Chapter 10: The Truth Hidden on the Recording

The video stopped.

Not because it ended.

Because nobody in the room could move.

My mother’s final words remained on the screen.

*She was the reason Michael died.*

I stared at the frozen image of her face.

My mother.

The woman who had always protected me.

The woman who had left behind a box because she knew one day I would need the truth.

My eyes slowly moved toward Vanessa.

She looked broken.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Just broken.

But I had learned something about Vanessa.

Her tears did not always mean regret.

Sometimes they meant she had lost control.

“Explain.””

My voice came out quiet.

Nobody answered.

I looked at my father.

“Explain.””

He sat down slowly.

“I didn’t know she recorded that.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

He looked away.

The shame on his face told me enough.

“You knew something.””

He swallowed.

“Yes.””

My chest tightened.

“How much?””

A long silence.

Then:

“Enough to know your mother was afraid.””

I felt sick.

“She was afraid?””

He nodded.

“She started keeping notes. Documents. Everything.””

“Because of Vanessa?””

My father didn’t answer.

Vanessa finally spoke.

“Your mother misunderstood.””

I turned toward her.

“No.””

She looked at me.

“You don’t get to say that anymore.””

Her face hardened.

“You think a video makes everything true?””

“No.””

I pointed at the screen.

“My mother spent her last days trying to protect me.””

I stepped closer.

“You spent yours trying to destroy me.””

Vanessa flinched.

Evelyn quietly picked up the flash drive.

“There may be more files.””

Everyone looked at her.

My father immediately said:

“No.””

I stared at him.

“Why?””

He didn’t answer.

Evelyn looked at the drive.

“If your wife left evidence, we should see all of it.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“You don’t understand.””

Evelyn looked at her.

“Then help us understand.””

For once, Vanessa had nothing to say.

I clicked the next file.

The screen went black.

Then my mother appeared again.

This time she looked like she was recording in a hurry.

Her hair was messy.

Her eyes were red.

She looked nothing like the woman in my memories.

She looked scared.

“If you’re seeing this second message, then things became worse than I expected.””

My hand covered my mouth.

My father stared at the screen.

My mother continued.

“I found out what happened to Michael.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

The room became silent.

My mother took a breath.

“Vanessa did not tell the police the entire truth.””

My heart raced.

The video shook slightly.

“She was driving that night.””

Vanessa whispered:

“Stop.””

Nobody listened.

My mother continued.

“She said Michael lost control of the vehicle.””

A pause.

“But that is not what happened.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“What happened?””

She didn’t answer.

My mother’s voice became softer.

“Michael discovered Vanessa had been hiding money problems. He wanted to leave. He threatened to expose everything.””

The video froze for a second.

Then:

“Vanessa chased him.””

The room went completely still.

My father covered his face.

I couldn’t breathe.

“No.””

The word escaped my mouth.

Not because I didn’t believe it.

Because I couldn’t believe the person standing in front of me was capable of it.

Vanessa suddenly stood.

“She’s lying!””

Her voice broke.

“She hated me!””

I looked at her.

“My mother?””

“Yes!””

Vanessa pointed at the screen.

“She wanted to ruin me!””

Evelyn stepped between us.

“Then why did you never tell anyone about this recording?””

Vanessa stopped.

That question destroyed her argument.

Because she had no answer.

I looked at my father.

“Did you know?””

He whispered:

“Not everything.””

I stared at him.

“But something.””

He nodded.

“I found out she was involved.””

My stomach turned.

“And you stayed?””

His eyes filled.

“I was afraid.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

I looked at the man who raised me.

“You were protecting yourself.””

He didn’t deny it.

Because it was true.

The graduation clock on the wall kept moving.

Minutes were disappearing.

But for the first time, I didn’t care about being late.

My whole life had been built around a lie.

Then another file appeared on the screen.

The title was simple.

*Daniel’s Confession.*

My father saw it.

May you like

And his face changed completely.

Because he knew exactly what was inside.
