Chapter 8: The Man Behind the Accident
Daniel didn't speak for nearly a minute.
He simply stared at the photograph.
His father, Richard Hayes, had been a respected attorney in Atlanta for decades. He had represented wealthy families, corporate executives, and several major construction companies.
I'd met him twice.
Both times, he had seemed like a polite, harmless older gentleman.
Now his face was staring back at us from a photograph connecting him to Vanessa.
"That's impossible," Daniel finally said.
Detective Mitchell pulled out a chair.
"Mr. Hayes, when was the last time you spoke to your father?""
"Three weeks ago.""
"Did he mention Marcus?""
Daniel shook his head.
"Not directly.""
"Did he mention Evelyn?""
Daniel looked down.
"He told me she had been dead for years.""
The detective opened her notebook.
"Your father has been receiving payments from a company connected to Adrian Cole. We've traced several transfers over the past six months.""
I leaned forward.
"How much?""
"Approximately $210,000.""
Daniel rubbed his face.
"Why would my father be involved in this?""
Detective Mitchell answered carefully.
"We don't know yet. But the payments appear connected to the same financial network that transferred money out of your company.""
I looked at Daniel.
"Your father helped steal from me?""
"I don't know, Marcus.""
His voice cracked.
"I swear I don't know.""
I believed him.
At least, I wanted to.
Detective Mitchell placed another document on the table.
"There's something else. The vehicle inspection company that received the $45,000 payment was registered under a holding company controlled by Richard Hayes.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"So he arranged the inspection.""
"That's what we're investigating.""
Daniel stood abruptly.
"I need to speak to him.""
"Not without us," the detective replied.
"He's my father.""
"And he's potentially connected to an attempted murder.""
Daniel stopped.
The room fell silent.
I looked at the photograph of Richard and Vanessa.
"Where is he now?""
Detective Mitchell closed her notebook.
"We believe he's at his law office.""
At 4:30 that afternoon, we arrived at the Hayes Legal Group building.
The office occupied the top two floors of a glass tower overlooking downtown Atlanta.
Richard Hayes had worked there for more than thirty years.
Daniel walked beside me, his hands buried in his coat pockets.
He looked like a man approaching a funeral.
At the reception desk, a young assistant recognized him.
"Mr. Hayes! Your father is in a meeting.""
"I need to see him.""
"Should I let him know?""
Daniel placed both hands on the counter.
"Tell him his son is here.""
The assistant disappeared into the hallway.
A minute later, Richard emerged.
He was tall, silver-haired, and impeccably dressed.
"Daniel," he said, smiling.
"What a surprise.""
Then his eyes moved toward me.
"Marcus. I heard about your recovery. Wonderful news.""
I studied his face.
"Thank you.""
He extended his hand.
I didn't take it.
Richard slowly lowered his arm.
"Is something wrong?""
Daniel stepped forward.
"Why is your name appearing in financial records connected to Adrian Cole?""
Richard's expression barely changed.
"Who?""
"Don't play games.""
"Daniel, this isn't the place.""
"Then let's go somewhere private.""
Richard glanced at the detective behind us.
His smile disappeared.
"I see.""
He turned toward his office.
"Come in.""
Inside, the room smelled of expensive leather and polished wood. Framed photographs covered one wall, including several of Richard with prominent Atlanta business leaders.
He closed the door.
Then he looked directly at me.
"Marcus, whatever Vanessa has told you, remember that she's under considerable pressure.""
I frowned.
"How do you know what Vanessa told me?""
Richard paused.
Daniel stepped closer.
"Answer the question.""
Richard walked toward his desk.
"Your father and I had a professional relationship. He asked me to help structure certain assets. That's all.""
"Then why did you pay Adrian?""
"I didn't.""
"We have the records.""
Richard opened a drawer and removed a file.
"Your father created a private trust nearly thirty years ago. I was responsible for maintaining its legal documentation.""
He placed the file on the desk.
"Unfortunately, your father made several decisions that complicated the arrangement.""
I opened it.
Inside were copies of old trust agreements.
One document listed my father as the original trustee.
Another listed Sarah and me as beneficiaries.
But the final document contained something unexpected.
It named Richard Hayes as the successor trustee.
Daniel stared at it.
"You told me you had nothing to do with Bennett Industrial Solutions.""
"I was protecting you.""
"From what?""
Richard looked at him.
"From your mother.""
Daniel's jaw tightened.
"She's alive.""
Richard's expression changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
He slowly sat down.
"Where did you hear that?""
"From the documents.""
Richard rubbed his temples.
"Your mother was involved in things you wouldn't understand.""
Daniel stepped forward.
"She's my mother.""
"She made her choices.""
"What choices?""
Richard didn't answer.
Instead, he turned toward me.
"Marcus, your father and I had an agreement. The company was never supposed to become what it is today.""
"What does that mean?""
"Your father wanted to use the trust to protect certain assets from a business partner. He built a structure that would eventually transfer control to you and your sister.""
"And you were supposed to manage it.""
"Yes.""
"Until you decided to take it.""
Richard's expression hardened.
"Be careful, Marcus.""
I stepped closer.
"My car was sabotaged. My wife forged my signature. More than half a million dollars disappeared from my company. Your name is connected to all of it.""
Richard stood.
"Your accident was unfortunate.""
I stared at him.
"Unfortunate?""
He adjusted his cufflinks.
"You were driving too fast. These things happen.""
Daniel pulled out his phone.
"Then perhaps you can explain this.""
He played the recovered audio recording.
Richard listened without moving.
When the recording ended, he looked at his son.
"You shouldn't have come here.""
Detective Mitchell stepped forward.
"Mr. Hayes, you're coming with us.""
Richard laughed quietly.
"You don't have enough to arrest me.""
Then he reached into his desk drawer.
Not for a weapon.
For a photograph.
He placed it in front of Daniel.
It showed Evelyn Hayes standing beside my father.
And between them was a little boy.
Me.
On the back, someone had written a date.
The date was twenty-nine years earlier.
Daniel stared at the photograph.
"Why is Marcus in this picture?""
Richard looked at him.
"Because your mother was the one who delivered him.""
I felt the room tilt.
"What?""
Richard slowly turned the photograph around.
May you like
Then he spoke the words that would change everything.
"Marcus, your mother didn't die when you were born.""
