Chapter 3: What the Camera Missed
Sophie's mother arrived before the police did.
The moment Sophie saw her, she ran across the library.
"Mom!""
Her mother caught her.
"What's wrong?""
Sophie buried her face against her coat.
Mrs. Ellis quietly explained what had happened.
Then she mentioned Sophie's name.
Her mother's expression changed.
"Sophie?""
Sophie wouldn't look up.
Her mother crouched.
"Honey, did Ms. Parker hurt you?""
Silence.
"Sophie.""
The little girl finally nodded.
Her mother closed her eyes.
"When?""
"December.""
"What did she do?""
Sophie looked toward Principal Whitmore.
That made everyone notice him.
He seemed to notice too.
"Why are you looking at me?"" he asked gently.
"Because she said you knew.""
His face drained of color.
"I knew what?""
Sophie wiped her nose.
"That I was bad.""
Principal Whitmore crouched several feet away.
"Sophie, I promise you, I did not know Ms. Parker hurt you.""
"She said you did.""
"What exactly did she say?""
Sophie hesitated.
"She said if I told my mom, you'd kick me out.""
Her mother stood so quickly her purse fell.
"What?""
Sophie started sobbing again.
"She said nobody would believe me because she's the teacher.""
Her mother's hands shook.
"What did she do to you?""
Sophie pointed toward her ear.
"She pulled it.""
Her mother stared.
"That's why it was swollen?""
Sophie nodded.
"You told me you fell during recess.""
"She told me to say that.""
The room erupted.
Parents demanded answers.
Kids started talking over one another.
Mrs. Ellis tried calming everyone.
Then two police officers entered.
Everything became very serious, very quickly.
One officer spoke with Principal Whitmore while the other approached Mrs. Carter and Noah.
Soon, parents and children were separated for interviews.
Mom and I sat in a small conference room beside the library.
A detective named Alvarez joined us.
He placed a recorder on the table.
"Emma, you're not in trouble.""
I nodded.
"Your mom can stay right here.""
Mom squeezed my hand.
Detective Alvarez leaned forward.
"Tell me what happened from the beginning.""
So I did.
The missing bracelet.
Noah walking to the front.
The camera switch.
The ruler.
Every word Ms. Parker said.
When I repeated, "Maybe this will teach you your place," Detective Alvarez stopped writing.
"Those exact words?""
"Yes.""
"You're sure?""
"I'll never forget them.""
Mom squeezed my hand tighter.
"And then?""
"I turned the camera on.""
"Did Ms. Parker see you?""
"No.""
"Why did you do it?""
I thought about that.
"Because she turned it off before hurting him.""
Detective Alvarez nodded.
"You understood that mattered.""
"Yes.""
"Did she ever turn it off before?""
"I remember seeing the green light off sometimes.""
"How often?""
"I don't know.""
"Once? Five times? Twenty?""
I swallowed.
"Maybe a lot.""
His pen stopped.
Mom looked at me.
"What do you mean, Emma?""
"Sometimes Ms. Parker would tell someone to stay after class.""
I stared at the table.
"And she'd look at the camera first.""
Detective Alvarez sat back.
"Did you ever see what happened afterward?""
"No.""
"Did you hear anything?""
I remembered something.
A sound.
Not a ruler.
Crying.
"Once.""
Mom went still.
"Who?""
"Ben.""
The detective wrote his name.
After the interview, Mom and I returned to the hallway.
The school felt different now.
Parents were everywhere.
Police officers moved between classrooms.
An administrator stood beside Ms. Parker's door.
And Ms. Parker herself was nowhere to be seen.
Then a man carrying a laptop hurried toward Principal Whitmore.
"Sir.""
Principal Whitmore looked exhausted.
"What did you find?""
The man glanced at the parents around him.
"We should discuss this privately.""
Mrs. Carter stepped forward.
"No.""
He looked at her.
"My son is involved. Say it.""
Principal Whitmore rubbed his forehead.
"Mr. Daniels?""
The IT administrator swallowed.
"I pulled the camera logs.""
Everyone went quiet.
"How many shutdowns?"" Mrs. Carter asked.
He looked at the laptop.
"Since August?""
"Yes.""
"Thirty-seven.""
Someone gasped.
My mother's hand tightened around mine.
Thirty-seven.
There hadn't been thirty-seven privacy emergencies.
Everyone knew it.
Mrs. Carter's voice became very quiet.
"How long were they off?""
"It varies.""
"How long?""
"Usually five to fifteen minutes.""
"And today?""
"Four minutes, seventeen seconds.""
She nodded toward Noah.
"Four minutes was enough.""
Principal Whitmore closed his eyes.
But Mr. Daniels wasn't finished.
"There's another issue.""
"What?"" Principal Whitmore asked.
"The system automatically saves thirty seconds of buffered video before every manual shutdown.""
I didn't understand.
Neither did several parents.
Mrs. Carter did.
"You have footage from before she switched it off?""
"Thirty seconds.""
"From all thirty-seven times?""
Mr. Daniels hesitated.
"Yes.""
The hallway became completely silent.
Principal Whitmore stared at the laptop.
"Show me.""
They moved into the conference room.
The door closed.
Parents immediately started demanding to see it too.
Police entered the room a minute later.
Then five minutes passed.
Ten.
Fifteen.
Nobody came out.
Finally, Detective Alvarez opened the door.
His face was different now.
Whatever he'd seen had changed the entire investigation.
He walked directly toward another officer.
"We need to locate Parker immediately.""
Mrs. Carter stepped forward.
"Why?""
The detective hesitated.
Then Noah spoke.
"She's still here.""
Everyone looked at him.
Mrs. Carter crouched.
"What?""
Noah pointed toward the staircase at the end of the hall.
"I saw her go upstairs when they took me to the nurse.""
Principal Whitmore frowned.
"Upstairs?""
Noah nodded.
"She had a box.""
"What kind of box?""
"A cardboard one.""
"What was inside?""
Noah swallowed.
"Folders.""
Mr. Daniels suddenly pushed past Principal Whitmore.
"Her student files.""
The detective's expression sharpened.
"What's upstairs?""
Principal Whitmore stared toward the staircase.
"Records. Faculty storage. The server room.""
The detective started moving.
Then an alarm screamed through the building.
Everyone jumped.
A red light began flashing above the hallway doors.
An administrator shouted from the far end of the corridor.
"Smoke!""
Principal Whitmore ran toward him.
"Where?""
The man pointed upstairs.
May you like
And then he yelled the words that made every parent in that hallway turn white.
"The records room is on fire.""
