.
“I was trying to protect you.””
The words landed harder than a slap.
“Protect me from what?””
She looked at Nathan, begging him silently to intervene.
He remained frozen.
Alexander moved his chair closer to mine.
“Claire, you don't have to hear this all at once.””
“Yes, I do.””
I turned back to the attorney.
“Tell me everything.””
Mr. Harrison removed a second photograph from the folder. It showed my mother standing beside a dark-haired man outside a hospital. The photograph was old, its edges yellowed.
I recognized Mom immediately.
The man was a stranger.
“Who is he?””
“His name is Daniel Cole,” Mr. Harrison said.
“Nathan's father.””
Nathan's shoulders sagged.
I looked at him, unable to understand.
“Your father?””
“Yes,” he whispered.
Mr. Harrison continued carefully.
“Before your mother married Richard Wilson, she had a relationship with Daniel Cole. It ended before you were born. Daniel was already engaged, and the families agreed to keep the relationship private.””
I shook my head.
“No. Mom would have told me.””
“She intended to,” the attorney replied.
“But Daniel's family threatened to expose the affair and destroy the life she was building. Richard knew there was a possibility you weren't his biological daughter. He chose to raise you as his own.””
My eyes burned.
“So Richard knew?””
“Your father loved you,” Mr. Harrison said.
“That was the only thing he wanted you to understand.””
The distinction mattered. It mattered more than anything else in the room.
Richard had taught me to ride a bicycle. He had carried me on his shoulders at the county fair. He had sat beside my bed during thunderstorms and promised that no matter what happened, I would always have a home.
No secret could erase those memories.
But another question cut through my shock.
“What does Nathan have to do with this?””
The attorney looked down at the agreement.
“Daniel Cole was Nathan's father. That makes Nathan your paternal half-brother.””
The room went silent.
I heard Stephanie inhale sharply.
Then I heard my own voice, distant and broken.
“No.””
Nathan looked at me.
“Claire—”
“No.””
I pushed my chair back and stood.
“You're telling me I was engaged to my own brother?””
“The relationship was not knowingly incestuous,” Mr. Harrison said.
“Neither of you had the information. Your mother discovered the truth shortly before the wedding.””
My stomach twisted.
I remembered the weeks before our breakup. Mom had started calling me late at night, asking strange questions about Nathan's childhood. She had begged me to postpone the wedding without explaining why.
I had accused her of being controlling.
I had told her Nathan was the best man I had ever met.
The memory made my knees weak.
“Why didn't she tell me?””
“Daniel's family had spent years concealing the truth,” Mr. Harrison explained.
“Your mother feared that a public revelation would destroy your reputation and expose you to a legal and financial scandal. She believed she could stop the marriage quietly.””
I looked at Nathan.
“So you left me because you knew?””
He nodded, tears gathering in his eyes.
“My father contacted me. He showed me records. I had a DNA test done.””
“And you didn't tell me?””
“I couldn't.””
“You could have told me the truth!””
“I was ashamed. I was terrified of what would happen to both of us.””
I let out a bitter breath.
“So you slept with Stephanie instead?””
Nathan flinched.
Stephanie stood abruptly.
“Don't put this all on him! I was there when he found out. I helped him handle it.””
“Handle it?”” I stared at her.
“You stole my fiancé, wore my robe, and told me you were in love.””
“I thought if he stayed with me, the secret would never come out.””
The confession hung in the air.
I looked at the diamond ring on her finger.
“Did you love him?””
Stephanie began to cry.
“I did.””
“Or did you love the fact that I couldn't have him?””
She had no answer.
Alexander rose beside me.
“There's still more to this agreement,” he said.
Mr. Harrison nodded reluctantly.
“Your mother believed the secret would remain buried. But Daniel Cole had another concern. He feared that the family trust might eventually pass into Claire's hands, and he wanted to prevent Nathan from gaining control of it.””
I frowned.
“Why would he care?””
“Because the trust was established partly from assets Daniel's family had once attempted to claim. Your mother believed they might challenge your inheritance if your parentage became public.””
I stared at the documents.
“So the signature was forged to take my money before anyone discovered the truth?””
“That's what the evidence suggests,” Mr. Harrison said.
“But the question of who arranged it remains unresolved.””
Stephanie wiped her cheeks.
“It wasn't supposed to happen like this.””
I turned toward her.
“What did you do?””
She backed away from the desk.
Nathan reached for her, but she jerked her hand free.
“Stephanie,” he said, his voice cracking.
“Don't.””
Her eyes darted toward the door.
Alexander stepped between her and the exit.
“Six years ago, your mother signed this agreement to protect Claire. Someone else signed it to protect themselves.””
Mr. Harrison pulled a final page from the folder.
At the bottom was a handwritten note from my mother.
If Claire ever learns the truth, tell her to ask Stephanie what happened the night Daniel Cole died.
My sister stopped crying.
She went completely still.
I looked at her.
“Mom knew something about Daniel's death?””
Stephanie's lips parted.

Then she whispered five words that changed everything.
“Daniel didn't die of natural causes.””
