Chapter 13: The Last Trap My Stepmother Set for Me

“She's trying to have my son committed.””

My father's voice shook with anger.

Robert Hayes immediately closed the laptop.

“Marcus, listen carefully. We need to establish whether this admission request is legitimate before anyone makes a move. If someone has forged your signature, we need to preserve the original document.””

Daniel was already making calls.

“I'll contact the hospital's compliance department and the authorities. Nobody should approach Ethan without proper legal authorization.””

I stared at the form on the screen.

My name.

My date of birth.

My father's forged signature.

And Vanessa listed as my emergency contact.

She had spent three years telling my father I was dangerous.

Now she was trying to make that accusation official.

“Why would she do this?”” I asked.

Richard answered.

“Because you're eighteen now. You can access the inheritance. You can challenge the property transactions. And you can expose everything she did.””

Dad grabbed his jacket.

“I'm going to find her.””

Robert blocked the doorway.

“Not alone, Marcus. That's exactly what she wants. If you confront her without proper documentation, she'll turn this into another story about your behavior.””

Dad stopped.

He looked at me.

Then he slowly put his jacket down.

For the first time, he understood that Vanessa's greatest weapon had never been money.

It had been his willingness to believe her.

At 10:15 that morning, Daniel called.

“The hospital confirmed the admission request was submitted electronically yesterday. It includes a medical assessment from Dr. Samuel Reed.””

“Can they legally admit me?”” I asked.

“Not on the basis of a forged signature alone. However, we need to make sure nobody acts on the false paperwork.””

Robert requested a copy of the original submission.

Twenty minutes later, it arrived.

The document included a statement claiming I had threatened family members, displayed violent behavior, and suffered severe emotional instability.

One incident was described in detail.

The living room assault.

The one Brittany had staged.

The one the security camera had disproved.

I laughed bitterly.

“She used the fake accusation again.””

Robert examined the document.

“There's something interesting here.””

He pointed to the bottom.

The assessment had been signed by Dr. Samuel Reed at 6:42 p.m. the previous evening.

But another section listed the examination location.

*Williams Residence — 18 Oakridge Lane.*

Dad shook his head.

“Dr. Reed was never here.””

I looked at him.

“Are you sure?””

“I would remember.””

Daniel enlarged the document.

“There's also a digital location record attached to the submission.””

He studied it.

“Interesting.””

“What?””

“The assessment was uploaded from a device registered to Northstar Holdings.””

Nobody spoke.

Vanessa's company.

The same company receiving stolen money.

The same company attempting to take my mother's inheritance.

Richard leaned back.

“She wasn't just trying to get Ethan committed. She was using a medical document to make the transfer look legitimate.””

Robert nodded.

“If Ethan were declared legally incapacitated, someone could attempt to obtain control over his financial affairs.””

Dad looked sick.

“And Vanessa would become his representative.””

“Exactly,” Robert replied.

I stood.

“Then we need to stop her.””

Daniel nodded.

“We have enough to request an emergency investigation. But I want to know where Dr. Reed is before we make any assumptions.””

His phone rang.

He listened for several seconds.

Then he looked at us.

“We found him.””

Dr. Reed was staying at a private medical conference hotel outside the city.

He agreed to meet investigators after receiving a call from Daniel.

When we arrived, he looked like a man who hadn't slept in days.

He was sitting alone in a small conference room, his hands wrapped around a paper coffee cup.

Dad approached him.

“Why did you sign a psychiatric admission request for my son?””

Dr. Reed looked down.

“Mr. Williams, I didn't personally examine Ethan.””

“Then why did you sign?””

“Vanessa told me there was an emergency.””

“What emergency?””

“She claimed Ethan had become violent and was threatening the household.””

I stepped forward.

“You never even spoke to me.””

He looked at me.

“I know.””

“Then why?””

He swallowed.

“Because I owed her a favor.””

Dad's face hardened.

“What favor?””

Dr. Reed closed his eyes.

“Seven years ago, Vanessa asked me to alter a medication order for Danielle Williams.””

My father grabbed the back of a chair.

“You changed my wife's medication?””

“I was told it was a temporary adjustment.””

“By whom?””

“Vanessa.””

Richard stepped forward.

“Did she tell you Danielle had agreed?””

Dr. Reed shook his head.

“No.””

“Did you speak to her physician?””

“No.””

“Did you know Danielle had a documented contraindication?””

The doctor lowered his head.

“Yes.””

Dad looked as though he might collapse.

“Why would you do that?””

Dr. Reed finally looked up.

“Because Vanessa had evidence that could destroy my career. She knew I'd made mistakes in another case. She threatened to expose me unless I helped her.””

Robert spoke calmly.

“Do you have documentation?””

Dr. Reed nodded.

“I kept copies of the original orders.””

He reached into his briefcase and removed a sealed envelope.

Inside were two versions of Danielle's medication chart.

The first showed the original treatment plan.

The second contained the altered prescription.

The signatures were different.

But there was something else.

A handwritten note attached to the second version.

Make sure this is completed before the family arrives.

Signed:

*Vanessa Williams.*

Dad stared at it.

Then he looked at Dr. Reed.

“Did you know what happened to Danielle afterward?””

Dr. Reed nodded slowly.

“I learned the next morning that she had died. I was told the reaction was unexpected.””

“Was it?””

The doctor looked directly at him.

“I can't determine that without a full independent medical review. But I knew the change had been made without proper authorization.””

Dad turned away.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he asked:

“Why did you sign Ethan's admission form?””

Dr. Reed's voice cracked.

“Vanessa told me that if I didn't help her one last time, she'd release the documents I had spent seven years trying to hide.””

Robert collected the records.

Daniel immediately contacted the authorities.

The doctor agreed to provide a formal statement.

But as we were leaving, he called after me.

“Ethan?””

I turned.

He looked ashamed.

“Your mother left something with me. Something Vanessa never found.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

He reached into his briefcase again.

This time, he removed a small envelope.

It had my mother's handwriting.

For my son, if the truth is ever uncovered.

I opened it.

Inside was a single photograph.

My mother stood beside a hospital bed.

And lying in that bed was a man I had never seen before.

On the back, she had written:

The man who knows why Vanessa needed me gone.

I looked at Richard.

He was staring at the photograph.

His face had turned completely white.

“Ethan,” he whispered.

I turned the picture over again.

The man in the hospital bed was wearing a name bracelet.

*DANIELLE WILLIAMS.*

But the photograph had been taken three days after the date on her death certificate.

May you like

My mother hadn't been dead when that photograph was taken.

And somebody had made absolutely certain we would never discover that.
