Chapter 14: My Mother's Voice
We didn't hear the recording that night.
Karen insisted everything be handled properly.
For once, Dad listened.
The next afternoon, after investigators copied the relevant files and confirmed the recorder could be released, we gathered in Karen's office.
Dad sat beside me.
Mia sat on my other side.
Vanessa sat across the room.
Daniel wasn't there.
Karen placed the small recorder on the table.
"Ready?""
No.
"Yes.""
She pressed play.
Static filled the room.
Then a voice.
My mother's voice.
I forgot how to breathe.
"Vanessa, I'm recording this because I need an accurate account of what happened.""
Eleven years vanished.
I was seven again.
Mom singing while making pancakes.
Mom brushing my hair.
Mom whispering, "One more chapter," even though bedtime had passed.
I covered my mouth.
Dad silently reached for my hand.
Vanessa's younger voice came through.
"I didn't know the transfers were fraudulent.""
"Then tell me exactly what Daniel asked you to do.""
"He brought signed forms.""
"Signed by me?""
"That's what I thought.""
"You've seen my signature hundreds of times.""
Silence.
Then Vanessa whispered, "I started suspecting something.""
"When?""
"After the third transfer.""
"Why didn't you stop?""
"I needed the job.""
Mom's voice remained calm.
"Vanessa, needing a job explains fear. It doesn't erase responsibility.""
I closed my eyes.
Even angry, she sounded like Mom.
Then Vanessa said something unexpected.
"Daniel wasn't the only one requesting changes.""
Dad leaned forward.
Mom asked, "Who else?""
Paper rustled.
"I don't know. Requests came through internal authorization.""
"From whose login?""
"I printed it.""
More rustling.
Then Mom inhaled.
"That's impossible.""
"What?""
"This employee ID belongs to Richard.""
Dad jerked upright.
"What?""
Karen paused the recording.
Dad looked horrified.
"I never authorized anything.""
"I believe you," I said.
Karen resumed.
Mom's voice sharpened.
"My husband doesn't manage client transfers.""
"I know.""
"So someone used his credentials.""
"That's what it looks like.""
The recording continued.
Mom asked Vanessa to preserve copies.
Vanessa agreed.
Then came Daniel's name again.
"I'll confront him," Mom said.
"No," Vanessa replied quickly.
"If Daniel knows you have this, he'll delete everything.""
Mom went silent.
Finally she said, "Then I need proof outside the company.""
The recording ended.
Dad stood.
"Daniel used my employee credentials.""
Karen held up a hand.
"That's a possibility. The records need to establish who actually accessed them.""
Dad paced.
"He framed me as insurance.""
Vanessa spoke quietly.
"That's what I always believed.""
Dad turned toward her.
"And you never told me?""
"I was terrified.""
"For eleven years?""
Vanessa looked at me.
"After Laura died, Daniel told me the investigation was over. He said if I accused him, he'd produce records showing Richard's login approved the transfers.""
Dad's face hardened.
"So you protected yourself.""
"Yes.""
At least she wasn't pretending anymore.
Karen opened another folder recovered from unit 214.
"There's more.""
Inside were printed internal logs.
Vanessa had saved them.
Karen pointed to a sequence of timestamps.
"Richard's credentials were used at 9:14 p.m.""
Dad nodded slowly.
"So?""
"According to company travel records, you were in Boston that evening.""
Dad stopped.
"I remember that trip.""
Karen turned another page.
"Your hotel keycard was used there at 9:07 p.m.""
Mia leaned forward.
"So Dad couldn't have been at the office.""
"Correct.""
Dad stared at Vanessa.
"You had this?""
"Not the hotel record. Only the login sheet.""
Karen continued.
"And there's something else.""
Another employee badge had accessed the building minutes before Richard's credentials were used.
Daniel Mercer.
Dad sat down.
Nobody spoke.
The truth was suddenly much simpler.
Daniel had stolen from Mom.
Daniel had apparently used Dad's credentials to hide it.
Vanessa had discovered enough to expose him.
And she'd stayed silent.
I looked at her.
"You could have cleared Dad years ago.""
"He wasn't accused.""
"He could have known the truth.""
"I know.""
"You could have told me about Mom.""
"I know.""
"You could've entered our family with honesty.""
Vanessa started crying.
"I know.""
I didn't feel sorry for her.
Not yet.
Maybe not ever.
But something strange happened.
I stopped seeing her as the mastermind behind every bad thing that had happened.
She was something messier.
A frightened person who'd made cowardly choices, then built lies around them until those lies became a home she couldn't escape.
Karen's phone buzzed.
She read the message.
"Investigators have finished reviewing the recovered financial records.""
Dad looked up.
"And?""
"They found evidence supporting Daniel's unauthorized transfers.""
Vanessa closed her eyes.
"But," Karen continued, "there's no evidence Vanessa participated in Laura's theft.""
Mia exhaled.
Then Karen looked at Vanessa.
"However, the recent attempted withdrawal from Ava's trust is another matter.""
Vanessa's eyes opened.
Dad's jaw tightened.
Karen placed a printed document on the table.
"The destination account has been identified.""
I leaned forward.
The account wasn't Daniel's.
It wasn't Vanessa's.
It belonged to Mia.
Mia stared at the page.
"No.""
Vanessa began sobbing.
Mia looked at her.
"Why is my name on that account?""
Vanessa whispered, "Because I opened it for you.""
"When?""
"The week you turned eighteen.""
"Why?""
Vanessa's shoulders shook.
"Because I was going to put the money back where I thought it belonged.""
I stared at her.
"My mother's money?""
Vanessa looked at me.
Then shook her head.
"No, Ava.""
May you like
Her next words silenced the room.
"Money I believed Laura meant for both of you.""
