Chapter 9: The Person Behind Everything
I read the sentence three times.
The person who caused the fire may not have been the person who planned it.
My hands went cold.
For ten years, I believed I knew what happened.
Lila made a reckless choice.
My parents covered it up.
That was the story.
But now another question appeared.
Who wanted the fire to happen?
Clara watched my face carefully.
“Your grandmother believed Lila was only one part of it.””
I looked at her.
“What does that mean?””
“She believed someone used Lila’s anger and insecurity.””
I closed my eyes.
Because I already knew who she meant.
My parents.
But which one?
That was the question.
When I returned to the mansion, everyone was waiting.
My father.
My mother.
Lila.
The moment I walked in, my father stood.
“Where were you?””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
His expression changed.
“I was concerned.””
I almost laughed.
“Concerned?””
My mother stepped forward.
“Nora, please.””
I placed the file on the table.
The room went quiet.
“What is this?””
My father didn’t answer.
He didn’t need to.
His reaction was enough.
I opened the file.
“Clara found records showing money transfers before the fire.””
My mother looked terrified.
“Don’t.””
I turned toward her.
“Why?””
Her lips trembled.
“Because you don’t know everything.””
I stared.
“Then tell me.””
She looked at my father.
And that told me everything.
I slowly shook my head.
“You’re still protecting him.””
My father slammed his hand on the table.
“Enough!””
I didn’t move.
For the first time, his anger didn’t scare me.
“You have spent ten years controlling this family with fear.””
His eyes narrowed.
“You think you’re powerful now?””
“No.””
I looked at the trust documents beside me.
“I think I finally stopped being powerless.””
Lila whispered:
“Dad…”
He turned toward her.
“Stay out of this.””
She froze.
And I noticed something.
The same fear.
The same reaction.
Lila wasn’t afraid of the truth.
She was afraid of him.
My mother began crying.
“Nora, there’s something you need to know.””
My father looked at her.
“Don’t.””
But she continued.
“I didn’t start the fire.””
Nobody spoke.
Then she looked directly at me.
“But I knew someone wanted it to happen.””
My heartbeat changed.
“Who?””
She closed her eyes.
“I don’t know.””
“You don’t know?””
“I only knew there was a plan.””
The room went silent.
I stepped closer.
“What plan?””
My mother looked at my father.
And he whispered one word.
“Evelyn.””
She looked terrified.
Not because she was exposed.
Because she was afraid of what came next.
Then the front door opened.
Everyone turned.
A man stood there.
Older.
Well-dressed.
Holding a briefcase.
My father’s face went pale.
Because he recognized him.
The stranger looked at me.
“Nora Bennett?””
“Yes.””
He stepped inside.
“I’m here because your grandmother asked me to deliver the final evidence.””
My father took a step back.
“No.””
The man opened the briefcase.
Inside was a sealed envelope.
“I believe this belongs to you.””
I took it.
On the front were four words:
*The Original Fire Report.*

Then the man looked at my father.
“And the truth about who ordered it.””
