Chapter 11: My Father’s Confession
Nobody touched the computer.
The file remained open.
Waiting.
My father stared at the screen like it was a door he had spent years keeping locked.
I looked at him.
“Open it.””
He shook his head.
“Please.””
That word.
Please.
Not an order.
Not a command.
A desperate request.
I almost felt sorry for him.
Almost.
But then I remembered the doorway.
The scissors.
The dress.
His silence.
“No.””
My voice was steady.
“You don’t get to hide anymore.””
Evelyn stepped forward.
“Daniel, if there is information relevant to what happened, it needs to be seen.””
My father sat down.
His shoulders dropped.
“Play it.””
I clicked.
The video opened.
My father appeared on the screen.
Years younger.
Sitting in the same room.
Speaking directly to the camera.
My hands went cold.
“I don’t know if I’ll ever show this to anyone.””
His voice shook.
“But I need to say the truth somewhere.””
The younger version of my father looked exhausted.
“I betrayed my wife.””
My eyes lowered.
Hearing him admit it hurt differently.
Not because I didn’t know.
Because I finally heard him say it.
“I fell in love with Vanessa.””
Vanessa looked down.
My father continued.
“At first, I thought it was just a mistake.””
A pause.
“Then Michael died.””
The room became silent.
“I found out Vanessa had lied about what happened.””
The video showed him rubbing his face.
“She told me she had no choice.””
I looked at Vanessa.
No choice.
That was her excuse.
Always.
My father continued.
“I should have gone to the police.””
My heart tightened.
“But I didn’t.””
The video ended for a moment.
Then he said:
“I was afraid of losing everything.””
I looked away.
Because there it was.
The truth.
Not love.
Not loyalty.
Fear.
My father had chosen himself.
The video continued.
“I told myself I was protecting my daughter.””
He looked directly into the camera.
“But I wasn’t.””
A tear moved down his face.
“I was protecting my own life.””
Nobody spoke.
I looked at the real man sitting beside me.
He couldn’t meet my eyes.
“You knew.””
He nodded.
“I suspected.””
“You knew enough.””
“Yes.””
My voice became colder.
“And you let her stay.””
He whispered:
“Yes.””
The answer hurt.
Even though I already knew.
I walked away from him.
The woman who had destroyed my family was one thing.
But my father?
He was supposed to be different.
He was supposed to be the person who protected me.
Instead, he watched.
Just like he watched Vanessa cut my dress.
Just like he watched her take my phone.
Just like he watched her try to steal my future.
I looked at Vanessa.
“Why?””
She wiped her face.
“I loved Daniel.””
I stared at her.
“That’s your answer?””
She looked at me.
“You don’t understand what it’s like to lose everything.””
I laughed softly.
“You’re right.””
I pointed around the room.
“I don’t.””
I looked at my ruined dress.
“My mother lost her life.””
I looked at my father.
“He lost his courage.””
Then I looked at Vanessa.
“And you lost your humanity.””
For once, she had no comeback.
Evelyn checked her phone.
Then looked at me.
“There is something else.””
I frowned.
“What?””
She turned the screen toward me.
“The scholarship committee received another message this morning.””
My stomach tightened.
“From who?””
She hesitated.
Then answered:
“Your father.””
I looked at Daniel.
“What?””
His face changed.
“No.””
Evelyn showed me the email.
My father’s name was there.
A message sent at 7:12 a.m.
Before graduation.
Before the dress was destroyed.
Before any of this happened.
I read the first line.
*I believe my daughter may not be mentally prepared to attend university.*
My hands went numb.
I looked at my father.
“You did this too.””
He immediately shook his head.
“No, I was trying to explain—”
“Explain what?””
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Because there was no explanation.
Then Evelyn spoke quietly.
“There is one more attachment.””
I looked at the email.
A video file.
Sent by my father.
The title made my heart stop.
*The conversation I had with Vanessa last night.*
And suddenly I realized something.
May you like
My father hadn’t just been hiding the past.
He had been planning something for today.
