Chapter 2: The Folder in My Father’s Office

I had walked into my father’s office hundreds of times.

But that night, it felt like I was entering a stranger’s room.

The lights were off.

The curtains were closed.

Dad’s desk looked exactly the same as always, but everything felt different.

Because now I knew someone had been hiding something.

I opened the bottom drawer.

The blue folder was there.

My mother’s name was written across the front.

Laura Carter.

My hands froze.

Mom’s handwriting.

Even seeing her name made my throat tighten.

I carried the folder back downstairs.

Vanessa was standing near the kitchen island.

She looked nervous.

That scared me more than her anger.

Dad took the folder from me and opened it.

Madison watched from the doorway.

“What is going on?”” she asked.

Dad pulled out several papers.

“Your mother’s estate documents.””

Vanessa looked away.

“Daniel, this is unnecessary.””

“No,” Dad said.

“What’s unnecessary is pretending you didn’t know the terms.””

He placed one paper on the table.

“The Honda was transferred to Emily after graduation.””

I stared at the page.

My name was there.

Officially.

Legally.

Mine.

Madison looked at Vanessa.

“Mom?””

Vanessa stayed silent.

Dad continued.

“Laura specifically wrote that the vehicle was to remain untouched until Emily completed school.””

My voice shook.

“So you knew?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“I knew it was an old car.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

She sighed.

“Emily, you need to understand something.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“You need to understand something.””

My voice cracked.

“That was the last thing my mother gave me.””

Vanessa’s face hardened.

“She gave you a car.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“No. She gave me something that still had pieces of her in it.””

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Madison quietly said,

“Mom, did you actually sell it without telling Dad?””

Vanessa looked annoyed.

“Don’t start.””

Madison stepped back.

“I’m just asking.””

Dad picked up his phone.

“Who bought it?””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“Some dealership.””

“Which one?””

“Why does that matter?””

“Because if you sold something that wasn’t yours to sell, it matters very much.””

The confidence disappeared from Vanessa’s face.

Dad started searching through his phone.

Then he stopped.

His expression changed.

“What?””

I looked at him.

He turned the screen toward himself.

“I’m checking the bank account.””

Vanessa suddenly moved.

“Daniel, don’t.””

Those three words changed everything.

Dad looked up.

“What did you do?””

“I already told you.””

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

“Tell me why you’re afraid.””

Vanessa’s jaw tightened.

“You’re making me look like a criminal over a stupid old car.””

Dad stared at her.

“Laura’s car was worth maybe eight thousand dollars.””

He tapped the screen.

“But the transfer from the dealership was twenty-three thousand.””

Everyone went silent.

Madison frowned.

“Twenty-three?””

Dad looked at Vanessa.

“Where is the rest of the money?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

My heart started pounding.

Because suddenly this wasn’t about a car.

It was about everything I didn’t know.

Dad stood up.

“Emily, stay here.””

He walked toward Vanessa.

“Did you sell the car privately?””

“No.””

“Did you report the correct sale price?””

“Daniel…”

“Answer me.””

She looked away.

That was the answer.

Dad closed his eyes for a moment.

Then he whispered,

“Oh my God.””

I had never heard my father sound afraid before.

Not when Mom was sick.

Not when the doctors gave us bad news.

Not even when we lost her.

But now?

Now he looked terrified.

I grabbed the folder.

“Dad, what else is in here?””

He didn’t respond.

I flipped through the pages.

Most were normal documents.

Then I saw an envelope.

My name was written on it.

Emily.

My hands went cold.

“Dad…”

He looked at the envelope.

And his face changed.

“Where did you find that?””

I swallowed.

“It was inside the folder.””

Vanessa suddenly rushed forward.

“Give me that.””

Dad stepped between us.

“No.””

Her eyes widened.

“Daniel.””

“No.””

He held the envelope tightly.

“This was sealed by Laura.””

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Dad slowly opened it.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

Only three words were visible at the top.

“If something happens…”

My heart stopped.

Because my mother had written that letter before she died.

May you like

And somehow…

Vanessa had never wanted me to read it.
