Chapter 6: The Signature on the Hospital Form
For several seconds, I couldn't speak.
Rachel stood on the other side of the kitchen table, clutching the edge of her coat as if she were preparing to run.
I covered the phone.
"Did you sign Emily's medical authorization?""
Rachel closed her eyes.
"Michael—"
"Did you?""
"Yes.""
The word was barely audible.
I stared at her.
"You told me you arrived after Emily was taken into intensive care.""
"I know.""
"You told me you never went into her room.""
"I know.""
"And now an attorney tells me your signature is on her medical authorization?""
Rachel began crying again.
"I didn't know what I was signing.""
I brought the phone back to my ear.
"Daniel, don't hang up.""
"I'm here.""
"Explain what you mean by medical authorization.""
"Three years ago, the hospital needed someone to provide information about Emily's medications and medical history. Rachel signed a form confirming what Vanessa had told the attending physician.""
"Why was Rachel allowed to do that?""
"She was listed as an emergency contact. But that wasn't the issue. The problem is that the information on the form contradicted the medical records Emily had previously provided.""
"What information?""
Daniel hesitated.
"Her medication history. Emily had told her doctor she wasn't taking the particular medication Vanessa identified. The hospital records show that Vanessa insisted Emily had taken it that morning.""
My mouth went dry.
"Are you saying Vanessa gave Emily medication?""
"I'm not making that allegation. I'm telling you there is a discrepancy that was never properly resolved.""
I looked at the report in front of me.
"Why wasn't it investigated?""
"Because the initial cause of death was recorded as a sudden medical event, and there was no immediate evidence of wrongdoing. I was investigating the financial transfers, not Emily's medical care. When I discovered the discrepancy, I raised concerns, but I couldn't establish what had happened.""
I gripped the counter.
"And the man in the photograph?""
"His name is Peter Lawson. At the time, he worked as a private financial investigator. Vanessa hired him to trace the money from Emily's investment account.""
"Why was he in the hospital room?""
"That's what I never understood.""
Daniel's voice grew quieter.
"I arrived at the hospital because Emily had asked me to bring her copies of the financial records. When I got there, Peter was already inside her room with Vanessa. Rachel arrived shortly afterward.""
I looked at my sister.
She had stopped crying.
Instead, she was staring at the photograph as though it contained something she wished she could erase.
"Daniel," I said, "did Emily ever regain consciousness?""
A long pause followed.
"According to the records I was able to obtain, she briefly responded to a nurse earlier that afternoon. But by the time I arrived, she was unresponsive.""
"Did she say anything?""
"I don't know. I wasn't there when the nurse first examined her.""
"Did anyone investigate whether she had been given the wrong medication?""
"The hospital reviewed the case. They found insufficient evidence to determine that a medication error had occurred. Michael, I want to be very clear. A discrepancy in a medical record does not establish that someone deliberately harmed your wife.""
I swallowed.
"Then why does everyone seem afraid of what I'll discover?""
"Because the financial investigation never reached a conclusion. And because someone has been trying to access Emily's estate documents again.""
I looked at the blue folder.
"Vanessa.""
"I believe she attempted to access the account. I cannot yet tell you why.""
"Can you meet me tomorrow?""
"Yes. Bring every document you've found. Don't alter the originals, and don't make accusations you can't support. We need to establish what happened, not assume we already know.""
I agreed to meet him at nine the next morning.
When I ended the call, the kitchen seemed unnaturally quiet.
Rachel sat down heavily.
"I didn't hurt Emily," she whispered.
I looked at her.
"Then tell me why you signed that form.""
She pressed both hands against her face.
"Vanessa told me Emily had asked her to manage the hospital paperwork. She said the doctors needed someone to confirm Emily's medication, and that if I didn't sign, there would be delays.""
"Why didn't Vanessa sign it herself?""
"She said she wasn't officially family yet. She was afraid the hospital wouldn't accept her information.""
That made no sense.
"Why didn't you call me?""
"You were on your way to the hospital. Vanessa told me you were too upset to handle paperwork, and that we needed to keep things calm.""
I stared at her.
"You let Vanessa make decisions for all of us.""
"I thought I was helping.""
"Did you read the form?""
Rachel shook her head.
"Not properly. I saw Emily's name and the section about medication. Vanessa told me what to write, and I signed where she pointed.""
My anger was so intense that I had to walk away from the table.
Rachel followed me with her eyes.
"I know you hate me right now.""
"I don't know what I feel.""
"I deserve that.""
I stopped near the window.
Outside, the rain had eased into a fine mist. The streetlights reflected off the wet pavement, and somewhere in the distance a car passed with its headlights sweeping across the living room.
After a moment, Rachel spoke again.
"There's one more thing I haven't told you.""
I turned.
"What now?""
"The night Emily died, Vanessa came to my house.""
I frowned.
"Why?""
"She said she needed to borrow money for legal expenses. She told me the financial investigation had become complicated and that she needed to pay Daniel to continue working on it.""
"How much?""
"Twenty thousand dollars.""
I stared at her.
"You gave her twenty thousand dollars?""
Rachel nodded.
"She said Emily would have wanted me to help. I transferred the money the following morning.""
"Do you have the records?""
"Yes. I brought them.""
She opened her handbag and pulled out a bank statement.
The transfer was dated October 17, three years earlier.
The recipient was an account registered to a company called Lawson Consulting Group.
I photographed the statement.
"Why didn't you mention this when we started talking?""
"Because I didn't understand what it meant until last week.""
She took a shaky breath.
"Michael, I searched for that company. It was dissolved six months after Emily died. The registered director was Peter Lawson.""
The same man who had been standing beside Emily's hospital bed.
I looked at the transfer again.
Twenty thousand dollars.
Paid one day after my wife died.
I felt sick.
Then my phone rang.
Vanessa.
I watched her name flash across the screen before answering.
"Michael," she said, her voice trembling.
"I'm sorry about yesterday. I was upset, and I shouldn't have touched Lily.""
I said nothing.
"I want to come home. We need to talk about our marriage.""
"This isn't about our marriage anymore.""
She went silent.
Then she said, "I know you've been talking to Rachel.""
I glanced at my sister.
"How do you know that?""
"Because she called me.""
Rachel's head snapped up.
"I didn't!"" she whispered.
Vanessa continued, her voice suddenly hardening.
"Michael, whatever she tells you, remember that she signed the hospital paperwork. She was there when Emily died. If you start digging into the past, you might discover things about your own sister that you won't be able to forgive.""
I felt my blood turn to ice.
"Are you threatening Rachel?""
"I'm warning you. She's not the innocent person you think she is.""
"What did you do with the seven hundred dollars, Vanessa?""
A pause.
Then she whispered, "You don't understand. I needed you to send Lily away before someone found out what she saw.""
I stopped breathing.
"What did Lily see?""
Vanessa made a small, frightened sound.
Then the call disconnected.
I immediately called her back.
She didn't answer.
I looked at Rachel, who had gone completely pale.
"Michael," she whispered, "what if Vanessa knows Lily saw something at the hospital?""
Before I could respond, I heard small footsteps on the stairs.
Lily stood at the top, clutching her stuffed rabbit.
Her eyes were wide.
"Daddy?""
I hurried toward her.
"Sweetheart, what's wrong?""
She came down slowly, looking from me to Rachel.
"I remember something now.""
I knelt in front of her.
"Remember what?""
She swallowed hard.
"The man with the silver watch. I saw him before Grandma died.""
I felt my heart pounding.
"Where, sweetheart?""
Lily's eyes filled with tears.
"At the hospital. Mommy Vanessa told me to stay in the waiting room, but I went looking for her because I was scared.""
She clutched my shirt.
"I saw her talking to that man outside Grandma's room. And Daddy...""
Her voice broke.
"What is it, sweetheart?""
Lily looked directly into my eyes.
"The man gave Mommy Vanessa a little bottle. She put it in her purse, and then she went into Grandma's room.""
Rachel covered her mouth.
I held Lily close, struggling to keep my voice steady.
"Are you sure that's what you saw?""
Lily nodded.
Then she whispered the words that shattered the last of my certainty about the woman I had married.
"Grandma was awake when Mommy went inside. But when Mommy came out, Grandma wasn't moving anymore.""
I stared at my daughter.
Three years of grief, unanswered questions, and carefully buried secrets suddenly converged into one terrifying possibility.
I didn't know whether Vanessa had harmed Emily.
I didn't know what had been in that bottle.
And I didn't know whether an eight-year-old child's frightened memory could explain what the medical records could not.
But I knew one thing.
I would not let anyone frighten Lily into silence again.
I reached for my phone and called Daniel Brooks.
When he answered, I spoke slowly.
"Daniel, we need to reopen the investigation into Emily's death.""
He didn't ask why.
He simply replied, "Michael, I was afraid you'd say that.""
Then he added something that made my blood run cold.
"Because Peter Lawson contacted me this morning. He says he has evidence that could prove what happened in that hospital room.""
I gripped the phone.
"Where is he?""
Daniel hesitated.
"That's the problem. Peter has disappeared.""
May you like
And before I could ask another question, Daniel told me the last thing I ever expected to hear.
"His wife reported him missing yesterday morning. She says the last person he planned to meet was Vanessa.""
