Chapter 14: The Document That Exposed Them All

Rachel refused to let me return to the house alone.

We contacted Michael Grant, who had already been reviewing the suspicious estate transfers.

He accompanied us.

When we arrived, Vanessa's car was parked outside.

The upstairs lights were on.

I could see movement behind the curtains.

Rachel rang the doorbell.

Nobody answered.

Michael knocked again.

"Mrs. Carter, we're here regarding the preservation of documents relevant to the pending court proceedings.""

A moment later, the door opened.

Vanessa stood in the hallway.

Her expression hardened when she saw me.

"What do you want?""

"Where's Brianna?"" I asked.

"She's upstairs.""

"Where are the documents?""

Vanessa smiled.

"What documents?""

Rachel stepped forward.

"We have received information that potentially relevant estate records are being destroyed. We are requesting that all original documents be preserved.""

Vanessa laughed.

"You can't come into my house and make demands.""

Michael showed her the court-issued preservation notice.

Her smile disappeared.

"We're not here to search without authorization," he explained.

"We're here to ensure that evidence covered by the order isn't destroyed.""

Vanessa stepped aside reluctantly.

I climbed the stairs.

Brianna was standing outside the upstairs office.

Her face was pale.

"Emily.""

"What happened?""

"Mom burned some papers.""

I looked toward the office.

A metallic wastebasket sat beside the desk.

Several charred fragments remained inside.

Rachel immediately called Michael.

He photographed the scene and secured the remaining materials.

Vanessa appeared behind us.

"This is ridiculous. Those were personal papers.""

Brianna stepped forward.

"No, Mom. They were the documents Dad told you to hide.""

Vanessa turned sharply.

"Be quiet.""

"I'm done lying for you.""

I looked at my stepsister.

"What did you find?""

Brianna opened the office desk.

She removed a small envelope from beneath a drawer lining.

"I took this before Mom came upstairs.""

Inside was an original letter.

It was dated seven years earlier.

The handwriting belonged to my father.

I unfolded it.

Vanessa,

Daniel has confirmed the DNA results. Margaret wants to make the relationship public, but I refuse to let Emily become part of another man's family.

I have agreed to continue raising her as my daughter. However, I will not allow Daniel to control the estate or the business.

If Margaret insists on removing me as executor, we will need to act before the amendment is registered.

I read it twice.

Then I looked at Vanessa.

"You knew.""

She didn't respond.

The letter continued.

The trust transfer must be completed before Emily turns eighteen. Brianna will receive the studio assets, and we will recover the money once the accounts are consolidated.

Daniel must never discover what happened to the original documents.

I lowered the page.

Rachel took it.

"This is important. We'll preserve the original.""

Vanessa suddenly lunged toward Brianna.

"Give me that envelope!""

Michael stepped between them.

"Mrs. Carter, stop.""

Vanessa's face was red.

"You have no idea what you're doing!""

Brianna began crying.

"You told me Emily didn't deserve the money. You told me Mom had promised everything to us.""

Vanessa pointed at her.

"Because she did!""

"Then why did you need fake signatures?""

Vanessa fell silent.

I looked at her.

"Why did you steal my mother's work?""

She turned toward me.

"Because you were going to waste it.""

I stared.

"What?""

"Your mother had a business worth millions. She had designs, patents, commercial relationships. And you were a child playing with fabric scraps.""

Rachel stepped forward.

"Mrs. Carter, I suggest you stop speaking.""

But Vanessa continued.

"Robert and I spent years trying to rebuild what Margaret left behind. We had debts. We had responsibilities. You were living in our house, eating our food, going to school with everything paid for.""

I felt my voice shake.

"With my own mother's money.""

Vanessa's expression twisted.

"Your mother was dead. The money was doing nothing sitting in an account.""

"It was mine.""

"You didn't even know it existed!""

"That doesn't make it yours!""

For the first time, Vanessa had no answer.

Brianna wiped her cheeks.

"Mom, you told me Emily had signed the dress over.""

Vanessa turned away.

"That was different.""

"Was it?""

Brianna held up her phone.

"I recorded you last night.""

Vanessa froze.

Rachel looked at her.

"What did you record?""

Brianna pressed play.

Vanessa's voice filled the office.

The original signature was easy to copy. Emily always signed the same way. Robert had the old school forms, and I used one of them as a reference.

Then my father's voice.

What about the notary?

Vanessa answered:

I used the old certificate. Nobody checks retired commissions unless someone makes a formal complaint.

The recording continued.

Once the competition releases the scholarship, we can claim the design rights were transferred legally. The trust issue will be handled separately.

Then came the sentence that made me feel physically sick.

If Emily keeps pushing, we'll tell everyone Daniel manipulated her. People will believe a girl who's confused about her family doesn't know what she's signing.

Rachel immediately requested a copy of the original recording.

Vanessa looked at Brianna as if she'd never seen her before.

"You recorded me?""

Brianna nodded.

"Yes.""

"You ungrateful little—"

"Don't," Brianna interrupted.

Her voice was shaking, but she didn't back away.

"I wore Emily's dress because you told me it was mine. I took her opportunity because you told me she didn't deserve it. And I let you use Grandma's memories to make me look talented.""

She swallowed.

"But I'm not doing it anymore.""

Vanessa stared at her daughter.

Then she looked at me.

"You think you've won?""

Rachel answered before I could.

"No. But the evidence is becoming very difficult to explain.""

Michael secured the letter and the recording.

The following morning, Rachel submitted an emergency evidence package to the court.

It included:

- The original trust amendment. - The forged design transfer agreement. - The retired notary's commission records. - The hospital admission documents.

- The original blue ledger. - The recording from the storage vault. - The letter proving Robert knew about Daniel's paternity. - Brianna's recording of the conversation about the forged signature.

Judge Whitmore scheduled an expedited hearing.

Two days later, we returned to the courtroom.

My father sat beside Vanessa.

Brianna sat behind Rachel.

Daniel was present with his attorney.

Judge Whitmore examined the new evidence for nearly twenty minutes.

Then she looked at Vanessa.

"Mrs. Carter, did you create the document transferring Emily Carter's design rights?""

Vanessa's attorney stood.

"My client declines to answer on the basis that the matter may involve separate legal proceedings.""

The judge nodded.

Then she turned toward my father.

"Mr. Carter, did you know that Daniel Reeves was Emily's biological father before Margaret's death?""

Dad looked at Daniel.

Then at me.

"Yes.""

The courtroom erupted in whispers.

Judge Whitmore raised her hand.

"Silence.""

She examined another page.

"And did you know that Margaret had appointed Mr. Reeves as independent executor?""

Dad's voice was barely audible.

"Yes.""

The judge placed the document on her desk.

"Then why did you submit a competing estate amendment bearing a disputed signature?""

Dad stared at the floor.

Rachel stood.

"Your Honor, we have a witness who can establish the original amendment's validity.""

The courtroom doors opened.

An elderly woman entered.

She was carrying a small leather folder.

I recognized her from my mother's old photographs.

It was Margaret's former business partner, Helen Brooks.

She approached the witness stand.

Judge Whitmore asked her to identify herself.

Helen raised her right hand.

Then she looked directly at my father.

"Your Honor, I was present when Margaret signed her final estate amendment.""

She opened her folder.

"And I brought the original witness record.""

Dad's face went completely white.

But Helen wasn't finished.

She removed another document.

"There's also something Margaret asked me to preserve. Something Robert believed had been destroyed.""

She handed it to the clerk.

Judge Whitmore examined the first page.

May you like

Then she slowly looked toward my father.

"Mr. Carter, I believe we are finally going to understand where the missing $640,000 went.""
