Chapter 3: The Secret My Father Buried

I left the ballroom before anyone could stop me.

The music had stopped.

The flowers were still perfect.

The candles were still glowing.

But the wedding I had spent months planning had become a room full of secrets.

I walked into the empty garden outside the venue.

The cold air hit my face.

A few minutes later, my father followed.

“Claire.””

I didn’t turn around.

“How long were you going to keep it from me?””

He became silent.

That silence hurt more than any answer.

I finally faced him.

“Dad, what was Marcus talking about?””

My father looked older than he had that morning.

“I was hoping you would never have to know.””

My stomach tightened.

“Know what?””

He sat down on the bench beside the garden path.

“When Marcus first came into your life, I investigated him.””

I stared.

“You investigated my fiancé?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

My father looked away.

“Because I had seen men approach wealthy families before. I wanted to make sure he loved you.””

The anger rising inside me was mixed with confusion.

“And?””

He hesitated.

“That’s where I made my mistake.””

“What mistake?””

My father rubbed his forehead.

“I found something.””

The wind moved through the trees.

I waited.

“What did you find?””

He looked at me.

“Marcus didn’t meet you by accident.””

My chest tightened.

“What does that mean?””

Before my father could answer, my phone rang.

Jordan.

I answered immediately.

“Jordan?””

His voice was serious.

“Claire, I found something while reviewing Marcus’s background.””

I stepped away from my father.

“What?””

There was a pause.

“Your fiancé wasn’t just interested in your money.””

I felt my fingers go cold.

“What else was he interested in?””

Jordan lowered his voice.

“He had been collecting information about Bennett Properties for almost a year before you met.””

I looked toward the ballroom.

The place where I was supposed to say vows.

The place where I almost handed my life to someone who had been planning.

“Are you saying he targeted me?””

“I’m saying there’s more to this than greed.””

My father walked closer.

“Claire?””

I covered the phone.

“Jordan says Marcus researched our company before we met.””

My father’s face changed.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

“You knew.””

The words came out quietly.

My father didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

“Dad…”

He sighed.

“There’s something I should have told you years ago.””

I felt betrayed all over again.

First Marcus.

Now my own father.

“What?””

My father looked toward the ballroom doors.

“When Marcus started dating you, I confronted him.””

My eyes widened.

“You did what?””

“I told him I knew what he was doing.””

“And you still let me stay with him?””

My father looked devastated.

“I wanted to protect you.””

“No.””

My voice broke.

“You wanted to protect me by keeping me in the dark.””

He looked down.

I had never seen my father speechless.

That scared me.

Jordan spoke through the phone.

“Claire, there’s one more thing.””

“What?””

“I found a transfer record.””

My heart sank.

“From who?””

A pause.

Then he said the name.

“Diane Reid.””

I looked at my father.

Then back toward the ballroom.

Marcus’s mother.

“What did she pay for?””

Jordan’s voice became quieter.

“Claire…”

“What?””

“The payment was made before Marcus ever proposed.””

My breathing stopped.

“How much?””

Jordan hesitated.

“Fifty thousand dollars.””

The world seemed to tilt.

My father stepped closer.

“Claire, listen to me.””

But I couldn’t.

Because suddenly I remembered the first time Marcus saw me.

The first compliment.

The first smile.

The first time he said I was different from everyone else.

Maybe none of it was real.

Maybe every moment had been part of a plan.

I looked through the ballroom window.

Marcus was still inside.

Standing beside his mother.

Watching me.

And then his phone lit up.

He read a message.

His eyes lifted.

Straight toward me.

Jordan spoke again.

“Claire, there’s something else attached to that payment.””

I swallowed.

“What?””

The next words changed everything.

“The person who authorized it wasn’t Diane.””

I stared at Marcus.

“Then who was it?””

May you like

Jordan answered.

“It was someone from your own family.””
