Chapter 5: What Rachel Had Been Hiding
I stared at the photograph.
Vanessa stood beside Emily's hospital bed wearing a black coat, her hair pulled into a tight ponytail. Emily lay unconscious beneath a white blanket, an oxygen tube beneath her nose.
In the corner of the picture stood a man wearing a dark suit.
I recognized him immediately.
The man from the security footage.
"Who took this?"" I asked.
Rachel closed the kitchen door behind her.
"I did.""
"You were at the hospital when Emily collapsed?""
"Yes.""
"You told me you arrived after she was taken into intensive care.""
Rachel looked down.
"I lied.""
The word hung between us.
I had spent three years believing Rachel had been one of the few people who never lied to me about Emily's death.
Now I didn't know what to believe.
"Sit down," I said.
She remained standing.
"Michael, I don't deserve to ask you for anything. But I need you to listen before you decide what to do.""
"Then start talking.""
Rachel placed the envelope on the kitchen table.
"Six months before Emily died, she discovered that money was disappearing from an investment account she had inherited from our father.""
I frowned.
"Our father died before Lily was born. Emily never mentioned an investment account.""
"Because she didn't want to worry you. She managed it herself. Most of the money was intended for Lily's education and future.""
"How much money?""
Rachel swallowed.
"Just under four hundred thousand dollars.""
I stared at her.
"What?""
"Emily had invested carefully over the years. The account grew, and she added money whenever she could. She wanted Lily to have enough to attend college without worrying about loans.""
I pulled out a chair.
"Where did the money go?""
"At first, Emily thought it was a bank error. Then she discovered that someone had transferred several large amounts into an account she didn't recognize.""
"Whose account?""
Rachel hesitated.
"Vanessa's.""
The kitchen seemed to grow smaller.
"You're telling me my wife stole four hundred thousand dollars from my daughter's future?""
"I'm telling you Emily believed Vanessa had arranged unauthorized transfers. She contacted an attorney named Daniel Brooks, the same man in your photograph.""
I remembered Emily's handwritten note.
Daniel says the transfer was never authorized.
"Why didn't Emily report it?""
"She was trying to recover the money quietly. Daniel told her that if the transfers were fraudulent, the bank records would help establish what happened. But Vanessa claimed someone else had used her account.""
"Did Emily believe her?""
"At first, she wanted to. Vanessa was already part of the family. She was dating you, and Emily didn't want to destroy your relationship without proof.""
I leaned forward.
"How did you get involved?""
Rachel rubbed her hands together.
"Emily asked me to meet Daniel on October 14. He had found something in the account records that frightened her.""
"What?""
"A signature.""
"Whose signature?""
"Yours.""
I felt as though someone had struck me in the chest.
"That's impossible. I never authorized any transfer.""
"I know. Emily knew, too. The signature appeared on a document approving a change to the account's management. But you were traveling for work when the document was supposedly signed.""
I remembered that business trip. I had spent four days in Chicago, attending meetings and staying at a hotel near the airport.
Rachel continued.
"Emily suspected someone had forged your signature. She wanted to confront Vanessa, but Daniel advised her to wait until he could verify the records.""
"And then Emily died.""
Rachel nodded, tears gathering in her eyes.
"On October 16, I received a call from Vanessa. She said Emily had collapsed and asked me to meet her at the hospital. When I arrived, Daniel was already there.""
"Why was he there?""
"He said he was helping with the financial investigation. But when I asked to see Emily, Vanessa told me the doctors wouldn't allow visitors.""
I looked at the photograph again.
"Yet you took this picture.""
"I went into the room when Vanessa stepped into the hallway. Emily was unconscious, but she was alive. Daniel was standing beside the bed, checking something on the monitor.""
"What monitor?""
"I don't know. He told me he was waiting for the doctor.""
I stood up so abruptly that my chair scraped against the floor.
"Why didn't you tell me any of this three years ago?""
Rachel flinched.
"Because Vanessa threatened me.""
"With what?""
"She said if I told you about the money, she would claim I had helped Emily move it. She had copies of financial documents with my signature on them. I had signed some papers for Emily months earlier, but I hadn't read every page carefully.""
Rachel covered her face.
"She told me I could lose everything. My job. My house.
My reputation. And then she said that if I dragged you into the investigation, Lily would lose the only stable home she had left.""
"You let her threaten you into silence?""
"I was scared!""
"So was I!"" My voice cracked.
"I buried my wife without knowing someone might have stolen from her daughter. I spent three years wondering whether I could have saved her. And you knew there was something wrong!""
Rachel began sobbing.
"I thought if I stayed quiet, I could protect Lily until I found proof. But Vanessa married you, and everything became more complicated. I couldn't accuse her without evidence.""
I turned away, trying to control my breathing.
Then I noticed the envelope was thicker than the photograph alone could explain.
"What else is in there?""
Rachel wiped her eyes.
"Something I found in Emily's old storage unit. I discovered it last week when I finally decided I couldn't keep hiding.""
She removed a folded sheet of paper.
It was a copy of a medical report.
I recognized the hospital's name at the top.
Below it was Emily's full name, followed by the date of her admission.
And near the bottom, a note had been added in handwriting that wasn't part of the printed report.
*Patient's personal medication not located. Family member states medication was taken as prescribed.*
I read the sentence twice.
"Emily wasn't taking any medication," I whispered.
Rachel's face crumpled.
"She was prescribed something for migraines during the final month of her life. Vanessa told the doctors that Emily had taken her usual dose.""
I stared at her.
"Vanessa wasn't Emily's medical decision-maker.""
"I know.""
"Then why was she answering questions about Emily's medication?""
Rachel didn't answer.
I pulled out my phone and photographed the report.
Then I called Daniel Brooks.
He answered almost immediately.
"Mr. Carter?""
"My name is Michael Carter. I need to talk to you about Emily's death, the financial transfers, and a photograph taken at the hospital three years ago.""
Silence.
Then Daniel said something I wasn't prepared for.
"Mr. Carter, I was wondering how long it would take you to find that photograph.""
My grip tightened around the phone.
"Why?""
"Because the man in that photograph wasn't supposed to be there.""
"Who was he?""
Daniel lowered his voice.
"Before I tell you, I need to ask you something. Has Vanessa contacted you today?""
"No.""
"Then listen carefully. Do not confront her about the hospital report until we meet. If she realizes you've found it, she'll destroy the last piece of evidence that connects her to Emily's final forty-eight hours.""
I looked at Rachel.
She was staring at me with an expression I had never seen on her face before.
Pure terror.
Daniel continued.
"And Michael? There's something else you need to know.""
"What?""
"The person who signed Emily's final medical authorization wasn't Vanessa.""
My blood ran cold.
"Then who was it?""
May you like
Daniel paused.
"Your sister.""
