Chapter 6

Daniel sat down on the stairs.

Not because anyone told him to.

Because his legs seemed unable to hold him.

Emily stared at him.

“Ten million dollars.”

Daniel looked up.

“It wasn’t theft.”

Rachel almost laughed.

“Then what was it?”

“A temporary transfer.”

“From a company you don’t own?”

Daniel rubbed his face.

“I was going to put it back.”

Emily’s voice was terrifyingly calm.

“Where did it go?”

Daniel hesitated.

“An investment.”

“What investment?”

Richard shouted from downstairs.

“Don’t tell her anything!”

Marcus’s security officer pushed him against the wall.

Rachel looked at Daniel.

“You should probably decide whether you want your mother and uncle choosing your prison strategy.”

Daniel’s face drained.

Evelyn snapped.

“Nobody is going to prison.”

Rachel raised an eyebrow.

“Forged legal documents. Potential embezzlement. Conspiracy to manipulate a custody proceeding. Child abuse evidence.”

She looked toward the blue room.

“You may want to lower your expectations.”

Detective Kane stepped forward.

“That is enough.”

Rachel turned.

“No. It’s barely beginning.”

Kane looked at Daniel.

“Do you want an attorney?”

Daniel whispered, “Yes.”

Evelyn snapped, “Howard, make these people leave.”

Emily stared at Kane.

“These people?”

She held up her phone.

“The owner of the property. Her attorney. Her child.”

Kane’s face tightened.

“You’re obstructing an investigation.”

Rachel immediately stepped closer.

“Specify how.”

Kane said nothing.

Rachel smiled without warmth.

“I thought so.”

The younger officer approached Kane.

“Detective, we need to secure the room and memory cards.”

Kane looked furious.

“Officer Perez, I will handle procedure.”

Perez hesitated.

Then said, “Sir, with respect, the child disclosed confinement, and physical evidence supports it.”

Emily watched Kane.

His loyalty was being tested in front of everyone.

Kane finally nodded.

“Secure the room.”

Perez left.

Rachel leaned toward Emily.

“Good.”

Emily whispered, “What?”

“Now it’s officially documented.”

Daniel suddenly stood.

“The money went to Mercer Development.”

Emily knew the company.

Daniel and Richard had created it two years earlier.

A “family investment platform.”

Daniel had told her it was funded by private investors.

“How much?”

“Ten million total.”

“From Hartwell?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Three transfers.”

Emily’s stomach twisted.

“How did you authorize them?”

Daniel looked at Richard.

Richard shouted, “Shut up!”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“Richard had access to one of the corporate accounts.”

Emily stared at him.

“How?”

Daniel said nothing.

She understood.

“You gave him my credentials.”

“It was an old login.”

“You gave him my credentials.”

“Yes.”

The answer destroyed the last fragment of pity she might have had.

Rachel opened her laptop.

“Emily, revoke every credential now.”

Emily nodded.

Marcus called the company’s cybersecurity director.

Within minutes, Hartwell Holdings accounts began locking.

Passwords changed.

Remote devices disconnected.

Daniel’s phone buzzed.

Then Richard’s.

Then Evelyn’s tablet.

One by one, access disappeared.

Evelyn looked at her screen.

“What did you do?”

Emily met her eyes.

“I closed my door.”

Daniel walked toward her.

“Emily, listen to me.”

“No.”

“I made mistakes.”

“Mistakes?”

“Yes.”

“You stole from me.”

“I borrowed money.”

“You betrayed me.”

He flinched.

“I know.”

“You let your mother terrorize our son.”

His eyes filled.

“I know.”

“You secretly planned to call me unstable.”

“I was scared.”

“And you slept with another woman.”

He looked down.

Emily’s voice broke for the first time.

“Was there anything in our marriage you didn’t destroy?”

Daniel had no answer.

Noah appeared in the hallway.

“Mom?”

Emily immediately wiped her eyes.

She turned.

He held Dino under one arm.

Dr. Brooks stood behind him.

“Can we go now?”

Emily nodded.

“Yes.”

Daniel took one step toward him.

“Noah.”

The boy stopped.

Daniel crouched several feet away.

“I’m sorry.”

Noah stared at him.

Daniel continued.

“I should have protected you.”

Noah said nothing.

“I should have listened.”

Still nothing.

Daniel’s voice cracked.

“I love you.”

Noah looked at Emily.

Then back at his father.

“Why didn’t you help me?”

Daniel began crying.

Because there was no answer that could save him.

Noah waited.

Finally Daniel whispered, “I was weak.”

Noah seemed confused.

Emily wasn’t.

For years Daniel had called silence diplomacy.

Avoidance peace.

Obedience loyalty.

Tonight a six-year-old had named it correctly.

Weakness.

Noah hugged Dino.

“Mom helped me.”

Daniel lowered his head.

“I know.”

Noah walked away.

Emily followed.

Before leaving, she turned toward Marcus.

“Nobody removes anything from this house.”

“Understood.”

“Toothbrushes. Medication. One change of clothes. That’s it.”

Evelyn laughed.

“You think you can dictate what I take?”

“Yes.”

Emily looked at Kane.

“And since this may be evidence, Detective Kane should agree.”

Everyone looked at him.

He had no choice.

“Nothing potentially relevant leaves the property.”

Evelyn’s face hardened.

Emily almost smiled.

For once, Evelyn’s connections worked against her.

Rachel drove Emily and Noah to a hotel owned by one of Hartwell Holdings’ subsidiaries.

They used a private entrance.

No staff announcement.

No social media.

No Mercer relatives.

No cameras.

Inside the suite, Noah climbed into Emily’s bed fully dressed.

He refused to sleep alone.

Emily lay beside him.

“Mom?”

“Yes?”

“Are we poor now?”

She blinked.

“What?”

“Grandma said if Dad leaves, we’ll be poor.”

Emily almost laughed.

“No, baby.”

“Do we still have food?”

Her heart cracked again.

“Yes.”

“All the time?”

“All the time.”

He thought about that.

“Can I eat at the table?”

Emily pulled him close.

“You can always eat at the table.”

Noah was quiet.

Then whispered, “Even if I’m bad?”

She kissed his hair.

“Even when you make mistakes.”

“Grandma says mistakes make people dirty.”

“Grandma was wrong.”

“About me?”

“Especially about you.”

His breathing slowly softened.

Within minutes, he was asleep.

Emily stared at the ceiling.

She wanted to cry.

Instead, her phone buzzed.

Rachel.

She was sitting in the suite’s living room with her laptop.

Emily slipped out of bed.

“What happened?”

Rachel turned the screen.

Bank statements.

Corporate transfers.

Shell companies.

Mercer Development.

“Daniel told the truth about the ten million.”

Emily folded her arms.

“Where is it?”

“That’s the problem.”

Rachel clicked another file.

“Most of it disappeared.”

“Where?”

“Multiple LLCs.”

“Owned by Daniel?”

“Some.”

“Richard?”

“Some.”

“And the rest?”

Rachel looked grim.

“One is connected to Vanessa Cole.”

Emily’s stomach dropped.

“How much?”

“Two million.”

Emily stared at the number.

Daniel hadn’t merely had an affair.

He had transferred her company’s money toward the woman carrying his child.

Rachel continued.

“There’s another transfer.”

“To whom?”

“A trust.”

“Whose trust?”

Rachel turned the laptop.

MERCER LEGACY TRUST.

Beneficiary:

Unnamed minor child to be born to Vanessa Cole.

Emily closed her eyes.

He had stolen money from Hartwell Holdings to fund his unborn child.

A child Noah’s grandmother called the “real son.”

Rachel whispered, “Emily, there’s more.”

Emily opened her eyes.

“What now?”

“I checked the date the trust was created.”

Emily looked.

Seven months earlier.

Almost exactly when Vanessa became pregnant.

“So Daniel knew.”

“Maybe.”

Rachel clicked another page.

“This was signed by a trustee.”

Emily read the name.

Then stopped.

Detective Howard Kane.

She looked at Rachel.

“Kane?”

Rachel nodded.

“He isn’t only Evelyn’s friend.”

Emily suddenly understood why he had wanted her removed from the house.

Why he had resisted documenting the blue room.

Why Evelyn had smiled when police arrived.

Rachel’s voice was low.

“We need to get the evidence away from that detective.”

Emily looked toward the bedroom where Noah slept.

“What do we do?”

“We go above him.”

“To whom?”

Rachel took out her phone.

“The state bureau.”

Before she could dial, Emily’s phone rang.

Unknown number.

She almost ignored it.

Then answered.

“Hello?”

A woman was crying.

“Emily?”

Emily recognized the voice.

Vanessa.

Her entire body tightened.

“What do you want?”

Vanessa sobbed.

“I’m sorry.”

Emily closed her eyes.

“Do not call me.”

“Please.”

“I said—”

“You don’t understand.”

Vanessa’s voice dropped to a whisper.

“Daniel didn’t move that money for me.”

Emily stopped.

Rachel looked up.

Vanessa continued.

“And he doesn’t know about half of what Evelyn did.”

Emily’s pulse quickened.

“Then why is your child’s trust holding two million dollars?”

Vanessa cried harder.

“Because Evelyn made me sign papers.”

Emily gripped the phone.

“What papers?”

“I thought they were for the baby.”

“And?”

“They weren’t.”

Vanessa took a shaking breath.

“They were documents saying that if anything happened to you, Daniel and I would raise Noah.”

Emily went cold.

“What do you mean if anything happened to me?”

Vanessa began sobbing.

May you like

Then whispered the words that changed everything.

“Emily, I think Evelyn was planning for you not to come back from your business trip.”
