Chapter 5

Daniel stopped breathing.

Emily stared at Marcus.

“Who else?”

Marcus looked toward Noah first.

Then at Daniel.

“Richard appears in three recordings.”

Richard backed toward the hallway.

“What?”

Marcus continued.

“And Mr. Mercer appears in one.”

Emily turned slowly.

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

Marcus’s voice remained calm.

“I haven’t watched the full video. My technician sent screenshots.”

“No.”

Daniel stepped toward him.

“That’s impossible.”

Marcus held up his phone.

Emily took it.

The first image showed the east hallway.

Date.

Time.

Evelyn holding Noah by the upper arm.

The second showed Richard standing by the blue door.

The third—

Emily’s heart dropped.

Daniel.

He stood outside the room.

His hand was on the door handle.

Noah was visible inside.

Daniel stared at the image.

“I remember.”

Emily could barely speak.

“What do you remember?”

Daniel’s voice cracked.

“He was having a tantrum.”

Noah shook his head.

“No.”

Daniel looked at him.

“I thought you were.”

“Grandma took my tablet.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Noah continued.

“I cried because she deleted my picture of Mom.”

Emily felt tears burn her eyes.

She remembered that drawing.

Noah had spent an entire afternoon making it.

He had shown her before a business trip.

Two stick figures holding hands under a giant yellow sun.

He had been so proud.

When she returned, he told her he had accidentally lost it.

She believed him.

Now she understood why he had cried.

Daniel whispered, “Mom said you kicked her.”

“I didn’t.”

“I believed her.”

Noah’s voice became tiny.

“You always believe her.”

Daniel broke.

He lowered his head.

Emily had once thought seeing Daniel cry would move her.

Tonight it did nothing.

Because Noah had cried first.

Again and again.

And Daniel had ignored him.

Dr. Brooks knelt beside Noah.

“Would you like to sit somewhere quieter?”

Noah looked at Emily.

She nodded.

“I’ll stay with you.”

They moved to a sitting room away from the others.

Rachel remained with them.

Dr. Brooks did not interrogate him.

She asked if he wanted water.

If he wanted Dino.

If he knew where he was.

Then she explained that he was not in trouble.

That mattered.

Emily could see it.

Noah kept asking whether he had done something bad.

Each time, Dr. Brooks told him no.

Finally, Noah began talking.

Not in a straight line.

Children rarely did.

He mentioned the blue room.

He mentioned Evelyn taking away meals.

He mentioned Richard calling him “charity blood.”

Emily didn’t understand.

“What does that mean?”

Noah shrugged.

“Uncle Richard says I’m not real Mercer blood.”

Rachel looked at Emily.

Then Noah said something worse.

“Grandma says Dad will get a real son after you go away.”

Emily’s entire body went cold.

“What?”

Noah looked frightened.

“She told me not to tell.”

Daniel, standing outside the room, heard.

Emily saw him through the glass doors.

His face changed.

He entered.

“What did she say?”

Emily stood.

“Get out.”

“Emily—”

“Get out.”

Daniel looked at Noah.

“Noah, did Grandma say I was having another son?”

Emily’s head snapped toward him.

Daniel realized his mistake too late.

Rachel stood immediately.

“What does that mean?”

Daniel’s face drained.

Emily stared at her husband.

“Another son?”

“It isn’t what you think.”

She laughed.

The sound scared even her.

“That sentence should be carved on your gravestone.”

Daniel rubbed his temples.

“There’s a woman.”

Emily said nothing.

Noah looked between them.

Dr. Brooks gently touched Emily’s arm.

“We should move this conversation away from him.”

Emily nodded.

She kissed Noah’s forehead.

“Stay with Dr. Brooks for one minute.”

Noah clung to her.

“Don’t leave.”

“I’ll be right outside.”

“Promise?”

“Promise.”

She stepped into the hall.

Rachel followed.

Daniel stood near the staircase.

Emily looked at him.

“Who?”

He couldn’t meet her eyes.

“Vanessa Cole.”

Emily knew the name.

Daniel’s executive assistant.

Twenty-eight.

Friendly.

Always remembered Noah’s birthday.

Once brought Emily coffee during a board meeting.

“How long?”

“Eight months.”

Emily’s knees nearly gave way.

Rachel moved beside her.

Emily held up a hand.

She wanted to stand on her own.

“Is she pregnant?”

Daniel nodded.

“How far?”

“Seven months.”

Emily looked at him.

“You were planning to take Noah from me while preparing a new family.”

“No.”

“Then explain.”

“I didn’t know she was pregnant until three months ago.”

“That makes it better?”

“No.”

“Did Evelyn know?”

He hesitated.

Emily already knew.

“Yes.”

Daniel whispered, “Yes.”

Of course.

Evelyn hadn’t merely hated Noah.

She had been preparing his replacement.

A “real” Mercer grandchild.

Emily looked toward the sitting room.

Noah was holding Dino.

Dr. Brooks was speaking softly to him.

Her little boy had been punished for a war he didn’t even know existed.

Rachel’s phone buzzed.

She read the message.

“Emily.”

“What?”

“My investigator found the custody petition.”

Daniel looked up.

Rachel continued.

“It was never formally filed.”

Emily frowned.

“What?”

“It was drafted. Signed. Not filed.”

Daniel exhaled.

“I told you.”

Rachel gave him a cold look.

“Don’t celebrate yet.”

She turned the phone toward Emily.

“There’s another document.”

It was a prenuptial agreement amendment.

Emily stared.

“I never signed this.”

Rachel nodded.

“I know.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“What amendment?”

Rachel looked at him.

“You tell us.”

He read it.

His face changed.

The document claimed that if Emily were declared mentally incompetent or unfit as a parent, voting control of Hartwell Holdings would temporarily pass to Daniel as spouse and guardian of Noah’s trust.

Emily felt the room tilt.

“This isn’t about custody.”

Rachel’s expression was grim.

“No.”

“It’s about the company.”

Daniel shook his head.

“I’ve never seen that.”

Emily turned on him.

“You expect me to believe anything you say?”

“I’m serious.”

Rachel examined the signature.

“Emily’s signature is forged.”

Daniel stared at his mother.

Evelyn stood at the far end of the hallway.

For the first time all night, she looked scared.

Emily walked toward her.

Slowly.

Everyone watched.

“Did you forge my signature?”

Evelyn lifted her chin.

“I protected my son.”

“From what?”

“From you.”

Emily stopped inches away.

“I built the business that pays for your clothes.”

Evelyn’s lip curled.

“Your father built it.”

“And he left it to me.”

“A mistake.”

Emily finally understood.

This was older than Noah.

Older than the affair.

Older than tonight.

Evelyn had never accepted that Emily controlled the money.

Daniel had married into wealth, but Evelyn had behaved as if the Hartwell fortune had become Mercer property.

Now Vanessa was pregnant.

A new baby was coming.

And if Emily could be removed—

Daniel could control the company.

Noah’s trust.

The mansion.

Everything.

Emily looked at Daniel.

“Did you know about this?”

“No.”

Evelyn laughed softly.

“My son doesn’t have the stomach for difficult decisions.”

Daniel stared at her.

“What did you do?”

She said nothing.

“Mom.”

His voice shook.

“What did you do?”

Evelyn looked at him almost tenderly.

“What you were too weak to do.”

Daniel stepped backward.

Richard suddenly ran.

Marcus shouted.

Richard sprinted down the stairs toward the front door.

Two security officers chased him.

Emily heard shouting.

A crash.

Then silence.

Marcus received a call.

“They have him.”

Rachel frowned.

“Why run?”

Marcus looked toward the red box.

“Maybe because the memory cards contain more than recordings of Noah.”

Emily stared at Evelyn.

“What else is on them?”

Evelyn smiled again.

But this time the confidence was gone.

“I have no idea.”

Marcus’s technician called.

He answered on speaker.

“Marcus?”

“Go ahead.”

“We recovered one of the cards.”

Everyone listened.

“There are videos from the blue room.”

Emily gripped the railing.

“And?”

“A lot of them appear staged.”

“What do you mean?”

“There are instructions being given off camera.”

Emily’s blood went cold.

“What instructions?”

The technician paused.

“A woman tells the boy what to say.”

Noah.

Emily could barely breathe.

“What does she make him say?”

Another pause.

Then:

“She makes him say his mother scares him.”

Emily closed her eyes.

The plan became brutally clear.

They had locked Noah in a dark room.

Frightened him.

Recorded him.

Coached him.

Built a case against her.

Then planned to use her reaction tonight as proof.

Daniel looked like he might vomit.

Rachel’s face hardened.

“This is conspiracy.”

Evelyn scoffed.

“You’re being theatrical.”

Rachel looked at her.

“No.”

She stepped closer.

“I’m being a lawyer.”

Then the technician spoke again.

“There’s one more thing.”

Emily opened her eyes.

“What?”

“One video doesn’t show Noah.”

“Who does it show?”

“Mr. Mercer.”

Daniel froze.

The technician continued.

“He’s meeting with Richard.”

Daniel shook his head.

“I don’t remember being filmed.”

“They’re discussing money.”

Rachel asked, “What money?”

The answer came immediately.

“Transfers from Hartwell Holdings.”

Emily looked at Daniel.

Daniel looked at Richard downstairs.

And suddenly the affair was no longer the biggest betrayal in the room.

May you like

The technician finished quietly.

“They’re discussing how to move ten million dollars before Emily notices.”
