Chapter 7: The Woman at the Gate
Mrs. Hayes didn't look like someone who had just walked into the middle of a police investigation.
Her silver hair was perfect.
Her gray coat didn't have a wrinkle.
Even her shoes looked untouched by the wet pavement.
She glanced at the police cars, the firefighters, the frightened parents.
Then she sighed.
"This is becoming embarrassing.""
Mrs. Carter stepped in front of Noah.
"Embarrassing?""
Mrs. Hayes looked at her.
"I'm sorry. And you are?""
"Noah Carter's mother.""
For the first time, Mrs. Hayes's expression shifted.
Barely.
But I saw it.
Recognition.
"Oh.""
Mrs. Carter saw it too.
"You know exactly who my son is.""
"I know many students.""
"Noah says you visited his classroom.""
Mrs. Hayes looked toward him.
Noah moved closer to his mother.
"I visit classrooms regularly.""
"He heard you ask Ms. Parker if she'd gotten rid of him yet.""
Principal Whitmore inhaled sharply.
Mrs. Hayes gave a small laugh.
"A ten-year-old misunderstood an adult conversation.""
"I didn't misunderstand," Noah said.
Her eyes snapped toward him.
That look lasted only a second.
It was enough to make him step backward.
Mrs. Carter immediately moved between them.
"Don't look at my son like that.""
Mrs. Hayes lifted her eyebrows.
"Like what?""
"Like you're waiting for him to disappear.""
Detective Alvarez stepped forward.
"Mrs. Hayes, I'm Detective Alvarez. I'd like to ask you some questions.""
"I'm sure you would.""
"Did you access the school's security system today?""
"No.""
"Do you have principal-level credentials?""
"I'm board chair. Of course I do.""
"Did you delete two archived camera files?""
"No.""
"Do you know who did?""
"No.""
She answered too quickly.
Detective Alvarez noticed.
"So you won't mind if we examine your access history.""
Her smile vanished.
"I absolutely mind.""
Mrs. Carter laughed without humor.
"Funny how everybody here loves cameras until the cameras point at them.""
Mrs. Hayes ignored her.
She turned toward Principal Whitmore.
"David, we need to speak privately.""
"No.""
The word surprised everyone.
Principal Whitmore stood straighter.
"Anything you need to say about this investigation can be said in front of Detective Alvarez.""
Mrs. Hayes stared at him.
"Remember who appointed you.""
"And I'm beginning to remember why that was a mistake.""
Her face hardened.
"You should choose your next words carefully.""
"So should you.""
For the first time, I saw something like fear behind her eyes.
Then her phone buzzed.
She glanced down.
Detective Alvarez watched her.
"Where is your son?""
"My son is an adult.""
"That's not what I asked.""
"I don't keep track of him.""
"He abandoned his vehicle at the airport and left a hospital while police were looking for him.""
"Then perhaps you should ask him.""
"We would if we could find him.""
Mrs. Hayes slipped her phone into her pocket.
"I can't help you.""
A voice behind us said, "Maybe I can.""
We turned.
Sophie stood beside her mother.
Her face was pale, but she pointed at Mrs. Hayes.
"She was there too.""
Mrs. Hayes froze.
Sophie's mother crouched beside her.
"Where, honey?""
"The day Ms. Parker hurt my ear.""
Mrs. Hayes shook her head.
"That's absurd.""
Sophie flinched.
Her mother stood.
"Don't call my daughter a liar.""
"I didn't.""
"You just did.""
Detective Alvarez raised a hand.
"Sophie, don't answer anything unless you feel comfortable.""
Sophie nodded.
"Where was Mrs. Hayes?""
"Outside the classroom.""
"Did she come inside?""
"After.""
"After what?""
Sophie touched her ear.
"After Ms. Parker pulled me.""
Mrs. Hayes stepped forward.
"This is ridiculous.""
Detective Alvarez blocked her.
"Let the child speak.""
Sophie looked at him.
"Ms. Parker told me to stop crying because Mrs. Hayes was coming.""
"What happened when she arrived?""
"She asked if I'd learned my lesson.""
Mrs. Hayes's face went blank.
Sophie continued.
"Then she gave Ms. Parker an envelope.""
"What kind of envelope?""
"White.""
"Did you hear them talking?""
Sophie nodded.
"What did they say?""
Sophie squeezed her mother's hand.
"Mrs. Hayes said, 'We can't keep wasting money on families who don't belong here.''"
The courtyard went silent.
Mrs. Carter stared at her.
"Families like whose?""
Mrs. Hayes looked toward the gate.
Detective Alvarez noticed.
"Don't leave.""
"I have nothing else to say.""
"Then staying shouldn't be difficult.""
A police officer moved closer to the gate.
Mrs. Hayes stopped.
Principal Whitmore looked like he might be sick.
"Elizabeth, tell me she misunderstood.""
Mrs. Hayes said nothing.
"Tell me.""
She finally looked at him.
"You've always been too sentimental about admissions.""
Principal Whitmore stared.
"What does that mean?""
"It means schools like this survive because families with resources support them.""
"And?""
"And every full scholarship is a seat someone else pays for.""
Noah's mother stepped forward.
"My son earned that seat.""
Mrs. Hayes looked at Noah.
"Your son tested well.""
"Better than your granddaughter.""
That landed.
Mrs. Hayes's jaw tightened.
Mrs. Carter saw it.
"There it is.""
"There what is?""
"The reason.""
Mrs. Hayes scoffed.
"Madeline has nothing to do with this.""
Mr. Daniels spoke from behind his laptop.
"Actually...""
Everyone turned.
He had been searching while they argued.
"I found something.""
Detective Alvarez walked over.
"What?""
"The Hamilton Grant nomination portal.""
Principal Whitmore frowned.
"Nominations aren't due until next month.""
"Someone submitted one early.""
"For whom?""
Mr. Daniels looked at Mrs. Hayes.
"Madeline.""
Principal Whitmore's face darkened.
"Who submitted it?""
Mr. Daniels turned the screen.
"Your account.""
"I didn't.""
"I know.""
"How?""
"Because the submission happened January ninth at 11:48 p.m.""
Principal Whitmore stared.
"I was in Chicago.""
Mrs. Hayes said, "This proves nothing.""
Mr. Daniels clicked another field.
"It includes an attachment.""
"What attachment?"" Detective Alvarez asked.
"A disciplinary notice explaining why the previously top-ranked student was no longer eligible.""
Mrs. Carter's face went still.
"Noah.""
Mr. Daniels nodded.
The fake letter.
The fake signature.
The scholarship review.
All of it had already been used.
Detective Alvarez looked at Mrs. Hayes.
"Who uploaded the document?""
Mr. Daniels checked.
Then he frowned.
"That's strange.""
"What?""
"The file wasn't uploaded from the school.""
"Where?""
Mr. Daniels enlarged the login data.
The silence lasted several seconds.
Then Principal Whitmore whispered, "Elizabeth.""
Detective Alvarez looked at him.
"You recognize it?""
Principal Whitmore nodded.
"That IP address.""
Mrs. Hayes reached for her phone.
The officer near the gate stepped closer.
May you like
Principal Whitmore stared directly at her.
"It's registered to your house.""
