Chapter 12: The Evidence That Disappeared

I hung up.

I didn’t move.

I couldn’t.

Rebecca’s words repeated in my head.

It was your father.

No.

Impossible.

My dad was the person who protected me.

The person who worked extra hours.

The person who created a college fund.

The person who stood beside me when everyone else made me feel invisible.

But then I remembered something.

The letter.

My mother’s warning.

Someone close.

Someone trusted.

I looked at Dad.

He was watching my face.

“What happened?””

I couldn’t answer.

Not immediately.

Because saying it out loud made it real.

“Rebecca called.””

His expression softened.

“What did she say?””

I swallowed.

“She said you destroyed evidence after Mom died.””

The silence was unbearable.

Dad didn’t look angry.

He looked hurt.

“Emma.””

“Is it true?””

He stared at me.

Then sat down.

And that scared me more than anger would have.

“Not the way she means.””

I felt my heart pounding.

“Then explain.””

Dad rubbed his hands together.

“I found documents after your mother died.””

“What documents?””

“Records showing money missing.””

I frowned.

“From Thomas?””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then why hide them?””

His eyes filled with regret.

“Because I was afraid.””

I didn’t expect that answer.

“Afraid of what?””

He looked down.

“Of losing everything.””

The room became quiet.

“My wife had just died. I had a child to raise. I couldn’t understand how someone I trusted could betray us.””

I sat across from him.

“What did you do?””

“I confronted Thomas.””

“And?””

“He threatened me.””

My stomach tightened.

“What did he say?””

Dad looked toward the window.

“He said if I exposed him, he would make sure I lost custody of you.””

My breath caught.

“He couldn’t do that.””

“He convinced me he could.””

I hated that part of me understood.

My dad had been grieving.

Scared.

Trying to protect me.

“What happened to the documents?””

Dad hesitated.

“I hid them.””

I stared.

“You hid them?””

“Yes.””

“Where?””

He looked at me.

“I thought they would be safer somewhere nobody could find them.””

My phone suddenly buzzed.

A message.

From Rebecca.

I opened it.

There was a photo attached.

A picture of a document.

The caption said:

Found in Michael’s old storage unit.

My blood went cold.

Dad saw my expression.

“What?””

I turned the phone toward him.

He stared.

“That’s impossible.””

“Why?””

“Because I destroyed those papers.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

Dad’s face changed.

“I burned them.””

A cold silence filled the room.

“But Rebecca found them.””

Dad slowly stood.

“That means…”

He didn’t finish.

He didn’t have to.

Someone had saved copies.

Someone knew exactly where to find them.

And someone wanted us to believe my father was guilty.

The next day, we went to Rebecca’s office.

She was waiting.

But she wasn’t alone.

Thomas was there.

Sitting calmly.

Like he belonged.

I stopped walking.

“What is he doing here?””

Rebecca smiled.

A small, strange smile.

The kind that made my instincts scream.

“He’s here because you finally deserve the truth.””

Dad stepped forward.

“You worked with him.””

Rebecca didn’t deny it.

“Yes.””

My stomach dropped.

She looked at me.

“I tried to protect you.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

She tilted her head.

“You still don’t understand.””

Thomas placed a folder on the table.

Inside was one final document.

One that had my mother’s handwriting.

One that could prove everything.

Rebecca pushed it toward me.

“Your mother didn’t die believing Thomas was the enemy.””

I looked at the page.

Then at her.

“Then who was?””

Rebecca’s eyes met mine.

May you like

And she said:

“The person who raised you.””
