Chapter 14: The Daughter Who Returned

The next morning, I walked into Bennett Enterprises for the first time.

Not as Richard Bennett’s daughter.

Not as the girl people pitied.

As the person who legally controlled the future of the company.

The building looked exactly like the pictures.

Glass walls.

Marble floors.

People moving quickly.

Everyone knew my last name.

But nobody knew my story.

Until that day.

When I entered the boardroom, every executive stood.

My father had already called them.

I could see it on their faces.

Fear.

Confusion.

Curiosity.

The chairman’s seat was empty.

Waiting.

I sat down.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then one executive cleared his throat.

“Ms. Bennett, we were informed there would be a leadership discussion.””

I looked at him.

“There will be.””

I placed the trust documents on the table.

“Effective immediately, I am exercising my authority as controlling trustee.””

The room went silent.

A man near the window shook his head.

“Your father has always managed operations.””

I looked at him.

“And he will answer for his decisions.””

The door opened.

My father walked in.

He looked angry.

“You’re making a mistake.””

I didn’t move.

“No. I’m correcting one.””

Everyone watched.

He lowered his voice.

“You don’t know how this industry works.””

I remembered those words.

The same words he had used my entire life.

You don’t know.

You’re too young.

You’re too fragile.

But I wasn’t sixteen anymore.

“I know enough.””

He stepped closer.

“You’re destroying your family.””

I looked at him.

“No.””

I opened a folder.

“I’m stopping my family from destroying everyone else.””

Inside were financial records.

Evidence.

Everything Daniel and Clara had collected.

The executives began reading.

Their expressions changed.

My father saw it.

He knew.

The power he had built through fear was disappearing.

Then the police arrived.

The room froze.

My father looked at me.

“You called them?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

The officers approached him.

“Richard Bennett?””

“Yes?””

“We need you to come with us for questioning regarding financial fraud and evidence tampering.””

The room erupted.

My father stared at me.

For a second, I saw the man who carried me out of the hospital ten years ago.

The man I wanted to believe loved me.

Then I remembered the hospital room.

The lie.

The silence.

I looked away.

As he walked out, he stopped beside me.

“Nora.””

I didn’t answer.

“I am still your father.””

I looked at him.

“And I was still your daughter.””

His face fell.

Then he left.

That evening, I returned to the mansion.

Lila was sitting by the pool.

The same place where everything started.

She looked at my scars.

Then she looked away.

“I’m sorry.””

I sat beside her.

For the first time in years, we weren’t enemies.

But we weren’t healed either.

“I don’t know if I can forgive you.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“But I want to try.””

I looked at the water.

“You should have told the truth.””

“I know.””

“Why didn’t you?””

She whispered:

“Because Dad told me if I confessed, you would lose everything.””

I turned.

“What?””

She looked terrified.

“He said the family would collapse. He said everyone would hate me.””

My chest tightened.

He had controlled her too.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message from Daniel.

I opened it.

One sentence.

*We found Victor Hale.*

I stared.

Then another message arrived.

*He wants to speak to you before he turns himself in.*

I looked at Lila.

“The story isn’t over.””

She swallowed.

“Who is he?””

May you like

I looked toward the dark pool house.

“The man who knows why I really survived.””
