Chapter 3: My Mother’s Final Warning

My father sat down slowly.

The letter shook slightly in his hands.

For a moment, I thought he might not open it.

Then he looked at me.

“Emily, your mother wrote this for you.””

My eyes filled instantly.

“Why didn’t I know about it?””

Dad looked toward Vanessa.

That silence answered everything.

Vanessa stepped back.

“Daniel, this is ridiculous.””

Dad ignored her.

He unfolded the paper.

The room became completely quiet.

Then he started reading.

“Emily, if you are reading this, it means I am no longer there to protect you.””

I covered my mouth.

The tears came before I could stop them.

Mom’s words.

Her actual words.

After all this time.

Dad continued.

“I know you will try to be strong. You always did. But there is something important I need you to understand.””

He paused.

Vanessa looked uncomfortable.

Dad kept reading.

“Some people enter our lives and appear to love us because of what we provide. Pay attention to actions, not promises.””

My eyes moved toward Vanessa.

She looked away.

Dad continued.

“Before I became too sick, I noticed things disappearing. Small things at first. Things I thought I misplaced.””

The air felt heavy.

My father lowered the letter.

“Small things?””

I whispered.

Dad kept reading.

“She said she found this letter after I passed.””

My head snapped up.

“What?””

Dad looked confused.

“She told me she had found a letter from your mother.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“I was trying to help.””

Dad looked at her.

“Help?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“She was gone. Someone needed to organize things.””

I stared at her.

“You opened Mom’s private letter?””

“I was your stepmother.””

“That doesn’t give you permission.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“You have no idea how difficult things were after Laura died.””

I stepped forward.

“And you have no idea how difficult things were for me.””

Nobody spoke.

Because that was the first time I had said it.

Out loud.

I wasn’t just angry about the car.

I was angry because everyone expected me to move on.

To accept replacements.

A new wife.

A new family.

A new life.

But nobody asked what I lost.

Dad looked back at the letter.

“There’s more.””

He read quietly.

“Emily, I left something important with your father. It is not about money. It is about proof.””

Proof.

The word made my stomach twist.

“What proof?””

Dad continued.

“I discovered someone had been accessing my belongings without my permission. If anything happens to my property after I’m gone, check the storage box behind the garage wall.””

Vanessa suddenly went completely still.

Dad noticed.

“What?””

She shook her head.

“Nothing.””

But it wasn’t nothing.

Dad folded the letter.

“Behind the garage wall?””

Vanessa’s voice became sharper.

“Daniel, don’t go digging through old things because Emily is upset.””

Dad stared at her.

“You knew about this?””

“No.””

“You reacted like you did.””

She looked away.

Madison quietly stepped forward.

“Mom?””

Vanessa snapped.

“Stay out of this.””

Madison flinched.

I noticed.

And for the first time, I wondered how much Madison knew.

Dad grabbed his keys.

“We’re checking the garage.””

Vanessa moved in front of the door.

“Daniel, stop.””

He looked at her.

“Move.””

Her expression changed.

“You’re really choosing her over me?””

Dad’s eyes hardened.

“This isn’t about choosing sides.””

He looked at me.

“This is about your mother trusting me to protect you.””

A few minutes later, we were standing behind the garage.

The old brick wall had a loose panel near the bottom.

Dad pulled it away.

Behind it was a small metal box covered in dust.

My heart raced.

He opened it.

Inside were photographs.

Receipts.

Documents.

And one envelope.

Not from my mother.

From Vanessa.

Dad picked it up.

His face became pale.

“What is it?”” I asked.

He didn’t answer.

He turned the envelope over.

The handwriting was Vanessa’s.

And on the front were six words that made my blood run cold.

“Payment received. Emily’s inheritance transferred.””

Dad looked at Vanessa standing in the garage doorway.

“Explain this.””

Vanessa said nothing.

And then Madison whispered from behind her,

“Mom…”

May you like

Her voice trembled.

“What did you do?””
