Chapter 11: The Principal's Secret

Principal Whitmore arrived at the police station voluntarily.

By lunchtime, every parent seemed to know.

Rumors spread faster than facts.

Some people said he had stolen scholarship money.

Others said he had helped Mrs. Hayes.

Mom refused to repeat any of it.

"We wait for evidence," she told me.

But I could tell she was scared.

Mrs. Carter called around noon.

"They questioned Whitmore.""

"What happened?"" Mom asked.

"I don't know. Noah keeps asking if he's going to lose his scholarship.""

"He won't.""

"That's what I keep telling him.""

Then Noah came onto the phone.

"Emma?""

"Hey.""

"Are you okay?""

"Yeah.""

"You sound weird.""

"So do you.""

He laughed a little.

It was the first normal sound I'd heard from him since Ms. Parker hit him.

Then he became serious.

"Did you hear about Dr. Whitmore?""

"Yes.""

"My mom says we shouldn't decide he's guilty before we know.""

"My mom said the same thing.""

"Parents say annoying things.""

I smiled.

"Sometimes they're right.""

"Don't tell them.""

For a few seconds, we were just fifth graders again.

Then Noah whispered, "Emma?""

"Yeah?""

"Why did they hate scholarship kids?""

I didn't know how to answer.

"Maybe they didn't hate you.""

"It felt like it.""

I stared at my hands.

"Maybe they hated what you proved.""

"What?""

"That you deserved to be there without needing them to let you.""

Noah was quiet.

Then he said, "Madeline deserves to be there too.""

"I know.""

"I don't want her punished.""

"She won't be.""

I hoped I was right.

That afternoon, Detective Alvarez came back to our house.

This time Mrs. Carter and Noah came too.

He wanted to explain something to both families.

"The transfer connected to Principal Whitmore wasn't what it first appeared to be.""

Mom folded her arms.

"What was it?""

"Money moved from a scholarship reserve into an emergency operating account.""

Mrs. Carter frowned.

"Was that allowed?""

"Not without board approval.""

"So he did take it?""

"He moved it.""

"Why?""

Alvarez opened a folder.

"Last spring, the school was facing a cash shortage.""

"How bad?""

"Bad enough that payroll might have been delayed.""

Mom looked surprised.

"This school charges more tuition than some colleges.""

"Yes.""

"How does it run out of money?""

"That's the better question.""

Alvarez placed several pages on the table.

"Whitmore discovered payments to consulting companies approved by Mrs. Hayes.""

"Real companies?""

"Some.""

"And the others?""

"Shell entities.""

Mrs. Carter stared.

"She was stealing?""

"We're still investigating.""

"How much?""

"Over several years, potentially more than a million dollars.""

Noah's eyes widened.

Even at ten, we knew that was enormous.

Mom asked, "Where does Whitmore fit?""

"He moved scholarship reserve funds temporarily to keep the school operating while he investigated.""

"Then why hide it?""

"Because Mrs. Hayes discovered what he'd done.""

Mrs. Carter understood.

"She had something against him.""

Alvarez nodded.

"Moving restricted scholarship funds without authorization could have cost him his job and possibly created legal problems.""

"So she threatened him.""

"According to Whitmore, yes.""

Mom frowned.

"Then why didn't he go to police?""

"Fear. Career. Reputation. He says he convinced himself he could collect enough proof first.""

Mrs. Carter's voice hardened.

"And while he was protecting his career, children were being hurt.""

Alvarez didn't defend him.

"Noah was hurt because adults kept secrets too long.""

Nobody argued with that.

Then he pulled out another document.

"We also know why Mrs. Hayes wanted scholarship numbers reduced.""

I remembered her words.

Every full scholarship is a seat someone else pays for.

"Money?"" I asked.

Alvarez nodded.

"Scholarship accounts received donations every year. If fewer students received aid, the unused funds should have remained restricted.""

"But they didn't," Mom said.

"No.""

Mrs. Carter leaned forward.

"Where did they go?""

"Some were rerouted into consulting payments.""

Her face went cold.

"So removing children from scholarships created money she could steal.""

"That's one possibility investigators are examining.""

"And Madeline?""

"The Hamilton Grant appears separate. That looks personal.""

Noah stared at the table.

"So they wanted my scholarship money and my Hamilton nomination?""

Alvarez looked at him.

"That's what the evidence suggests.""

Noah shook his head.

"That's greedy.""

The adults looked at each other.

It was such a simple word.

And somehow it explained more than everything else.

Greedy.

Alvarez gathered the documents.

"There's one more development.""

Mrs. Carter sighed.

"Of course there is.""

"We interviewed Parker.""

Noah immediately stiffened.

His mother put an arm around him.

"What did she say?""

"For hours, almost nothing.""

"And now?""

"She wants to cooperate.""

Mrs. Carter's expression sharpened.

"Why?""

"Because she learned what was found in locker 214.""

Mom asked, "What does she know?""

"She claims Mrs. Hayes kept a second set of records.""

"Where?""

"She doesn't know.""

"But?""

Alvarez hesitated.

"Parker says those records contain the names of every student targeted over the last six years.""

Six years.

Noah wasn't the first.

Sophie wasn't the first.

There could be dozens.

"Why would Mrs. Hayes keep evidence?"" Mom asked.

"Leverage.""

"Against whom?""

"Everyone.""

Mrs. Carter stood.

"Then find it.""

"We're trying.""

Detective Alvarez looked toward me.

"Parker gave us one clue.""

I swallowed.

"What?""

"She said Mrs. Hayes never trusted computers with her most dangerous records.""

"So they're on paper?""

"Apparently.""

"Where?""

Alvarez opened his notebook.

"Parker says Mrs. Hayes once told Hayes, 'If this school ever turns on us, the truth is already inside its walls.''"

Noah looked confused.

"Inside the walls?""

Before anyone could answer, my phone buzzed.

It was Madeline.

A message.

*Emma, I remembered something.*

Then another.

*Grandma made Dad hide envelopes at school.*

May you like

And then:

*I think I know where.*
