Chapter 6: The Secret My Father Buried

Daniel took the envelope from my hands.

He examined the signature, the paper, and the old postage mark.

For nearly a minute, he said nothing.

Then he pulled a photograph from his wallet.

It showed a woman standing beside a younger Daniel at what looked like a family gathering. Her dark hair was tied behind her head, and she wore a pearl necklace.

He placed the photograph beside the envelope.

"That's my mother," he said.

Sarah moved closer.

"You're sure?""

"Absolutely. She used to sign every birthday card with the same unusual capital E.""

He pointed to the writing.

The letter on the envelope had the same distinctive shape.

"But why would your mother be involved with my father?"" I asked.

Daniel looked confused.

"I don't know.""

I stared at the photograph.

"How did my father know her?""

Daniel sat down.

"They worked together. At least, that's what my father once told me. He said my mother had helped with some legal paperwork for a family business in Atlanta.""

Sarah opened her laptop.

"Could she have been your father's attorney?""

"Possibly.""

I unfolded the letter again and read it carefully.

My father's handwriting was steady, but the words carried a warning I couldn't ignore.

He mentioned the company, the house, and a trust established before I was born.

But he never mentioned Vanessa.

At the bottom of the second page, he had written:

The trust can only be changed by both children. Neither one can act without the other.

I looked at Sarah.

"Both children?""

She nodded slowly.

"That's us.""

Daniel reached for the letter.

"Which means Vanessa cannot legally transfer the company or the house without Sarah's signature.""

I felt a strange mixture of relief and anger.

"Then why did she go to all this trouble?""

Sarah answered before Daniel could.

"Because she doesn't want to buy the company. She wants control of the trust itself.""

Daniel examined the document again.

"Where is the original?""

Sarah shook her head.

"I don't know. Dad told me once that he had placed it somewhere neither of us would think to look.""

I leaned back.

"The house.""

She looked at me.

"What?""

"The cellar. That's why you were visiting the property.""

Sarah nodded.

"I found something, but I couldn't open it.""

She took a small brass key from her bag.

It looked exactly like the one in the photograph.

"Where did you get that?"" I asked.

"It was hidden inside Dad's old desk. I found it three months ago.""

Daniel stood.

"Then we need to go there.""

"We can't just walk into that house," Sarah said.

"Vanessa knows I've been visiting.""

"She doesn't know what we've found," I replied.

Sarah looked at me with concern.

"Marcus, you're still recovering. And Adrian isn't the kind of man who makes empty threats.""

I thought of the medication bottle, the forged signatures, and the security photograph showing him beneath my car.

"Neither am I.""

Daniel immediately raised a hand.

"We're not going there without protection. I'll contact the investigator.""

He made two calls.

The first was to a private investigator named Robert Miller, the mechanic's contact who had helped uncover the garage footage.

The second was to Detective Laura Mitchell, who had recently begun reviewing the evidence connected to my accident.

She agreed to meet us near the property, but warned us not to enter if we believed anyone was inside.

By late afternoon, we were parked two streets away from my childhood home.

The house looked exactly as it had when I was a boy.

The same oak tree.

The same brick pathway.

The same white porch.

But now I saw things I hadn't noticed in years.

The side gate was damaged.

A window near the kitchen had been left slightly open.

And there was a fresh tire mark across the grass.

"Someone's been here," Sarah whispered.

Daniel took out his phone.

"I'll contact Detective Mitchell.""

Before he could make the call, a black SUV appeared at the end of the street.

Sarah recognized it immediately.

"That's Adrian's car.""

The vehicle slowed near the house.

My stomach tightened.

"Get down.""

We ducked behind Daniel's car.

Through the windshield, I watched Adrian step out.

He looked around, then walked directly toward the front door.

He didn't knock.

He used a key.

"How does he have access?"" I whispered.

Sarah's face went white.

"Vanessa gave him one.""

Adrian disappeared inside.

I reached for my phone.

"Call the detective.""

Daniel nodded.

But before he could dial, my screen lit up.

A message from an unknown number.

*You should have stayed blind, Marcus.*

Another message followed.

This one contained a photograph.

It showed the inside of the house.

More specifically, it showed the old cellar door.

Someone had painted a red circle around the brass lock.

Then another message arrived.

*Your father left you something. We found it first.*

I looked toward the house.

A light had appeared in the cellar window.

"Sarah," I whispered, "is there another entrance?""

She nodded.

"The old coal chute. Behind the garage.""

We moved carefully along the neighboring property, keeping below the window line.

Sarah led us toward a narrow passage between the garage and the wooden fence.

A metal cover sat near the ground.

She knelt and pulled it aside.

"That's the entrance Dad used when we were children," she whispered.

I looked at Daniel.

"Stay here and call the detective.""

He grabbed my arm.

"Marcus, don't be reckless.""

"I'm not leaving my sister alone.""

Sarah lowered herself into the narrow opening.

I followed.

The passage was dusty and smelled of damp stone. At the end, a short staircase led to the cellar.

We could hear voices above us.

Adrian's voice came first.

"Where is it?""

Vanessa answered.

"I told you, I don't know.""

"You said Marcus's father kept everything here.""

"I said he might have.""

A drawer slammed.

Adrian swore.

Then came the sound of breaking wood.

Sarah gripped my arm.

"They're looking for the trust.""

We reached the bottom of the stairs and crouched behind an old storage cabinet.

Through a narrow gap, I could see Adrian standing beside my father's workbench.

Vanessa was holding a wooden box.

"Look!"" she said.

She opened it.

Inside lay several old documents tied with a red ribbon.

Adrian grabbed them.

"Is it the original?""

Vanessa searched through the pages.

Then she suddenly smiled.

"Yes.""

My heart began pounding.

After all those years, they had found the document that could determine the ownership of everything.

Adrian flipped through the pages.

His smile slowly disappeared.

"What the hell is this?""

Vanessa snatched the document from him.

Her expression changed when she reached the final page.

"No," she whispered.

Adrian grabbed her wrist.

"What does it say?""

Vanessa backed away.

"It can't be right.""

Sarah leaned closer to me.

"What is it?""

I couldn't answer.

Even from where I was hiding, I could make out the large heading printed across the final page.

*THE BENNETT FAMILY TRUST — BENEFICIARY DESIGNATION.*

Below it were two names.

Mine.

And Sarah's.

But underneath those names was a third line.

A name neither of us had expected to see.

*Evelyn Hayes.*

Daniel's supposedly deceased mother.

Then Adrian said something that made my entire body go cold.

"Vanessa, forget the company. We need to find the other beneficiary before Marcus does.""

Vanessa slowly turned toward the cellar stairs.

"I think we have a bigger problem.""

May you like

She looked directly at the cabinet where Sarah and I were hiding.

"Because Marcus is already here.""
