Chapter 11: The Car She Thought Was Gone Forever
For several seconds, nobody moved.
The words didn’t make sense.
Vanessa bought the car.
After selling it.
Dad looked at the manager.
“Are you sure?””
The man nodded.
“The auction records show the buyer as Vanessa Carter.””
My mind raced.
Why would she sell something…
then buy it back?
Unless she knew.
Unless she knew something was inside.
Dad immediately called her.
She answered after three rings.
“Daniel?””
His voice was cold.
“Where is Laura’s Honda?””
Silence.
Then:
“What?””
“The blue Honda.””
Another pause.
“Why?””
“Because you bought it back.””
I heard her breathing change.
Dad put the phone on speaker.
“Explain.””
Vanessa’s voice became defensive.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.””
“The auction records say you purchased it.””
“That’s impossible.””
“No.””
Dad looked at me.
“It’s not.””
Vanessa went quiet.
Then she said,
“Where are you?””
Dad didn’t answer.
“Where is the car?””
Still nothing.
Then she hung up.
Madison looked terrified.
“She knew.””
I nodded.
“She knew there was something in it.””
Dad drove straight to the auction yard.
The employee behind the desk searched the records.
“The vehicle was picked up three days ago.””
“By who?””
The employee checked.
“Vanessa Carter.””
Dad clenched his jaw.
“Where did she take it?””
The employee looked at the notes.
“Repair shop.””
My heart sank.
“What repair shop?””
He gave us the address.
Twenty minutes later, we arrived.
A small garage behind an old warehouse.
Dad walked inside.
A mechanic looked up.
“Can I help you?””
Dad showed him the paperwork.
“We’re looking for a blue Honda.””
The mechanic’s face changed.
“Vanessa sent you?””
“No.””
Dad stepped closer.
“She’s hiding something from us.””
The mechanic hesitated.
Then sighed.
“She told me not to talk about it.””
My stomach tightened.
“What did she ask you to do?””
The mechanic looked uncomfortable.
“She wanted me to remove something from the car.””
My heart started pounding.
“What?””
He pointed toward the back.
“The spare tire compartment.””
Nobody spoke.
Dad closed his eyes.
“She found it.””
The mechanic nodded.
“She came in angry. She kept saying she should have checked that car years ago.””
Madison whispered,
“She knew.””
The mechanic walked to a shelf.
He picked up a small plastic bag.
“I saved this because it seemed wrong.””
Inside was a torn piece of paper.
Not the thing Vanessa took.
Just a piece that fell behind the compartment.
I grabbed it.
My mother’s handwriting.
Only part of a sentence remained.
“…if Vanessa discovers this before Emily…”
The rest was missing.
Dad looked at the mechanic.
“Did she take everything?””
“I don’t know.””
“What did she remove?””
The mechanic hesitated.
“A small envelope.””
My heart dropped.
“What was inside?””
He shook his head.
“I didn’t see.””
Dad looked at me.
My mother had hidden proof.
Vanessa found it first.
But then the mechanic added,
“She left something behind.””
“What?””
He walked toward a toolbox.
From the bottom drawer, he pulled out a small object.
A USB drive.
“It was taped under the seat.””
I stared at it.
Mom’s handwriting was written on the label.
For Emily.
Dad took a slow breath.
“Your mother made backups.””
I held the drive tightly.
For the first time in days, I felt something besides anger.
Hope.
Because Vanessa may have stolen the documents.
She may have taken the money.
She may have sold the car.
But she didn’t know everything.
We went back to Dad’s house.
The three of us sat around the computer.
Dad inserted the USB drive.
A single folder appeared.
“Laura.””
Inside were dozens of files.
Photos.
Documents.
Videos.
Then one video file.
Created one week before Mom passed away.
I clicked it.
The screen went black.
Then my mother appeared.
Older.
Tired.
But smiling.
“Hi, Emily.””
I covered my mouth.
I had not heard her voice in almost a year.
She looked directly into the camera.
And then she said something that made all of us freeze.
“If Vanessa is watching this…”
The video paused.
Buffering.
Then continued.
May you like
My mother whispered:
“…it means she already found what she was looking for.””
