Chapter 8: The Mother I Thought I'd Buried
I didn't run toward her immediately.
I couldn't.
My mind kept repeating the same question.
How could my mother be standing in front of me when I'd watched her funeral?
She looked older.
Thinner.
There were faint lines around her eyes, and her hands trembled as she reached toward me.
But it was her.
The woman who used to braid my hair.
The woman who kissed my forehead before school.
The woman whose voice I'd replayed in my head whenever I felt alone.
"Emily," she whispered.
My legs finally moved.
I ran into her arms.
She held me tightly, pressing her face against my hair.
"Oh, my baby.""
I started sobbing.
"You're alive.""
She nodded against my shoulder.
"I'm here.""
"Why didn't you come back?""
Her arms tightened.
"Because I was afraid they'd hurt you.""
Dad stood a few feet away, completely frozen.
Then he stepped forward.
"Laura, what happened?""
She looked at him.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then she began crying.
"Richard, I'm so sorry.""
He shook his head.
"Six years. Six years, Laura. I buried you.""
"I know.""
"I watched them lower your coffin.""
She covered her mouth.
"I know.""
Dad's voice broke.
"Do you have any idea what that did to me? What it did to Emily?""
My mother lowered her eyes.
"I never wanted you to suffer.""
"Then why didn't you tell me?""
Detective Harris interrupted gently.
"Ma'am, before we continue, I need to confirm your identity.""
My mother nodded.
She gave her full name, date of birth, and other identifying information.
An officer checked the records.
Within minutes, the detective had contacted the hospital and requested emergency verification.
My mother also showed him an old identification card and several documents she'd kept hidden.
The confirmation wasn't immediate, but the evidence was enough for him to stop treating her as an unidentified witness.
"Mrs. Carter," he said, "we need to take a formal statement.""
She nodded.
"But first, I need to tell my family what happened.""
We sat inside the chapel.
My mother held my hand.
Dad sat opposite her.
Margaret remained beside Detective Harris.
My mother took a deep breath.
"It started when I discovered money missing from the investment accounts.""
She explained that Daniel Morgan had been managing several financial arrangements connected to her estate.
At first, she believed the missing money was the result of accounting errors.
Then she found transfers to accounts she didn't recognize.
She confronted Daniel.
He denied everything.
A few days later, Vanessa visited her.
"Vanessa told me Daniel was stealing," Mom said.
"She brought me documents and offered to help recover the money.""
Dad frowned.
"Why would she do that?""
"Because she wanted me to trust her.""
My mother looked at me.
"I was worried about you. I thought if I removed Daniel, I could protect everything I'd saved for your future.""
"What happened next?"" I asked.
"Vanessa introduced me to another attorney. She said he could help secure the estate. But during a meeting, I discovered that the documents he wanted me to sign would transfer control of several assets to a company connected to her.""
Margaret leaned forward.
"Did you sign anything?""
"No. I refused.""
My mother explained that shortly afterward, she became seriously ill.
During her hospitalization, Vanessa visited regularly.
She brought flowers.
She spoke gently.
She told my mother that Dad was overwhelmed and that she would take care of me.
But one evening, my mother overheard Vanessa speaking on the phone outside her hospital room.
She heard my name.
And then she heard a sentence that changed everything.
"Once Laura is gone, Emily won't be a problem anymore.""
My mother began crying.
"I knew then that they were planning something.""
Dad clenched his fists.
"Why didn't you call me?""
"I tried.""
"What?""
"I called you that night. Vanessa answered your phone.""
Dad looked confused.
"She told me you were sleeping.""
"I left a message. I told you not to sign anything and not to let Vanessa handle Emily's inheritance.""
Dad stared at her.
"I never received it.""
My mother nodded.
"I found out later that the message had been deleted.""
Detective Harris wrote something in his notebook.
"What happened after that?""
Mom explained that she had discovered a plan involving forged medical authorization forms and a false report concerning her condition.
Daniel and Vanessa had connections at a private medical facility.
Someone had arranged documents suggesting that she had died.
The original plan was to use the false death declaration to trigger control over certain assets.
But my mother had discovered the scheme before they could complete it.
She contacted a trusted nurse and left the hospital through a service entrance.
A woman named Helen, who had worked with her for years, helped her find temporary accommodation.
"Why didn't you contact the police?"" I asked.
Mom squeezed my hand.
"I wanted to. But Daniel had already warned me that he had people who could make documents disappear. I didn't know who was involved.""
Detective Harris looked up.
"You're saying your death was falsely reported?""
"Yes.""
"Do you have evidence?""
My mother nodded.
"I kept copies of the medical paperwork, the original messages, and the names of the people who helped arrange it.""
Margaret leaned forward.
"Where?""
Mom looked at her.
"Some of it is in the storage unit. The rest is with Helen.""
Dad shook his head.
"Why did you stay away for six years?""
Mom's eyes filled again.
"Because I received photographs of Emily leaving school. I received messages describing where she went and who she spoke to. They knew where she lived.""
I felt sick.
"Someone was watching me?""
She nodded.
"I believed they would hurt you if I came back.""
Dad lowered his head.
"And you thought letting me believe you were dead was better?""
"No," she whispered.
"I thought it was the only way to keep you both alive.""
For a moment, the chapel was silent.
Then my mother turned toward me.
"I watched your graduation pictures whenever I could find them. I knew about your bakery job. I knew you wanted to study business.""
I stared at her.
"You knew?""
She nodded.
"I kept every photograph.""
I couldn't stop crying.
"Why couldn't you just tell me?""
She held my face between her hands.
"Because I was terrified that one message would put you in danger.""
Detective Harris stood.
"Mrs. Carter, I need to arrange protection while we investigate these allegations.""
My mother nodded.
Then his phone rang.
He answered.
"Detective Harris.""
His expression changed.
"Where?""
He listened for several seconds.
Then he turned toward us.
"We've located Daniel Morgan.""
Dad stood.
"Where is he?""
The detective looked at my mother.
"At a private residence in Atlanta.""
Mom's face suddenly went pale.
"Which residence?""
The detective checked his phone.
"An address registered under Vanessa Carter.""
My mother grabbed my hand.
"No.""
Dad stepped closer.
"Laura?""
She shook her head.
"She's not just hiding Daniel.""
"What do you mean?""
My mother looked directly at me.
"Vanessa has something that belongs to you. Something she took from the hospital the night I disappeared.""
Margaret frowned.
"What?""
May you like
Mom's voice dropped.
"The original recording of the conversation that proves she planned everything.""
