Chapter 13: The Truth My Mother Left Behind

The room went silent after Rebecca’s words.

“The person who raised you.””

I stared at her.

My brain refused to connect the sentence.

My father sat beside me, frozen.

Thomas watched us from across the table with an expression I couldn’t read.

And Rebecca?

She looked almost relieved.

Like she had been carrying a secret for years and was finally putting it down.

“No,” I whispered.

Rebecca didn’t look away.

“Emma—”

“No.””

I pushed the document away.

“You’re saying my dad did this?””

My voice cracked.

“You’re saying the man who raised me, the man who worked every extra shift, the man who saved money for my college… was the problem?””

Rebecca looked at my father.

“I’m saying your mother discovered something.””

Dad’s jaw tightened.

“What?””

Rebecca opened the folder.

Inside was another letter.

This one was older.

Much older.

“It wasn’t written to you.””

She looked at me.

“It was written to me.””

My eyes widened.

“To you?””

Rebecca nodded.

“Your mother and I were friends before she hired me.””

Dad looked confused.

“You never told me that.””

“Because your wife’s actions made me believe someone in this family was dangerous.””

The words hit hard.

My father looked hurt.

“Someone in this family.””

Rebecca placed the letter on the table.

“Your mother wrote that she suspected Thomas was stealing money.””

I exhaled.

That part wasn’t surprising anymore.

“But she also wrote that she discovered someone else was helping him.””

My eyes moved to Dad.

Rebecca noticed.

“No.””

She shook her head.

“Not Michael.””

Everyone went still.

“Then who?””

Rebecca looked at the paper.

“Someone who had access to the family’s personal documents.””

My heart sank.

“Vanessa.””

Rebecca nodded.

“But Vanessa wasn’t the person who started it.””

I felt trapped in a maze.

Every answer created another question.

“Then who?””

Rebecca turned the page.

And showed us a photograph.

A man.

A woman.

A child.

The image was old.

But I recognized the people.

My mother.

Thomas.

And Vanessa.

I stared.

“They knew each other?””

Rebecca nodded.

“Before Vanessa married your father.””

Dad looked shocked.

“What?””

Rebecca continued.

“Vanessa worked with Thomas years ago.””

My stomach turned.

“So she knew him before?””

“Yes.””

The room became silent.

Suddenly everything connected.

The laptop.

The stolen savings.

The fake signatures.

The hidden accounts.

Vanessa wasn’t randomly making bad decisions.

She had been pulled into something much bigger.

Dad stood.

“Where is Vanessa now?””

Rebecca looked at him.

“She agreed to testify.””

I frowned.

“She did?””

Rebecca nodded.

“She knows Thomas is the only person who can save himself by blaming everyone else.””

Thomas finally spoke.

“You’re making a mistake.””

Everyone turned.

His calm expression was gone.

“You think you understand what happened.””

Dad stepped toward him.

“We understand enough.””

Thomas smiled slightly.

“No. You understand what Rebecca wants you to believe.””

Rebecca’s face hardened.

“You don’t get to rewrite this.””

Thomas leaned back.

“Do you really think your wife trusted you, Michael?””

Dad froze.

Thomas continued.

“She knew about the accounts. She knew about the documents. She knew about the money.””

I looked at Rebecca.

“Is that true?””

Rebecca didn’t answer immediately.

That scared me.

Finally, she said:

“Vanessa made mistakes.””

Dad shook his head.

“Mistakes?””

Rebecca looked down.

“She was scared.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Everyone was scared.””

I stood.

“And I was the one who lost everything.””

Nobody spoke.

Because it was true.

Everyone had excuses.

Everyone had fears.

Everyone had reasons.

But I was the one who worked all summer.

I was the one who checked my account every night.

I was the one who watched my future disappear.

Rebecca looked at me.

“You’re right.””

Her voice was quiet.

“We all failed you.””

That was the first honest thing anyone had said.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

From Vanessa.

I opened it.

Emma,

I found the original documents.

The ones Thomas never wanted anyone to see.

Meet me alone.

I looked up.

Dad saw my face.

“What happened?””

I locked my phone.

Because I already knew.

The final piece of the truth was waiting.

May you like

And this time…

I was going to find it myself.
