Chapter 13: Unit 214
"You're not going anywhere.""
Dad blocked the front door before Mia or I could follow him.
"But Mom—"
"Police are already being called.""
Mia grabbed his sleeve.
"She said Daniel was there!""
"Which is exactly why none of us are walking into that storage facility.""
Dad dialed 911.
His voice remained controlled until the dispatcher asked whether Vanessa might be in danger.
Then it cracked.
"Yes.""
Whatever had happened between them, she was still his wife.
And she was still Mia's mother.
We waited.
Those twelve minutes felt longer than my entire graduation ceremony.
Then Dad's phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered immediately.
"Richard Bennett?""
"Yes.""
"This is Officer Coleman. We've located your wife. She's safe.""
Mia collapsed onto the couch.
Dad closed his eyes.
"Daniel?""
"We have another individual here as well. Nobody appears injured.""
"What happened?""
"We'll discuss that when you arrive.""
Dad drove us there after police confirmed the scene was secure.
Blue lights flashed across rows of metal storage units.
Vanessa sat on the back bumper of an ambulance with a blanket around her shoulders.
Mia ran toward her.
"Mom!""
Vanessa stood.
For one second, all the anger disappeared.
They hugged.
Vanessa buried her face against Mia's hair.
"I'm sorry.""
Mia pulled back.
"What happened?""
Vanessa looked toward unit 214.
"Daniel wanted the files.""
Two officers stood beside him near a patrol car.
He wasn't handcuffed.
But he wasn't leaving either.
Dad approached.
"Why?""
Daniel answered from across the lane.
"Because they contain confidential client information.""
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
"You mean evidence.""
Daniel's face tightened.
Officer Coleman stepped between them.
"One at a time.""
Dad looked inside the storage unit.
Boxes lined the walls.
Old financial records.
Photographs.
Binders.
A metal filing cabinet.
Vanessa pointed toward it.
"That's what he wanted.""
Officer Coleman said, "Nobody touches anything until investigators determine what can legally be examined.""
Karen arrived ten minutes later.
Apparently Dad had called her while driving.
She took one look at the unit and muttered, "This family is determined to age me.""
Under different circumstances, I might have laughed.
Vanessa sat beside Mia.
I remained standing.
Eventually, Vanessa looked at me.
"Ava.""
I didn't answer.
"There's something in there for you.""
My stomach tightened.
"What?""
"A recording.""
Dad turned.
"What recording?""
Vanessa stared at the floor.
"Laura.""
I stopped breathing.
"You recorded my mother?""
"No. She recorded me.""
"When?""
"The day she confronted me.""
Dad's voice sharpened.
"You kept it eleven years?""
"I kept everything.""
Vanessa looked toward the boxes.
"At first because I was scared Daniel would blame me.""
Daniel scoffed.
"You processed fraudulent transfers.""
"Because you told me they were authorized!""
"Enough," Officer Coleman warned.
Vanessa continued.
"Later I kept it because I couldn't bring myself to throw Laura's voice away.""
That sentence confused me more than anything else.
"You barely knew her.""
Vanessa's eyes filled.
"No.""
She shook her head.
"That's another lie I told.""
Dad stared at her.
"What does that mean?""
Vanessa looked directly at me.
"Your mother helped me.""
"When?""
"When I was pregnant with Mia.""
Mia froze.
Vanessa took a shaky breath.
"I was twenty-four, unmarried, terrified, working two jobs. Mia's father had disappeared.""
She glanced at her daughter.
"I nearly lost my apartment.""
"What does Mom have to do with that?"" I asked.
"Laura found me crying at work.""
Vanessa smiled faintly through her tears.
"She barely knew me, but she sat beside me for an hour.""
My throat tightened.
That sounded exactly like my mother.
"She connected me with a housing program. Brought me baby clothes. Checked on me.""
Mia whispered, "You never told me.""
"I was ashamed.""
"Of being helped?""
"Of how much I needed it.""
Vanessa looked at me.
"Your mother was kind to me when she had absolutely no reason to be.""
Anger burned through me.
"Then how could you treat me the way you did?""
Vanessa's face crumpled.
"I don't have an answer that makes me look better.""
"Try the truth.""
She nodded.
"The truth is that every time Richard talked about Laura, I remembered what she'd done for me.""
Her voice broke.
"And instead of being grateful, I became jealous of a dead woman.""
Dad looked away.
Vanessa continued.
"You had her face. Her mannerisms. Sometimes even her expressions.""
"So you punished me for reminding you of her.""
"Yes.""
The word landed brutally.
No excuse.
No softening.
Just yes.
I stepped backward.
Mia began crying again.
Officer Coleman approached Karen.
"We found a digital recorder inside the unit. If ownership can be established and the parties consent, your attorney can help arrange access.""
Vanessa immediately said, "It's Ava's.""
Daniel snapped, "You can't just—"
Vanessa turned on him.
"Laura gave it to me after our conversation. She told me to keep it safe until she decided what to do.""
Dad stared at the recorder through the open unit.
"What's on it?""
Vanessa looked at Daniel.
May you like
Then at me.
"The moment Laura realized Daniel wasn't the only person moving her money.""
