Chapter 4

Emily placed the custody petition on the dresser.

Her hand was steady.

That surprised her.

Inside, she felt like the floor had disappeared.

Her husband had secretly prepared to take Noah from her.

His family had gathered witnesses.

They had cameras ready.

Then Evelyn humiliated Noah until Emily walked in and exploded.

It was a trap.

Daniel rubbed both hands over his face.

“Please let me explain.”

Emily looked at him.

“Start.”

Evelyn interrupted.

“You owe him nothing.”

Emily didn’t take her eyes off Daniel.

“Start.”

Daniel glanced at his mother.

That glance told Emily more than words.

“You knew,” she said.

“I knew about the petition.”

“And tonight?”

He hesitated.

“Tonight got out of control.”

Emily laughed quietly.

“Out of control.”

“I didn’t know Mom would make him kneel.”

Noah stared at his father.

Daniel looked at him.

“I didn’t.”

“Did you know they were going to upset him?” Emily asked.

Daniel’s silence answered.

“What was the plan?”

He swallowed.

“To show that you were… unstable.”

The words landed like a physical blow.

Emily nodded slowly.

“So you provoke my son.”

“No.”

“Humiliate him.”

“No, Emily.”

“Make him cry.”

“That wasn’t what I wanted.”

“Then I come home and react.”

Daniel’s eyes filled with panic.

“I was afraid you were going to leave me.”

Emily stared at him.

“So you tried to take my child first?”

“Our child.”

“No.”

Her voice became ice.

“Tonight you lost the right to hide behind that word.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“I love Noah.”

Noah immediately moved behind Emily.

Daniel saw it.

He stopped.

Emily held up the custody petition.

“This says I am mentally unstable.”

“My mother’s lawyer wrote most of it.”

“You signed it.”

Silence.

“This says I neglect him because I travel for work.”

“You do travel.”

“To keep the company running.”

“I know.”

“This says Noah is afraid of me.”

Daniel’s face twisted.

“I never said that.”

“You signed it.”

“I didn’t read every page.”

Emily stared at him.

Then she smiled sadly.

“Of course you didn’t.”

Daniel looked confused.

“You never read anything.”

She raised the mansion deed.

“You didn’t read this.”

She raised the custody filing.

“You didn’t read this.”

She pointed toward Noah.

“And you never read your own son’s face.”

Daniel looked away.

Marcus stood near the red box.

“Mrs. Mercer, I recommend we preserve these memory cards without viewing them on household devices.”

Emily nodded.

“Take them.”

Evelyn stepped forward.

“You will not take my property.”

Marcus looked at Emily.

She answered for him.

“If those cards contain recordings of my son inside a room in a property owned by my company, they stay.”

“You think ownership makes you powerful.”

Emily met her eyes.

“No.”

She put her arm around Noah.

“This does.”

Evelyn’s face hardened.

“You will regret humiliating this family.”

Emily stared at her.

“You humiliated a child.”

Then headlights swept across the bedroom windows.

Marcus looked outside.

“Police.”

Evelyn smiled.

“There.”

Her confidence returned instantly.

“At least someone sensible is here.”

Emily frowned.

“Who called them?”

Daniel looked at his mother.

Evelyn said nothing.

Minutes later, two uniformed officers entered the mansion.

A third man followed.

Detective Howard Kane.

Emily recognized him.

He had attended Mercer charity dinners.

Golfed with Daniel’s uncle.

Evelyn walked toward him.

“Howard, thank God.”

Emily’s stomach tightened.

Kane looked around.

“What happened?”

Evelyn pointed dramatically toward Emily.

“She attacked us.”

Daniel whispered, “Mom.”

“She overturned furniture and threatened everyone.”

Kane looked at Emily.

“Is that true?”

Emily answered.

“I overturned the dining table after finding my son being forced to eat leftovers on the floor.”

One officer looked uncomfortable.

Kane’s expression barely changed.

“Did you assault anyone?”

“No.”

Richard suddenly appeared at the doorway.

“She shoved me.”

Emily turned.

“I walked past you.”

“You pushed my shoulder.”

“You were blocking my son.”

Kane sighed.

“Mrs. Mercer, I need you to calm down.”

Emily’s eyes narrowed.

There it was.

The phrase.

Calm down.

The same words Daniel had used.

The perfect language for someone they planned to portray as unstable.

She looked around.

“Is anyone recording this?”

No answer.

Emily pulled out her own phone.

“I am now.”

Kane frowned.

“That’s unnecessary.”

“Then you won’t mind.”

Evelyn crossed her arms.

Kane looked at Noah.

“What happened tonight, buddy?”

Noah moved behind Emily.

Kane crouched.

“You can tell me.”

Emily immediately said, “Not without a child advocate.”

Kane stood.

“I’m just asking a simple question.”

“And I’m giving a simple answer.”

His jaw tightened.

Daniel approached.

“Howard, can we talk privately?”

Emily stepped between them.

“No.”

Daniel stared at her.

“This isn’t your business alone.”

“When the subject is the abuse of my son, there will be no private conversation with your family friend.”

Kane’s eyes hardened.

“We’re not here to take sides.”

Emily pointed toward the blue room.

“Then document that room.”

Kane glanced at Evelyn.

Just a glance.

But Emily saw it.

“No.”

She lifted her phone.

“Say that again.”

Kane looked annoyed.

“I said we’ll evaluate everything.”

“There is a locked room downstairs where my six-year-old says he was confined repeatedly.”

“We will evaluate—”

“Go evaluate it.”

One of the younger officers spoke.

“Detective, I can take photographs.”

Kane looked at him sharply.

Then nodded.

“Fine.”

Marcus escorted the officer downstairs.

Emily’s phone buzzed.

Rachel.

She answered.

“Where are you?”

“Still at the house.”

“Police?”

“Yes.”

“Names.”

Emily gave them.

Rachel went silent when she heard Kane.

“Emily, listen carefully.”

“What?”

“Do not let Detective Kane interview Noah alone.”

“I won’t.”

“He handled a complaint involving the Mercer Foundation two years ago.”

Emily’s stomach tightened.

“What complaint?”

“A former employee alleged financial misconduct.”

“What happened?”

“Closed for insufficient evidence.”

Emily looked at Kane.

He was speaking quietly to Evelyn.

“Rachel, come here.”

“I’m already driving.”

The call ended.

Kane approached Emily.

“Mrs. Mercer, based on the statements I’ve received, it may be best if everyone separates tonight.”

“I agree.”

“Mr. Mercer can remain with the child while you find somewhere else to stay.”

Silence.

Daniel looked startled.

Even he hadn’t expected that.

Emily slowly raised her phone.

“Detective, are you suggesting I leave my six-year-old child with the man who signed a secret petition accusing me of instability while his mother locked that child in a room?”

Kane’s face tightened.

“I’m suggesting we reduce conflict.”

“No.”

“Mrs. Mercer—”

“No.”

Kane took a breath.

“Your aggressive behavior tonight has been witnessed by multiple people.”

Emily almost smiled.

There it was.

The trap tightening.

Then Noah stepped out from behind her.

“My mom didn’t hurt me.”

Kane looked down.

Noah’s voice trembled.

“My dad didn’t help me.”

Daniel’s face broke.

“Noah.”

“And Grandma locked me in the dark.”

Evelyn shouted, “Stop lying!”

Noah jumped.

Emily immediately covered him with her body.

The young officer returned from downstairs at that exact moment.

He had heard Evelyn.

Everyone had.

He looked at Kane.

“Detective.”

Kane turned.

“What?”

The officer’s face was serious.

“You need to see the room.”

Evelyn went pale.

The officer continued.

“There are scratch marks on the inside of the door.”

Emily stopped breathing.

Noah looked at the floor.

“I tried to get out.”

Emily closed her eyes.

Her son had scratched the door.

In the dark.

Trying to escape.

Daniel staggered backward.

“Oh my God.”

Emily turned toward him.

“Now you understand?”

He shook his head like he couldn’t breathe.

“I didn’t know.”

Noah looked at him.

“I told you.”

Daniel froze.

The room went silent.

Noah’s tears fell.

“I told you last Sunday.”

Daniel stared at his son.

“You said Grandma was mean.”

“I said she locked me.”

Daniel covered his mouth.

Noah continued.

“You said not to make trouble because she’s old.”

Emily looked at her husband.

Whatever remained of their marriage died in that moment.

Not because Daniel had failed to know.

Because he had been told.

And he had chosen not to hear.

The front door opened downstairs.

Fast footsteps approached.

Rachel appeared with another woman beside her.

“This is Dr. Maya Brooks,” Rachel said.

“Child forensic specialist.”

Kane frowned.

“I didn’t authorize—”

Rachel turned to him.

“You don’t need to.”

Then Marcus’s phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed.

“Mrs. Mercer.”

Emily looked at him.

“What?”

“The backup server.”

Everyone went quiet.

“What about it?”

“My technician found archived copies of the deleted hallway footage.”

Evelyn’s face went white.

Daniel whispered, “Mom?”

Marcus looked directly at Emily.

“It shows who took Noah into that room.”

Emily held her son tighter.

“And?”

May you like

Marcus hesitated.

“It wasn’t only Evelyn.”
