Chapter 12: The Prescription That Changed Everything

Dad slowly picked up David's phone.

“Vanessa?””

There was silence.

Then she answered.

“Marcus?””

His voice was barely audible.

“Where are you?””

“Why are you calling from David's phone?””

“Because your brother just told me you were involved in Danielle's medication.””

Vanessa didn't respond.

Dad closed his eyes.

“Did you give my wife something she wasn't supposed to take?””

“Marcus, you need to stop listening to these people.””

“ANSWER ME!””

Her voice became sharp.

“Your wife was already dying!””

Richard stepped closer.

“That's not what the medical records say.””

Vanessa laughed.

“Richard. Still pretending you're the hero?””

Dad gripped the phone.

“What medication?””

“You don't understand what happened that night.””

“Then explain it!””

She took a long breath.

“Danielle was unstable. She was accusing everyone of stealing from her. She was going to destroy your business, Marcus.

Your company. Everything you had built.””

“So you decided to silence her?””

“I did what I had to do!””

The words came out so quickly that even she seemed surprised.

Dad stared at the phone.

David covered his face.

Richard immediately signaled for Daniel.

The investigator had been waiting outside with the officers.

He entered the warehouse.

“Mr. Williams, keep the call connected.””

Vanessa's voice continued.

“Marcus, listen to me. David is lying. He wants to take control of the company.””

Dad swallowed.

“Why did you tell him not to mention the prescription?””

“Because he doesn't know the whole story.””

“What story?””

She hesitated.

Then she said something that made my heart stop.

“Danielle wasn't supposed to die that night.””

The warehouse went silent.

Dad's fingers tightened around the phone.

“What?””

Vanessa began breathing heavily.

“I was supposed to give her something that would make her too weak to attend the meeting with Robert. That was all.””

Richard stepped forward.

“What did you give her?””

“I didn't know she'd react that way!””

Dad's face crumpled.

“You gave my wife something?””

Vanessa started crying.

“I was trying to stop her from destroying everything!””

Daniel gestured to the officers.

One of them quietly took the phone and activated the recording function.

Dad stared at David.

“Did you know?””

David shook his head.

“I swear I didn't know what she gave her.””

“Then why did you bring the paperwork?””

“Because Vanessa told me Danielle had agreed to sign the documents.””

Richard laughed bitterly.

“Your sister-in-law was unconscious in a hospital bed, and you believed she'd agreed to sign away her son's inheritance?””

David lowered his eyes.

“I thought she was already gone.””

Dad stepped toward him.

“You thought?””

David said nothing.

The officers escorted David to a separate vehicle for questioning.

Vanessa's location was traced to a hotel on the other side of town.

She was detained before she could leave the property.

But the most important evidence was still missing.

The original prescription.

The hospital authorization.

And the full medical record.

The following morning, Robert Hayes arrived at our house carrying two thick boxes.

He looked exhausted.

“I received the call from Daniel,” he said.

“I assume you've heard the recording.””

Dad nodded.

“Everything.””

Robert placed the boxes on the dining table.

“Then we need to look at the original medical documents.””

I sat beside him.

He removed a sealed envelope.

“This is the copy Danielle gave me before she died. She had already requested her medical records because she believed someone was interfering with her treatment.””

Dad looked at him.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because the documents were incomplete, and I couldn't prove who had authorized the medication.””

Robert opened the envelope.

Inside were hospital records, pharmacy receipts, and a handwritten note from my mother.

Daniel joined us through a video call.

He examined the documents.

“There's a prescription here that doesn't match the medication list approved by Danielle's physician.””

Dad leaned forward.

“Who authorized it?””

Robert pointed toward the bottom of the page.

The authorization carried Marcus Williams's name.

But the signature was slightly different.

Dad stared.

“That's not mine.””

Robert nodded.

“We had it examined years ago. The signature appears to have been copied from an earlier insurance document.””

I felt sick.

“Can you prove who submitted it?””

Robert removed another paper.

“This is the pharmacy's delivery confirmation.””

A name appeared under RECEIVED BY.

Vanessa Williams.

Dad leaned back.

He looked as though the room had become too small for him.

Robert continued.

“There's another detail. Danielle's doctor had specifically instructed the hospital to avoid this medication because of a documented reaction.””

“Then why was it administered?”” Dad asked.

“Someone changed the order.””

Daniel spoke through the laptop.

“We'll need the original hospital records and the physician's testimony before drawing conclusions. But this is significant evidence.””

I stared at the paperwork.

For seven years, I had believed my mother died because her body couldn't fight an illness.

Now I was looking at documents suggesting someone had deliberately interfered with her treatment.

“Did Mom know?”” I asked.

Robert nodded.

“She suspected it.””

He removed a final envelope.

“This was attached to her medical file.””

My name was written across the front.

I opened it carefully.

Inside was a small photograph of Mom and me sitting in the garden.

On the back, she had written:

Ethan, if someone ever tells you I gave up fighting, don't believe them. I fought for you every single day.

My vision blurred.

Dad put his arm around my shoulders.

For the first time since the investigation began, I allowed myself to cry.

Robert waited until I had finished reading.

Then he removed another document.

“This is the reason Danielle wanted me to wait until Ethan turned eighteen.””

It was a handwritten amendment to the trust.

I looked at the first paragraph.

*The primary beneficiary shall receive full control of the estate upon reaching eighteen, provided the beneficiary has not been unlawfully deprived of his legal identity or property rights.*

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Robert explained.

“Your mother anticipated that someone might attempt to have you declared unfit, missing, or otherwise unable to control your inheritance.””

Dad shook his head.

“She thought someone would try to take him away?””

Robert nodded.

“She believed the money wasn't the only thing they wanted. They wanted Ethan removed from the equation entirely.””

My phone vibrated.

A message appeared from an unfamiliar number.

*You need to know what Vanessa was really planning.*

I showed Robert.

He frowned.

“Don't respond.””

Another message appeared.

This time, it contained a photograph of a document.

A hospital admission form.

My name was printed at the top.

Ethan Williams.

The date was tomorrow.

Under REASON FOR ADMISSION, someone had typed:

*PSYCHIATRIC EVALUATION — FAMILY-REQUESTED INVOLUNTARY HOLD.*

I felt my blood turn cold.

“Dad?””

He took the phone.

His face went pale.

Robert immediately examined the photograph.

“Where did this come from?””

“I don't know.””

Dad looked at Daniel's video call.

“Can they do this?””

Daniel answered carefully.

“An involuntary psychiatric hold requires specific legal and medical criteria. A family member cannot simply order someone detained because of a financial dispute.””

“But someone submitted this.””

Robert nodded.

“And the requesting party is listed here.””

He zoomed in on the bottom of the form.

The name was not Vanessa Williams.

It wasn't David Williams either.

It was a name none of us expected to see.

*MARCUS WILLIAMS.*

My father stared at the screen.

“I never submitted this.””

Robert turned the document around.

Then he noticed the second signature.

A physician's authorization.

And beneath it was the name of the doctor who had treated my mother on the night she died.

Dad whispered:

“Dr. Samuel Reed.””

Robert slowly closed the folder.

“Marcus, I think we've finally found the person who helped Vanessa alter Danielle's medical records.””

He looked at me.

“And he has just signed a document declaring you a danger to yourself.””

My father stood so quickly his chair fell backward.

“Get me that doctor's address.””

But Robert's phone rang before anyone could move.

He answered.

Listened.

Then his face went completely white.

“Marcus,” he whispered.

“Dr. Reed has disappeared.””

A second later, Daniel's laptop chimed.

An official notice had arrived.

May you like

The hospital had confirmed Ethan Williams's admission for the following morning.

And the person listed as his emergency contact was Vanessa.
