Chapter 3: What Mia Knew
For several seconds, the noise around me disappeared.
Hundreds of students moved through the hallway, but I heard only Mia's words.
"Mom told me to.""
I stared at her.
"That's not funny.""
"I'm not joking.""
"Why would Vanessa tell you to destroy my graduation dress?""
Mia glanced over my shoulder.
Dad was talking to one of my teachers.
Vanessa stood near the auditorium entrance.
She was watching us.
The moment our eyes met, she started walking toward us.
Mia immediately stepped back.
"Forget it.""
I caught her wrist.
"No.""
"Ava—"
"You just told me Vanessa ordered you to destroy my dress.""
"I shouldn't have said anything.""
"Then why did you?""
Her eyes flickered.
"Because Dad took my bag.""
I almost laughed.
"Of course.""
"No, listen.""
Mia lowered her voice.
"I was angry at you. I wanted to ruin your day. But Mom gave me the scissors.""
My stomach dropped.
"What?""
"Last night.""
Before she could say more, Vanessa reached us.
"There you are.""
Her smile looked painfully artificial.
"We're about to start.""
I looked directly at her.
"Mia says you gave her the scissors.""
Mia went white.
Vanessa didn't.
That scared me more.
She simply tilted her head.
"Excuse me?""
"The scissors used on my dress.""
Vanessa slowly turned toward Mia.
"Mia, what exactly have you been telling her?""
"Nothing.""
"Mia.""
"I said nothing!""
Vanessa stepped closer.
"You seem emotional.""
That was directed at me.
"I think today has been overwhelming for everyone.""
"Did you give her the scissors?""
"Ava, this is neither the time nor place.""
"That's not an answer.""
Vanessa's smile disappeared.
"Go graduate.""
Then she walked away.
I stood frozen.
Mia whispered, "See?""
"See what?""
"She does that.""
"Does what?""
"Makes you feel crazy for asking the question.""
Before I could answer, a teacher called our names.
"Ava Bennett! Mia Carter! Line up!""
Mia moved away.
I followed.
But my mind wasn't on graduation anymore.
It was on Vanessa.
Why?
What could she possibly gain by humiliating me?
The ceremony began.
Music filled the auditorium.
Families cheered.
When my name was called, I stepped onto the stage.
"Ava Bennett.""
I heard Dad immediately.
"THAT'S MY GIRL!""
People laughed warmly.
I smiled despite everything.
For one beautiful second, the day belonged to me again.
I accepted my diploma.
Then I looked into the audience.
Dad was standing.
Clapping.
Beside him, Vanessa remained seated.
Her hands were folded in her lap.
Her expression was cold.
And suddenly I knew.
This wasn't about a dress.
It was about Dad.
After the ceremony, families flooded the courtyard.
Dad hugged me so tightly my cap nearly fell off.
"I'm proud of you.""
"Thanks, Dad.""
He looked at the altered dress.
"Elena really did save us.""
"No.""
I smiled faintly.
"You did.""
His expression softened.
Then Vanessa approached.
"Family picture.""
She positioned Mia beside Dad.
Then herself.
I stepped forward.
Vanessa raised a hand.
"Maybe we should get one with Mia first.""
Dad frowned.
"Why?""
"She's my daughter.""
"And Ava's mine.""
Vanessa's face tightened.
"I meant because Mia's grandparents want a picture.""
"We can take several.""
Dad motioned me closer.
"Come here, kiddo.""
I stood beside him.
Vanessa smiled for the camera.
But when Dad turned away, she whispered through her teeth.
"You couldn't let her have one thing?""
I stared at her.
"What?""
Her smile remained fixed.
"Nothing.""
The camera clicked.
I waited until Dad walked toward my grandmother.
Then I followed Vanessa behind the auditorium.
"Mia told me everything.""
She stopped.
Slowly turned.
"No, she didn't.""
The certainty in her voice chilled me.
"You told her to ruin my dress.""
Vanessa folded her arms.
"Prove it.""
There it was.
No denial.
Just a challenge.
"Why?""
"You really want to do this today?""
"Yes.""
She stepped closer.
"Because Mia has spent five years watching your father treat you like you're made of glass.""
"My mother died.""
"And there it is.""
Her voice sharpened.
"The excuse that wins every argument.""
I recoiled.
Vanessa continued.
"Mia gets a birthday dinner, you have a bad memory and suddenly everyone comforts Ava. Mia gets into college, Richard asks whether you're okay with her moving away. Mia gets a graduation gift, he spends the morning talking about how hard you've worked.""
"I never asked him to do that.""
"No. You don't have to.""
Her words landed like slaps.
"You walk into a room, and he remembers the wife he lost.""
I stared at her.
"My mother?""
Vanessa's face changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
"You think this is about Mia?""
I whispered.
Vanessa looked toward the courtyard.
"Go enjoy your graduation.""
She walked away.
That evening, Dad took me to dinner.
Vanessa and Mia didn't come.
Dad tried to pretend that didn't hurt.
I tried too.
When we returned home, the house was quiet.
I climbed upstairs and found Mia sitting outside my bedroom.
She stood when she saw me.
"I need to show you something.""
"If this is another explanation—"
"It's not.""
She pulled a folded envelope from inside her graduation gown.
"I found this in Mom's desk three weeks ago.""
My name was written across the front.
Not in Vanessa's handwriting.
In my father's.
But the envelope had already been opened.
I looked at Mia.
"What is this?""
"That's why Mom wanted you distracted today.""
My fingers went cold.
"What's inside?""
Mia swallowed.
"Something Dad apparently never meant for her to see.""
I opened the envelope.
And the first line made my knees nearly give out.
May you like
It wasn't a letter to me.
It was a copy of my father's will.
