Chapter 11: The Man in the Hallway

My father pushed me behind him.

The figure stepped into the kitchen, and the weak overhead light revealed a man in a dark coat.

Alexander.

For one bewildering second, relief washed through me. Then I remembered the accusation my father had just made.

“Why are you here?”” I demanded.

Alexander looked from me to Richard.

“Because you stopped answering your phone.””

“I told you I needed space.””

“You told me you were going to a deserted house alone after receiving a threatening message. I wasn't going to sit in a car and pretend that was reasonable.””

My father gave a bitter laugh.

“Still making decisions for other people, Whitmore?””

Alexander's expression hardened.

“Richard.””

“Don't say my name like we're old friends.””

I stepped between them.

“Enough. I want the truth from both of you.””

Alexander took a breath.

“Claire, I can explain why I came here. But first, you need to know that your father is not telling you everything.””

My father gripped the edge of the sink.

“And you are?””

“No,” Alexander replied.

“I'm not. That's why we need to stop lying.””

The answer surprised me.

I had expected him to deny everything, to insist my father was confused, or to dismiss the documents as fabrications.

Instead, he reached inside his coat and placed a small envelope on the table.

“I brought the original security report from the hotel.””

My father stared at it.

“Where did you get that?””

“My company preserved it. The report was part of the investigation into Daniel's financial records.””

“You've had it for six years?””

“Yes.””

“And you never gave it to the police?””

Alexander's face tightened.

“The police received the footage they requested. The additional material was retained because it documented a separate financial transaction. At the time, our attorneys believed the information was protected by the ongoing corporate investigation.””

My father shook his head.

“Convenient.””

“Perhaps. But the report contains something you should see.””

Alexander opened the envelope and spread several pages across the table.

One showed a list of people who had entered the hotel that night.

Richard Wilson.

Nathan Cole.

Eleanor Wilson.

Alexander Whitmore.

And one final name.

Stephanie Wilson.

I stared at the page.

“Stephanie was there too?””

My father nodded slowly.

“She came to the hotel before Nathan. She was frightened, and she believed Daniel had evidence that could destroy her future with Nathan.””

“Why didn't anyone tell me?””

“Because she was protecting herself,” Richard said.

“And because your mother believed the truth would tear the family apart.””

I laughed bitterly.

“The family was already torn apart. You all just left me to believe it was my fault.””

Neither man responded.

I looked at Alexander.

“Did you enter Daniel's room?””

He met my eyes.

“Yes.””

My heart sank.

“When?””

“After Richard left. I went in to retrieve the corporate documents Daniel had promised to provide. He was still alive when I arrived.””

My father slammed his hand against the counter.

“You took the agreement!””

“I took the documents Daniel had authorized me to collect.””

“You knew they named Claire as the beneficiary.””

“I didn't know that until I reviewed them later.””

“And when you found out?””

Alexander fell silent.

I felt something inside me crack.

“You knew my father was alive. You knew Daniel had left me an inheritance. You knew someone had forged my signature. And you kept all of it from me.””

“I knew parts of the story,” he said.

“Not all of it.””

“That's supposed to make me feel better?””

“No.””

He looked exhausted.

“I made a decision six years ago that I believed would protect my company and prevent a scandal. I told myself the documents would eventually be handled through the proper channels. Then Eleanor contacted me, and I realized the matter was connected to you.””

“So you married me?””

The question escaped before I could stop it.

Alexander looked horrified.

“No. Claire, absolutely not. I fell in love with you long before I understood the full history of your family.””

My father gave a harsh laugh.

“Did you tell her about the first time you met?””

I turned toward Alexander.

“What is he talking about?””

Alexander's face went pale.

My father reached into his pocket and removed an old photograph.

It showed me at twenty-four, standing outside a courthouse in Savannah with a stack of legal documents in my arms. I remembered that day. I had been helping a colleague with a property dispute.

In the background stood Alexander.

I stared at him.

“You knew me before we met in Chicago?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

“Our companies were involved in the same property transaction. I saw you arguing with a developer who was trying to evict an elderly couple from their home.””

“And you never mentioned it?””

“I didn't think it mattered.””

My father pointed at the photograph.

“He wasn't the only person watching you that day. Daniel had hired investigators to find out whether you were his daughter. Alexander knew that you were connected to the trust before he ever approached you.””

I stepped back.

“Is that true?””

Alexander swallowed.

“I knew there was a possibility you were connected to Daniel. I did not know you were his biological daughter, and I did not pursue you because of the trust.””

“But you knew enough to investigate me.””

“Yes.””

The word echoed through the kitchen.

I couldn't breathe.

Then my father spoke.

“Claire, there's one more thing you need to know. Alexander didn't come to this house because he was worried about you.””

He pointed toward the front door.

“He came because he knew I still had the original agreement.””

Alexander's jaw tightened.

“That isn't why I came.””

“Then why did you bring the police?””

I turned toward the window.

Red and blue lights flashed across the broken glass.

A car door slammed outside.

Then another.

Alexander looked at me, his expression desperate.

“Claire, I didn't call them.””

The front door burst open.

A uniformed officer stepped into the hallway.

“Richard Wilson? We need you to come with us.””

My father went completely still.

The officer held up a warrant.

“You're under arrest in connection with the death of Daniel Cole.””

I looked at Alexander.

He shook his head.

Then the officer added, “We also have an arrest warrant for the person accused of falsifying the original death certificate.””

May you like

He turned toward the kitchen.

And pointed directly at me.
