Chapter 14: The Truth My Mother Never Lived to Tell

Daniel Brooks agreed to meet us at Susan's office that afternoon.

He arrived with a lawyer, carrying a thick folder secured by an elastic band. He looked older than I remembered from the photograph Dad had shown me, with gray at his temples and deep lines around his mouth.

He didn't look like a mastermind.

He looked like a man who had spent too long running from something.

“Michael,” he said, sitting across from Dad.

“I understand why you hate me.””

“I don't hate you,” Dad replied.

“I want to know why you helped my wife try to send my daughter away.””

Daniel glanced at me.

“I didn't know the school transfer was being used that way.””

“You signed documents connected to it.””

“I was asked to provide administrative support. I didn't understand that the signature was forged.””

Susan opened her notebook.

“Mr. Brooks, we need specific answers. Did you introduce Vanessa to Laura Carter before Vanessa married Michael?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Vanessa told me she was researching family trusts for a foundation project. She wanted advice from someone who had established an educational trust for a child.””

Dad's jaw tightened.

“Was that true?””

Daniel looked down.

“Not entirely.””

“Then tell us the truth.””

Daniel placed the folder on the table.

“Vanessa and I knew each other before she met you. We had a personal relationship that ended, although we remained in contact. She told me she was struggling financially and wanted a stable future. I introduced her to Margaret because I believed Margaret could help her find legitimate work.””

“And then she approached Laura,” Dad said.

“Yes.””

“Did you know she was asking about Emily's inheritance?””

“Not at first. When I found out, I told her to stop.””

I leaned forward.

“Why didn't you tell my father?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Because I was ashamed. I had helped create the situation, and I didn't want my relationship with Vanessa exposed.””

“So you protected yourself instead of protecting me.””

He flinched.

“Yes.””

For once, nobody tried to soften the truth.

Susan asked about the flash drive.

Daniel opened the folder and removed a small encrypted storage device.

“Laura gave me this shortly before she died. She asked me to preserve it in case someone tried to alter the trust records.””

Dad stared at him.

“Why would she trust you?””

“She didn't. Not completely. She gave it to me because she believed I might know who was behind the requests. She told me to hand it over to the trustee if anything happened to her.””

“And you kept it for years?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Fear. Shame. And eventually, cowardice.””

Daniel pushed the device across the table.

“I learned recently that Richard was using Vanessa to obtain information about the trust. He told her he could help protect her financial future if she cooperated. He also told her that if Emily was sent away, nobody would question why she was absent while certain documents were processed.””

Dad's face hardened.

“Did you help him?””

“I gave him some administrative information about the trust's educational distribution process. I did not authorize any changes, and I never had legal authority to do so.””

“But you knew he was trying to gain access.””

Daniel looked down.

“I suspected it.””

Susan carefully placed the device in an evidence bag.

“We'll have it examined. Until then, we won't assume it proves any particular allegation.””

Dad leaned forward.

“Where is Vanessa?””

“I don't know. She called me yesterday and said she was leaving town. She was frightened.””

“Frightened of whom?””

“Richard.””

Daniel explained that Richard had promised Vanessa money if she helped him obtain information about the trust. When she realized the documents involved forged signatures and unauthorized transfers, she tried to withdraw.

Richard threatened to expose her affair and report her for the financial misconduct.

“She told me she wanted to leave with Noah,” Daniel said.

“She thought getting away from everyone was the only way to protect him.””

Dad's expression softened slightly at Noah's name.

“Did she say where she was going?””

“No. She said she needed time to think.””

Susan asked Daniel to provide every message and document related to Richard, Vanessa, and the trust. His lawyer agreed to cooperate with the investigation.

When the meeting ended, Dad and I returned to the house.

I felt exhausted.

For weeks, I'd believed Vanessa had simply decided she didn't want me around. Now I understood that she had been part of a much older scheme, though I still couldn't tell where manipulation ended and her own choices began.

“Do you think she ever loved Noah?”” I asked.

Dad looked at me.

“Yes. I think she loves him. That doesn't excuse what she did to you.””

“What about you?””

He was quiet for a moment.

“I loved the woman I believed she was. I don't know how much of that person was real.””

That evening, Susan called with an update.

The flash drive contained financial correspondence, scanned trust records, and a draft letter from my grandfather, Arthur Carter, dated several weeks before his death.

Dad read it standing beside the kitchen window.

His hands trembled.

“What does it say?”” I asked.

He passed it to me.

The letter was addressed to my mother.

Laura,

I have reason to believe someone is attempting to use my estate to gain leverage over Michael. I cannot prove who is responsible, but I have learned that Vanessa's connection to Daniel Brooks is older than she has admitted.

I also discovered that Richard has been asking questions about the company shares Michael will inherit.

I fear these matters may be connected.

Please keep Emily's trust separate from the company. Do not allow anyone to persuade you that protecting the family requires sacrificing the child's independence.

If anything happens to me, the original documents are in the locked cabinet in my private office. Michael must see them when the time is right.

I looked up.

“Dad, Grandpa knew about Vanessa.””

“He suspected something,” Dad said.

“But he didn't know everything.””

“Why didn't Mom tell you?””

“Maybe she was trying to protect me. Maybe she was waiting for evidence. We can't know for certain.””

The following morning, Dad, Susan, and an investigator went to the old family office. The building had been mostly unused since my grandfather's death, its rooms filled with old furniture and boxes of archived records.

The locked cabinet stood behind a desk in the back room.

A locksmith opened it under the investigator's supervision.

Inside were folders containing estate documents, correspondence, and a sealed envelope addressed to Dad.

He opened it carefully.

The first page was a statement written by my grandfather.

The second page was a list of names connected to an attempted scheme to gain influence over the Carter family assets.

Richard Hayes.

Daniel Brooks.

Vanessa Carter.

And one final name.

*Andrew Carter.*

Dad sat down heavily.

His brother hadn't merely been contacted by Richard. The records suggested he had agreed to help pressure Dad into surrendering control of the company in exchange for a promised share of future proceeds.

But the most disturbing document was a letter from Richard to Andrew.

Once Michael is distracted by the family situation, we can move forward. The girl is the obstacle. Keep her away from the company and make sure the trust remains under someone we can influence.

Dad read it twice.

Then he looked at Susan.

“This wasn't just about Emily's inheritance.””

“No,” she said.

“It appears they wanted leverage over the company as well.””

A final page was tucked into the envelope.

It was a draft statement from my grandfather, written shortly before he died.

If Michael refuses to cooperate, remind him that his daughter is the only person whose future cannot be bought.

I felt sick.

My childhood had been turned into a bargaining chip before I was old enough to understand what money meant.

Dad folded the letter and held it against his chest.

“They used you to get to me.””

I shook my head.

“They tried to.””

He looked at me.

“You're right.””

For the first time, I saw something change in his expression. The guilt was still there, but it was no longer the only thing.

He was angry.

Not at me.

At everyone who had mistaken my silence for permission.

Susan gathered the documents.

“We now have evidence that may connect the financial misconduct to a broader effort to gain control of the company. The investigators will determine which allegations can be supported and what action is appropriate.””

Dad nodded.

Then his phone rang.

The caller was an investigator assigned to locate Vanessa.

He listened without speaking.

Finally, he said, “Is Noah safe?””

A pause.

“Good. Tell me where they are.””

He ended the call and turned toward me.

“They've located Vanessa and Noah.””

“Where?””

Dad hesitated.

“At a small motel outside the city.””

“Is she coming home?””

“I don't know, sweetheart.””

He looked at the old documents on the table.

“But before we decide what happens next, there's something I need to do.””

He picked up his phone and called Andrew.

This time, when his brother answered, Dad didn't shout.

He simply said, “I have Grandpa's letter. I know what you and Richard planned.””

A long silence followed.

Then Andrew replied with a sentence that changed everything.

“Michael, you have the wrong version of the story.””

Dad closed his eyes.

Andrew continued.

“Richard didn't start it. Vanessa didn't start it. And if you want to know who first suggested using Emily's trust to control the company, you need to look at the person who drafted the original agreement.””

Dad stared at Susan.

“Who drafted it?””

May you like

Andrew's answer was barely audible.

“Your father did.””
