Chapter 9: The Account Hidden For Me
The bank account had been inactive for almost ten years.
That was the first thing the manager told us.
“Your mother opened it shortly before she passed away,” he explained.
Dad sat across from him, holding the old letter.
I sat beside him, trying to understand how my mother could still be leaving pieces of herself behind after all these years.
“How much is in it?”” Dad asked.
The manager glanced at the screen.
“Approximately thirty-six thousand dollars.””
I stopped breathing.
Thirty-six thousand.
Another hidden account.
Another piece of my future.
Dad looked at me.
“This was supposed to be yours.””
The manager nodded.
“She left instructions.””
“What instructions?”” I asked.
He opened a file.
“She wanted Emma to access the account when she turned eighteen.””
My eyes burned.
I was eighteen now.
The timing felt impossible.
“What happens now?””
The manager looked serious.
“Unfortunately, there was a recent attempt to change the account information.””
Dad’s hands tightened.
“By who?””
The manager looked at the documents.
“Someone claiming to be authorized.””
I already knew.
“Vanessa.””
The manager didn’t respond.
He didn’t need to.
Dad leaned forward.
“When was the request made?””
The manager checked.
“Two weeks ago.””
My stomach dropped.
Two weeks ago.
The same time Vanessa started asking about my summer job.
The same time she began telling me college was expensive.
She wasn’t just waiting for an opportunity.
She was searching for money.
Dad looked furious.
“She knew about this account.””
The manager nodded.
“Someone provided your family records.””
I stared at the paperwork.
“Can she take it?””
“No.””
The manager shook his head.
“The request was flagged because the signature didn’t match.””
A strange feeling passed through me.
The fake signatures.
The stolen money.
The documents.
Everything Vanessa did was starting to collapse.
But one question remained.
“How did my mother know?””
Dad looked at me.
“What do you mean?””
I held up the letter.
“She knew someone would try this.””
The manager looked at the old document.
Then said something that made both of us freeze.
“Your mother left another instruction.””
“What instruction?””
He opened a sealed envelope.
“This one was not supposed to be opened until Emma discovered financial fraud involving someone close to the family.””
My heart pounded.
My mother had predicted this.
The manager handed me the envelope.
My name was written across the front.
Emma.
My hands shook as I opened it.
Inside was one page.
Only one.
But the first sentence made tears fill my eyes.
My daughter, if you are reading this, I am sorry I wasn’t there to protect you.
I covered my mouth.
Dad looked away, fighting his own emotions.
I kept reading.
My mother wrote that she had suspected someone was trying to gain control of family finances.
She wrote that she had hidden evidence.
She wrote that she had trusted only one person to help her.
One person who knew everything.
At the bottom of the page was a name.
I stared at it.
Because it wasn’t Vanessa.
It wasn’t Daniel.
It wasn’t my dad.
It was someone I had never expected.
Someone who had been part of our lives for years.
Dad looked over my shoulder.
His face changed.
“Impossible.””
I whispered the name.
And suddenly, every secret connected.
Because my mother’s final warning wasn’t about Vanessa.
May you like
It was about the person Vanessa had been working with from the beginning.
And that person was still inside our family.
