Chapter 9: The Night My Mother Disappeared

The words echoed in my head.

She didn’t die because of an illness.

For years, I had believed the story.

My mother got sick.

She became weaker.

Then one night, she was gone.

That was all anyone ever told me.

But now Vanessa was saying there was more.

I looked at my father.

“Tell me she’s lying.””

He didn’t.

That was my answer.

My chest tightened.

“What happened?””

My father sat down.

The confidence he always carried was gone.

“I should have told you.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

My voice became quiet.

“You should have.””

He looked at me.

“I was scared.””

“Of what?””

He looked at Vanessa.

And that told me everything.

I turned toward her.

“What happened that night?””

Vanessa wiped her eyes.

“I went to see your mother.””

“Why?””

“To talk.””

I almost laughed.

“Talk about what?””

She looked down.

“About Daniel.””

My father closed his eyes.

I felt sick.

“You were having an affair.””

Nobody denied it.

The silence confirmed it.

My mother knew.

That was what the letter meant.

That was what she was trying to protect me from.

I looked at my father.

“How long?””

He whispered:

“Not long.””

I shook my head.

“You don’t get to say that.””

He looked at me.

“She was sick. I was confused.””

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“You were selfish.””

He lowered his head.

And for once, he didn’t defend himself.

Vanessa spoke quietly.

“Your mother confronted us.””

I looked at her.

“And then?””

She hesitated.

“I left.””

“That’s it?””

“Yes.””

But something about her face told me there was more.

I picked up the flash drive.

“Then why did she record this?””

Nobody answered.

I walked to my laptop.

My hands were shaking as I plugged it in.

My father stood.

“Please.””

I looked back.

“Please what?””

“Don’t do this today.””

I stared at him.

“My graduation day?””

He looked away.

“Yes.””

I laughed bitterly.

“That’s exactly why I’m doing it today.””

The screen opened.

One video file appeared.

The date was the week before my mother died.

I clicked play.

At first, there was only darkness.

Then my mother appeared.

Older.

Tired.

But smiling.

My breath caught.

“Hi, sweetheart.””

I covered my mouth.

Her voice.

After all these years.

Her voice.

“If you’re watching this, something happened that I hoped never would.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She was crying now.

My mother continued.

“I wanted to believe people would choose honesty.””

She paused.

“But some people choose comfort instead.””

My father looked like he couldn’t breathe.

My mother looked directly into the camera.

“There is something you need to know about your father.””

The room went silent.

I leaned closer.

Then she said:

“Daniel didn’t leave because he fell in love with someone else.””

My father’s face changed.

My mother continued.

“He left because he found out what Vanessa had done.””

My heart stopped.

Everyone froze.

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked terrified.

The video kept playing.

And my mother spoke the sentence that changed everything:

“She was the reason Michael died.””

I stopped breathing.

The room went completely silent.

Because the secret Vanessa had buried for years was finally coming back.

And now I needed to know one thing.

What exactly had Vanessa done?
