Chapter 13: The Man Who Was Never Allowed to Be My Father

For several seconds, I couldn't move.

The photograph on my phone showed my mother holding a newborn baby.

Daniel Reeves stood beside her, one hand resting gently on her shoulder.

On the back, in my mother's handwriting, were six words:

The truth must never reach Robert.

I looked at Rachel.

"Tell me this isn't true.""

She didn't answer immediately.

Dr. Whitaker had already left the conference room, promising to provide the original medical records through the proper legal channels.

Rachel took my phone and examined the photograph.

"Emily, we need to verify this before drawing conclusions.""

"But Dad just said Daniel is my biological father.""

"Your father could be telling the truth. He could also be trying to manipulate you.""

I stood up.

"I need to speak to Daniel.""

Rachel agreed to accompany me.

We found him at his office.

He was reviewing the competition's legal correspondence when we entered.

His face brightened.

"Emily. Rachel. Is everything all right?""

I placed the photograph on his desk.

His expression changed immediately.

He slowly removed his glasses.

"Where did you get this?""

"Brianna found it.""

Daniel studied the photograph.

Then he closed his eyes.

"Your mother wanted you to have this conversation eventually.""

I felt my throat tighten.

"Are you my biological father?""

He didn't answer.

I stepped closer.

"Please don't lie to me.""

Daniel looked directly at me.

"Yes.""

The room seemed to disappear.

I gripped the back of a chair.

"How long have you known?""

"Since before you were born.""

"Did my mother tell you?""

"Yes.""

"Did my father know?""

Daniel looked down.

"Robert suspected. But your mother never wanted him to use that information against you.""

I felt tears gathering.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because Margaret asked me not to.""

"She died seven years ago!""

"I know.""

"Then why did you keep pretending?""

His voice cracked.

"Because I promised her.""

I turned away.

Rachel remained silent.

Daniel opened a drawer and removed another photograph.

It showed my mother and Daniel sitting together in front of the original sewing studio.

They were laughing.

On the back was another note.

Daniel and Margaret, building something beautiful.

I looked at him.

"Were you in love with her?""

He nodded.

"Before she married Robert.""

I felt my stomach twist.

"Then why did she marry Dad?""

Daniel took a breath.

"Because Robert was already part of her life. He was charming, ambitious, and convinced her that he could build a stable family. I had just started my career and wasn't ready to offer her the future she wanted.""

"And then?""

"Years later, Margaret discovered that Robert had been using money from her business. She contacted me because she needed legal advice. We began speaking again.""

He paused.

"By then, she was pregnant.""

I sat down.

"With me.""

"Yes.""

"Did you know before I was born?""

"Your mother told me.""

"Did you want to raise me?""

Daniel's eyes filled.

"Every single day.""

I looked away.

He continued.

"Margaret made it clear that she wanted you to grow up believing you had a father who loved you. She didn't want you caught between adults fighting over money and old mistakes.""

"Was Robert my father legally?""

"He raised you. He was listed on your birth certificate. He had parental responsibilities. I never tried to change that.""

"Did he know?""

Daniel hesitated.

"Your mother told him shortly before her final hospitalization. She wanted to end the marriage and establish a clear legal arrangement for your future.""

My chest tightened.

"That's why he was angry.""

Daniel nodded.

"Robert believed that losing control of your mother's estate meant losing control of the family.""

I stared at the photograph.

"Did he ever love me?""

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

Then he said, "I believe he loved the idea of being your father. But when he discovered the truth, he began treating you like a reminder of something he couldn't control.""

The words hurt.

But they also explained so much.

The distance.

The criticism.

The way he'd always favored Brianna.

I remembered standing in the kitchen, begging him to defend me after Vanessa stole my dress.

He'd looked at the floor.

I had spent years wondering what I'd done wrong.

Now I understood that the problem had existed before I was old enough to remember anything.

Daniel opened another folder.

"There's something else Margaret arranged.""

He handed Rachel a document.

It was a DNA test report prepared before my birth.

The results confirmed Daniel's biological relationship to me.

Rachel examined the authentication details.

"This will need independent verification, but the report appears legitimate.""

I looked at Daniel.

"Why did my mother keep this hidden?""

"Because she was afraid Robert would use it to challenge your inheritance.""

"Was he entitled to?""

"Not to take away what Margaret specifically left you. But he could have used the dispute to delay everything for years.""

I stood.

"I want the truth in court.""

Daniel nodded.

"You deserve that.""

Just then, Rachel's phone rang.

She answered and listened.

Her expression changed.

"What do you mean the court has received another filing?""

She listened again.

Then she ended the call.

"Emily, your father has filed an emergency petition.""

"About what?""

Rachel looked at the documents Daniel had given us.

"He's claiming that Margaret's final estate amendment was invalid because she was allegedly under medical influence when she signed it.""

I felt my stomach drop.

"But we have witnesses.""

"Yes. And we have the original documents. But there's another problem.""

"What?""

Rachel turned her laptop toward me.

A new legal filing had been submitted that morning.

It requested that Daniel Reeves be removed from his position as trustee and executor because of an alleged undisclosed conflict of interest.

The attached statement was signed by Vanessa.

She claimed Daniel had concealed his biological relationship to me to gain control of my inheritance.

I stared at the screen.

They were turning the truth into an accusation.

Daniel looked devastated.

"Margaret knew this could happen.""

Rachel closed the laptop.

"Then we'll prove the relationship was never used to take control of Emily's money.""

My phone buzzed.

A message from Brianna appeared.

Mom knows you found out about Daniel. She's destroying the documents in the upstairs office.

I immediately stood.

"What?""

Another message arrived.

There's one original document left. The one that proves Dad knew Daniel was your father before you were born.

I looked at Rachel.

"Where is it?""

Brianna sent an address.

Our family home.

May you like

Then came one final message.

Emily, please hurry. Mom has already called someone to take it away.
