Chapter 15: The Truth My Scars Carried

Victor Hale looked nothing like the monster I imagined.

That surprised me.

Monsters were easier when they looked evil.

He looked tired.

Broken.

Old.

We met in a quiet office with Daniel present.

Victor sat across from me.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then he said:

“I owe you the truth.””

I didn’t answer.

He looked at my scars.

“I have spent ten years knowing I was part of the reason you suffered.””

“Were you?””

He closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

The honesty shocked me.

He continued.

“Your father came to me because he was desperate.””

“For what?””

“Control.””

My hands tightened.

“He wanted your grandfather’s shares.””

Victor nodded.

“He knew the contract protected the company. He knew the evidence was stored in the pool house.””

The fire.

The evidence.

Everything.

“He hired you.””

“Yes.””

My stomach turned.

“But I never intended anyone to get hurt.””

I looked at him.

“Everyone says that.””

He accepted it.

“I know.””

Victor explained that he was supposed to retrieve documents and create confusion around the company investigation.

But Lila’s actions changed everything.

“The fire spread faster than expected.””

“And my father covered it up.””

Victor nodded.

“He saw an opportunity.””

I looked down.

The truth hurt.

But it was finally clean.

No more questions.

No more hidden pieces.

Daniel placed the final evidence on the table.

The legal case.

The financial records.

The original investigation.

Everything my grandmother had spent years collecting.

Months later, the world knew the truth.

My father faced charges.

The company survived.

The trust remained under my control.

But the biggest change wasn’t the company.

It was me.

For years, I believed my scars were the thing that ruined my life.

I was wrong.

The scars were proof that I survived a moment when everyone else failed me.

One year after the party, I returned to the pool.

Not for revenge.

Not for a public speech.

Just to stand there.

Lila came beside me.

She wore a simple dress.

No crown.

No performance.

“I still think about that night,” she said.

“So do I.””

“I wish I could change it.””

I looked at her.

“I wish I could too.””

She nodded.

“That’s the hardest part.””

“What?””

“Knowing sorry doesn’t erase what happened.””

I looked at the water.

“No.””

A quiet moment passed.

Then she said:

“But maybe it can be where we start.””

I didn’t forgive everything.

Not yet.

Some wounds take time.

But I finally understood something my grandmother knew.

Family isn’t about protecting a perfect image.

It’s about facing the truth, even when it hurts.

I touched the scars on my arm.

The same scars Lila tried to turn into a humiliation.

The same scars my parents tried to hide.

The same scars that told the world I survived.

That night at the birthday party, my sister thought she was exposing my greatest weakness.

She was wrong.

She revealed the strongest part of me.

Because the girl everyone tried to hide became the woman nobody could silence.

And when I finally stood in front of the world without covering my scars…

May you like

I realized I had never been the broken twin.

I had always been the one who survived.
