Chapter 4: The Hearing They Never Expected Me to Attend

My graduation ceremony was supposed to begin at ten.

At 8:15 that morning, I was sitting in a courthouse wearing jeans and an old sweater, watching an attorney explain how my stepmother intended to take control of my inheritance.

Margaret Lewis had arranged an emergency meeting with a judge to challenge Vanessa's application.

My father sat beside me, holding my mother's letter.

He hadn't spoken much during the drive.

Finally, he turned toward me.

"Emily, whatever happens in there, I want you to know something.""

I looked at him.

"What?""

"You are not responsible for any of this.""

I nodded, but my stomach was twisting.

Across the hallway, a woman in a cream-colored suit was speaking to a man with silver hair.

Then I recognized her.

Vanessa.

She was holding a leather folder and wearing the same diamond earrings she'd worn to my mother's funeral.

When she spotted us, she smiled.

Not nervously.

Confidently.

"Richard," she called.

"I was wondering when you'd arrive.""

Dad stood.

"Stay away from Emily.""

Vanessa laughed softly.

"You're making this unnecessarily ugly.""

"You filed a petition to take control of my daughter's inheritance.""

"I filed a petition to protect her.""

"From what?""

Vanessa looked directly at me.

"From herself.""

I stood up.

"What's that supposed to mean?""

She tilted her head.

"Emily, sweetheart, you're emotional. You've been struggling since your mother's death. You've had trouble adjusting to our family, and yesterday's incident proved that you're not thinking clearly.""

I stared at her.

"Your daughter destroyed my dress.""

"See?"" Vanessa turned toward the lawyer beside her.

"This is exactly what I'm talking about.""

Margaret stepped forward.

"Mrs. Carter, I'd advise you to stop making statements.""

Vanessa smiled.

"Margaret. It's been a long time.""

"Not long enough.""

The courtroom clerk opened the door.

"Case number 26-1847. Carter estate petition.""

We entered.

Vanessa sat beside her attorney.

Dad sat with Margaret.

I was asked to sit behind them.

The judge, a stern-looking woman named Judge Reynolds, reviewed the documents.

"Mrs. Carter," she said, "you are requesting temporary authority over Emily Carter's financial assets?""

"Yes, Your Honor.""

"And why?""

Vanessa placed a hand over her chest.

"Emily has experienced significant emotional instability. I've been responsible for her daily care for six years. I'm concerned she'll make reckless financial decisions now that she's legally an adult.""

Judge Reynolds looked at me.

"Emily, do you understand the nature of this hearing?""

"Yes, Your Honor.""

"Do you agree that you need someone to manage your inheritance?""

"No, ma'am.""

Vanessa sighed dramatically.

Margaret stood.

"Your Honor, we object to the petition in its entirety. The application contains false statements and appears designed to obtain control over property held in an irrevocable trust.""

She handed the judge a copy of my mother's original trust documents.

Judge Reynolds examined them.

"Who prepared these?""

"Margaret Lewis. I represented Emily's mother, Laura Carter.""

The judge looked up.

"Did you personally witness the execution of this trust?""

"Yes, Your Honor.""

Vanessa's attorney stood.

"Objection. The trust documents are unrelated to the applicant's concerns regarding Emily's capacity.""

Margaret remained calm.

"They are directly relevant because the petitioner is attempting to gain control of assets she does not legally own.""

Vanessa's attorney frowned.

Judge Reynolds raised her hand.

"Proceed.""

Margaret placed another document on the table.

"This is the original trust's financial statement. It identifies the authorized beneficiary and lists restrictions on withdrawals.""

The judge read it carefully.

Then she turned toward Vanessa.

"Mrs. Carter, why did you authorize a $28,000 payment to a law firm using funds from this account?""

Vanessa's smile disappeared.

"That payment was for legal advice.""

"Advice regarding what?""

Vanessa hesitated.

"Family matters.""

"Which family matters?""

"Property arrangements.""

Judge Reynolds glanced at the documents.

"Property arrangements involving an individual who was deceased at the time the transfer was supposedly signed?""

Vanessa's attorney stood again.

"Your Honor, we request a recess.""

The judge ignored him.

Margaret continued.

"We also have evidence that the petitioner submitted a witness declaration signed by her seventeen-year-old daughter.""

Judge Reynolds examined the signature.

"Where is the witness?""

Vanessa looked toward the courtroom entrance.

At that exact moment, Kayla walked in.

She wore a white designer jacket and carried a small handbag.

Her face was pale.

"Kayla," Vanessa whispered, "sit down.""

But Judge Reynolds spoke first.

"Miss Morgan, please come forward.""

Kayla approached the witness stand.

"Did you sign this declaration?""

Kayla glanced at her mother.

"Yes.""

"Did you personally observe Emily making threats against her family?""

Kayla's lips trembled.

"I...""

Vanessa leaned forward.

"Tell the truth, sweetheart.""

Kayla swallowed.

"I didn't see her threaten anyone.""

The courtroom went silent.

Judge Reynolds looked up.

"Then why did you sign this statement?""

Kayla's eyes filled with tears.

"Mom told me what to write.""

Vanessa stood abruptly.

"That's enough!""

The judge struck her gavel.

"Mrs. Carter, sit down.""

Kayla continued, her voice shaking.

"She said it was just to help with paperwork. She told me Emily would never know.""

Vanessa's attorney grabbed her arm.

"Don't say another word.""

But Kayla was already crying.

Judge Reynolds closed the folder.

"I am suspending consideration of this petition pending a full investigation into the financial records and the authenticity of the submitted documents.""

Vanessa's face turned white.

Then the judge looked directly at her.

"And Mrs. Carter, I strongly suggest you preserve every communication and financial record relating to this estate.""

The hearing was over.

Outside, Dad hugged me.

"We stopped it.""

I buried my face against his shoulder.

But Margaret wasn't smiling.

She was staring at her phone.

"What is it?"" Dad asked.

She showed him an email.

It had arrived from the original law firm.

The subject line read:

*URGENT: ORIGINAL TESTAMENTARY DOCUMENTS LOCATED.*

Margaret opened it.

Her expression changed.

"Richard, there's another document your wife signed before she died.""

Dad frowned.

"What document?""

Margaret looked at me.

"A separate letter of instruction.""

Then she read the final sentence aloud.

"If Vanessa Carter ever attempts to claim ownership of the property, contact the beneficiary immediately and reveal the name of the person who helped her.""
