Chapter 10: The Witness Who Had Been Paid to Lie
I read the witness statement three times.
The document claimed that my father had physically assaulted Vanessa during a family gathering six months before our wedding.
There was only one problem.
Vanessa hadn't even met my father at that time.
I looked at Detective Collins.
“Who submitted this?””
He examined the electronic filing information.
“It was attached to the guardianship petition. The witness claims to have personally observed the incident.””
“Who is the witness?””
Collins turned the page.
“Michael Turner.””
My father suddenly stood.
“Michael?””
I looked at him.
“You know him?””
Dad nodded slowly.
“He was your mother's nephew. My sister's son.””
I felt a chill.
“Your cousin?””
“Yes. We haven't spoken in years.””
James Carter leaned forward.
“Why not?””
Dad looked embarrassed.
“Michael borrowed money from your mother shortly before she died. When she refused to give him more, he became angry. He accused her of favoring me.””
I examined the statement.
The signature looked authentic.
But the date was impossible.
“Can we contact him?”” I asked.
Detective Collins nodded.
“We'll locate him.””
James shook his head.
“Don't contact him directly. If he's involved with Harrison, he'll know we're investigating.””
My father sat down.
“Michael wouldn't do this.””
I wanted to believe him.
But I had learned that trusting the wrong person could destroy an entire family.
At 1:40 a.m., Detective Collins received an update.
His expression changed as he read the message.
“We found him.””
“Where?””
“An apartment in Marietta. He's currently staying with someone connected to Dr. Harrison.””
James stood.
“Who?””
Collins looked at us.
“Vanessa Williams.””
My stomach tightened.
My wife had disappeared less than two hours earlier.
Now she was living with the man who had supposedly witnessed my father's fictional assault.
“Can we speak to him?”” I asked.
“We'll request an interview.””
I shook my head.
“By then, they'll have time to invent another story.””
Collins studied me.
“Mr. Williams, you need to let us handle this.””
I understood.
But I couldn't sit still.
My father reached for my arm.
“Marcus, don't make another mistake because you're angry.””
His words stopped me.
I looked at him.
He was right.
For years, I had allowed my emotions to make decisions for me. First, I had believed Vanessa without questioning her. Now I wanted to rush into a confrontation without thinking.
I took a breath.
“Okay. We'll do it your way.””
James arranged for us to stay at his office while the detective contacted Michael.
At 2:15 a.m., my phone rang.
An unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A man spoke quietly.
“Marcus, it's Michael.””
I looked at Detective Collins.
He motioned for me to put the call on speaker.
“Where are you?””
“Somewhere safe. Listen, I need you to understand that I didn't want to get involved.””
“Your name is on a statement accusing my father of assault.””
“I know.””
“Why did you sign it?””
Michael sighed.
“Because Harrison paid me.””
My father closed his eyes.
“How much?”” I asked.
“Twenty thousand dollars.””
I stared at the phone.
“You sold your uncle for twenty thousand dollars?””
“I didn't know they were going to use it like this!””
“Then what did you think they wanted?””
Michael lowered his voice.
“They told me the statement would help establish a history of unstable behavior. They said Robert would be placed under supervision, and the house would eventually be sold.””
“Who told you?””
“Vanessa.””
I felt my jaw tighten.
“Why did she need your testimony from before she even met my father?””
There was a pause.
Then Michael said something unexpected.
“Because she already knew about the house.””
My father leaned closer.
“What do you mean?””
Michael continued.
“Your mother contacted me before she died. She told me someone was trying to get control of the property. She asked me to help her find out who.””
I stared at him.
“You knew?””
“I thought she was exaggerating. Then Harrison approached me after the funeral. He showed me documents suggesting your mother had transferred money to him voluntarily.””
“Did she?””
“I don't know. But he paid me to stay quiet.””
My father looked devastated.
“Your aunt trusted you.””
“I know, Uncle Robert.””
Michael's voice cracked.
“That's why I'm calling. I found something in Vanessa's apartment. A box containing original documents. One of them has your mother's signature.””
“Where is the box?””
“Under the bed in the spare room.””
Detective Collins immediately wrote down the address.
“Michael, are you still inside the apartment?””
“No. I'm outside.””
“Can you meet us?””
“I can.””
The detective gave him instructions to meet at a nearby police station.
Before ending the call, Michael spoke again.
“Marcus, there's something else. Vanessa has a second plan if the guardianship petition fails.””
“What plan?””
“She wants to have your father declared medically incapable before the hearing. Harrison arranged for a private evaluation at six this morning.””
I looked at the clock.
Less than four hours.
“Where?””
Michael gave us the name of a private medical facility.
Then the call ended.
Detective Collins immediately contacted the appropriate authorities.
James began preparing an emergency filing to prevent any unauthorized medical examination.
My father sat silently.
Finally, he spoke.
“Your mother was right about all of them.””
I sat beside him.
“Not all of them, Dad.””
He looked at me.
“James is still here. Michael is trying to help. And we're going to find out the truth.””
He nodded.
Then his phone rang.
The screen displayed an unfamiliar number.
He answered.
A woman's voice came through.
“Robert? This is Patricia Miller.””
Dad handed me the phone.
I nearly dropped it.
“Patricia? Where have you been?””
“I couldn't contact you safely. Listen carefully. I have your mother's original medication records.””
“Where are you?””
“I'm at a police station in Decatur. I've already spoken to an investigator.””
I exhaled.
“Are you safe?””
“For now.””
Then she added:
“Marcus, I need you to know something. The medication records show that your mother was given a drug she had specifically refused. And Dr. Harrison authorized the administration.””
I closed my eyes.
“Do you have proof?””
“Yes.””
She paused.
“And I found something even worse. The final medication order was entered using your father's medical authorization.””
I looked at Dad.
He shook his head.
“I never authorized medication for Elaine.””
Patricia's voice became urgent.
“I know. That's why you need to get the original document before Harrison destroys the remaining evidence.””
Then she said:
“Marcus, the person who changed your mother's records wasn't working alone.””
I swallowed.
“Who else was involved?””
May you like
Patricia answered with a name I never expected.
“Your father's former attorney.””
