Chapter 11: The Enemy Behind The Enemy
I read Marcus’s message over and over.
You still don’t know who ordered it.
Those words stayed with me.
Because they changed everything.
Marcus was not just a greedy man who wanted my money.
He was part of something much older.
Something darker.
But that didn’t erase what he did.
Pain had an explanation.
It didn’t become an excuse.
I called him.
He answered after one ring.
“I knew you would call.””
His voice sounded different.
Less confident.
More tired.
“Did you know my father’s history?””
“Yes.””
“How long?””
“Before I met you.””
My chest tightened.
“So everything was a lie.””
A pause.
“Not everything.””
I laughed bitterly.
“You don’t get to say that.””
“I did care about you.””
“Then why did you agree to marry me for money?””
Silence.
Finally, he answered.
“Because I thought I could get justice.””
“Justice?””
I walked across the room.
“You were going to destroy my life.””
“I thought your family destroyed mine.””
The anger in his voice surprised me.
For the first time, I heard the pain behind it.
“My father lost everything.””
“And I lost my future because you used me.””
Another silence.
Then he said,
“You’re right.””
That shocked me.
Marcus Reid admitting he was wrong.
I didn’t know what to do with that.
“Who ordered you?””
He didn’t answer.
“Marcus.””
“I don’t know.””
“You expect me to believe that?””
“I swear.””
His voice became urgent.
“Claire, I thought I was working with my mother and Richard.””
“Then who else?””
“I found out too late there was another person controlling things.””
“Who?””
A long pause.
Then he said,
“Your mother.””
I froze.
“What?””
“She wasn’t protecting you.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“She was trying to hide something.””
I ended the call.
I couldn’t listen anymore.
Everyone had a different version.
Everyone claimed they were saving me.
Everyone had secrets.
That night, I went through my mother’s documents.
I wasn’t looking for proof she was guilty.
I was looking for the truth.
At midnight, I found an envelope hidden inside an old family photo album.
My name was written on it.
Claire.
My hands shook as I opened it.
Inside was a letter.
From my mother.
But it wasn’t addressed to me.
It was addressed to Marcus.
“Marcus, I know what my husband did to your family. I know what you believe happened. But you don’t know the entire story.””
I kept reading.
“I know you think Claire is part of this. She is not.””
I stopped.
My heart changed.
The next line was underlined.
“She was born after the betrayal happened. She had nothing to do with it.””
I turned the page.
The final sentence made my blood run cold.
“The person who destroyed William Reid was not Thomas Bennett.””
I stared.
Then I read the name.
The name that had been hidden from me.
The name that connected everyone.
Richard.
My uncle.
I dropped the letter.
Richard wasn’t just a participant.
He was the person who started everything.
The next morning, I went straight to my uncle’s old office.
The building was empty.
Abandoned.
But the door was unlocked.
Inside, I found boxes of documents.
Photos.
Records.
One photo showed Richard standing beside William Reid.
Another showed him shaking hands with someone else.
A woman.
I recognized her immediately.
Diane Reid.
Marcus’s mother.
They weren’t enemies.
They were partners.
Then I found a final document.
A confession letter.
Written by Richard.
The first line made my hands tremble.
“I was the reason William Reid disappeared.””
I barely finished reading when I heard footsteps behind me.
I turned.
Richard stood in the doorway.
Older.
Tired.
But smiling.
“You finally found it.””
I stepped back.
“You ruined all of our lives.””
He closed the door behind him.
“No, Claire.””
May you like
His smile disappeared.
“I saved mine.””
