Chapter 8: The Guardian They Had Already Chosen

James Carter's office was on the second floor of an old brick building in downtown Atlanta.

When we arrived, a light was still burning behind his frosted glass door.

He was waiting for us.

He stood up as soon as he saw my father.

“Robert.””

Dad shook his hand.

“James.””

For a few seconds, neither man spoke.

Then James embraced him.

“I'm sorry I didn't reach you sooner.””

My father stepped back.

“Elaine trusted you. Why didn't you tell me what was happening?””

James closed the office door.

“Because I received a call from Dr. Harrison the day after Elaine died. He told me you were grieving, that you wanted privacy, and that you had instructed him to handle everything.””

“I never said that.””

“I know that now.””

James motioned toward two chairs.

I placed the wooden box on his desk.

He examined the will, the flash drive, and the photograph.

Then he removed a pair of reading glasses.

“Your mother was a very careful woman,” he said.

“She anticipated that someone might challenge the ownership of the house.””

He opened a filing cabinet and removed a thick folder.

Inside were copies of legal documents.

One caught my attention.

It was a guardianship application dated six years earlier.

The proposed guardian was Vanessa.

I stared at the paper.

“She tried this before?””

James nodded.

“Not successfully. Your mother discovered that Vanessa had been asking questions about Robert's mental capacity. She instructed me to monitor any legal activity involving the property.””

“Why didn't she tell me?””

“Because she believed you were being targeted.””

I leaned forward.

“Targeted for what?””

James placed a second document on the desk.

It was a financial agreement involving my name.

The agreement described a proposed loan secured against the house.

The amount was $950,000.

I recognized the document immediately.

It was nearly identical to the application we'd found in Vanessa's purse.

James pointed to the signature.

“That's why I need you to look carefully.””

I examined it.

My signature was at the bottom.

But the date was from eight months before my wedding.

“I never signed this.””

James nodded.

“Your mother suspected that someone had obtained copies of your signature from employment records and used them to prepare financial documents.””

“Why would they need my signature if the house belongs to Dad?””

“Because the scheme involves more than ownership.””

He opened another folder.

Inside was a corporate registration.

A company named Williams Property Holdings LLC had been created using my personal information.

I was listed as the managing member.

Vanessa was listed as the registered agent.

My stomach turned.

“They created a company in my name?””

“According to the filing, yes.””

“Without my permission?””

James nodded.

“And that company has been named in a proposed financing arrangement involving your father's home.””

I stood.

“This is fraud.””

“It appears to be a serious attempt at fraud. But we need the original records and a formal investigation.””

My father leaned forward.

“What does Harrison get out of this?””

James removed another document.

It was a payment schedule.

Several payments had been made to a private medical consulting company.

The company was registered to Dr. Harrison's business address.

I read the total.

$185,000.

“Where did that money come from?””

James looked at me.

“Your mother's estate.””

I felt sick.

“He stole from her?””

“I believe funds were moved without proper authorization. Your mother's original estate records will help establish exactly what happened.””

My father stood and walked toward the window.

“Elaine spent her whole life building that house. We never wanted to be rich. We just wanted something to leave our son.””

James nodded.

“And that's precisely why they chose the property.””

He then opened a separate folder.

It contained a copy of the emergency guardianship petition filed against my father.

James read through it carefully.

“There's a problem.””

“What?””

“The petition claims Robert has been diagnosed with advanced cognitive impairment.””

“He hasn't.””

“I know. But Harrison has signed a medical statement supporting that diagnosis.””

I showed him the email and the medical authorization bearing my forged signature.

James examined both.

Then he removed his glasses.

“Marcus, this is worse than I thought.””

“What?””

“The court filing includes an affidavit supposedly signed by you. It states that you personally witnessed your father threatening Vanessa and that you requested immediate guardianship.””

I shook my head.

“I never signed that.””

James tapped the paper.

“There's another issue. The petition asks the court to authorize an immediate medical evaluation and temporary removal of Robert from his home.””

My father looked horrified.

“They want to take me out of my own house?””

James nodded.

“If the judge accepts the petition without hearing your side, they could obtain temporary authority while the matter is reviewed.””

I looked at the clock.

It was almost midnight.

The hearing was scheduled for nine the following morning.

“We need to stop it.””

James picked up his phone.

“I'll file an emergency objection tonight.””

He began making calls.

While he worked, I examined the final pages of the petition.

One section listed the proposed guardian's financial responsibilities.

I recognized the name of the bank.

It was the same bank involved in the $950,000 loan application.

I showed James.

He read the section twice.

Then he looked at me.

“They've already prepared the financial arrangement.””

“What happens if the guardianship is granted?””

“The proposed guardian would have significant authority over Robert's affairs, subject to the court's order. That's why this hearing is so important.””

My phone vibrated.

A message from Vanessa.

*I know where you are. You need to come home before tomorrow.*

I stared at the screen.

Another message followed.

*Ask James Carter what happened to the last person who tried to expose Harrison.*

I showed James.

His expression changed.

He slowly lowered his phone.

“What?”” I asked.

James looked toward the closed office door.

“Six years ago, Patricia Miller disappeared for eleven days after she tried to report irregularities in your mother's medical records.””

My blood ran cold.

“Patricia? The woman I'm supposed to meet tomorrow?””

James nodded.

“She survived. But she never returned to the hospital.””

Then he looked directly at me.

“Marcus, I think Harrison knows we're working together.””

A loud knock struck the office door.

All three of us froze.

A man's voice came from the hallway.

“Mr. Carter? This is Atlanta Police. We need you to open the door.””

James looked through the glass panel.

May you like

Then he turned toward me.

“Whatever happens, don't give them the flash drive.””
