Chapter 9: The Mother’s Hidden Choice

I refused to believe it.

Not because I trusted my mother blindly.

But because some truths are too painful to accept immediately.

My mother.

The woman who held my hand through every heartbreak.

The woman who stayed beside me when I graduated.

The woman who helped me choose my wedding dress.

Her name was now sitting in the middle of a financial crime.

“No,” I whispered.

David looked at me.

“I know how this sounds.””

“You don’t know anything.””

My voice cracked.

“You don’t get to walk in here and accuse my mother.””

My father didn’t speak.

That bothered me.

More than David’s accusation.

I turned toward him.

“Dad.””

He looked down.

“Say something.””

His silence destroyed the last piece of certainty I had.

“Did you know?””

My father slowly nodded.

“I knew there were things your mother wasn’t telling me.””

I stared.

“Everyone knew something except me.””

Nobody answered.

I left the room.

I didn’t know where I was going.

I just needed to move.

I found my mother in her favorite café downtown.

Of course she was there.

Because she always went there when she needed peace.

When she saw me, she smiled.

Then she noticed my face.

“What happened?””

I sat across from her.

“Did you transfer twenty million dollars from Bennett Properties?””

The smile disappeared.

The silence lasted too long.

That was all I needed.

“Mom.””

She looked away.

“I can explain.””

I felt tears forming.

“Everyone says that.””

She reached for my hand.

“Claire, listen to me.””

I pulled away.

“Did you?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.””

The word hurt more than I expected.

“Why?””

She looked down.

“Because I was trying to save you.””

I almost laughed.

“Another person protecting me?””

“Claire—”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I’m tired of being protected from the truth.””

My mother wiped her eyes.

“I found out about Richard.””

“And?””

“I knew he was planning something.””

“So you stole money?””

“No.””

She looked at me.

“I moved it.””

“That’s not better.””

She took a deep breath.

“Your father was about to lose everything.””

I frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

She reached into her purse and pulled out a document.

“I discovered your father made a deal years ago.””

I looked at the paper.

“What deal?””

Her voice became quiet.

“A deal with Richard.””

I stared.

“My father?””

She nodded.

“And if Richard couldn’t get the company…”

She paused.

“He would expose what your father did.””

I felt completely lost.

“What did my father do?””

My mother looked at me with tears in her eyes.

“The company you grew up loving…”

She pushed the document toward me.

“Was not built the way you think.””

I looked down.

The signature at the bottom caught my attention.

Thomas Bennett.

My father.

Then I saw another name.

A name I never expected.

Marcus Reid.

My breathing stopped.

“Why is Marcus’s name here?””

My mother looked terrified.

“Because Claire…”

She whispered,

“Marcus wasn’t chosen because of your money.””

I looked up.

“Then why?””

My mother’s voice shook.

“He was chosen because of what your father did to his family.””

I froze.

The café noise disappeared.

The world narrowed to one sentence.

“What did my father do?””

My mother looked at me.

May you like

And then she said the words that changed everything.

“Your father destroyed Marcus’s family twenty years ago.””
